Rick was programmed by Deke Shaw when he reclaimed some Framework equipment and software to create a recreational virtual reality for the inhabitants of the Lighthouse. In this version of the Framework, Rick was a barman who valued cleanliness and had a tendency to talk back when Shaw reproached him with his obsession.

During one of his sessions in the Framework, Rick got to hear Shaw once again complaining about the fact that he had thrown away old newspapers. Rick was asked to find them shortly before Daisy Johnson arrived in his bar.
