- "Mom!"
"What? What is it, Billy?"
"I hear Dad in my head. He's in trouble." - ―Billy Maximoff and Wanda Maximoff[src]
The Rescue of Vision was a process that expanded the borders of the Westview Anomaly when Vision attempted to exit from it, nearly dying in the process.
Background[]
- "What is outside of Westview?"
"You don't wanna know, I promise you."
"You don't get to make that choice for me, Wanda!" - ―Vision and Wanda Maximoff[src]
During his quest to collect the Infinity Stones, Thanos needed to retrieve the Mind Stone from Vision's head. In order to prevent this, the Avengers brought Vision to Wakanda, where Shuri could attempt to remove the Mind Stone from Vision's head, allowing Wanda Maximoff to destroy it. Thanos' forces arrived in Wakanda, leading to a battle during which Vision ended the operation on him before the Mind Stone could be completely removed. Thanos then arrived in Wakanda while Maximoff was forced to kill Vision to destroy the Mind Stone, upset because of the romantic relationship that had developed between them. However, Thanos then used the Time Stone to reverse time and resurrect Vision, removing the Mind Stone and tossing aside his lifeless body. Thanos then used all five Infinity Stones to kill half of all life in the universe, including Maximoff.[4] Vision's body was then taken into S.W.O.R.D. custody.[5]
Five years later, Maximoff and the rest of the people who had been killed were resurrected by the Avengers, and Maximoff and the others then helped defeat Thanos.[6] Upset by Vision's death, Maximoff went to S.W.O.R.D. Headquarters, and was allowed to see Vision's body by Tyler Hayward. Maximoff attempted to reactivate Vision, although she realized that he was truly dead, unaware that they were attempting to reactivate Vision. Upset by this, she drove to Westview, New Jersey, where she and Vision were planning on moving in together.
Upon arriving in Westview, Maximoff arrived at the plot of land which was supposed to become their home and began crying. Her Chaos Magic then released a powerful burst, altering the reality of Westview's world and making them act as though they were in a sitcom, where Maximoff a recreation of Vision could live happily together,[5] tying Vision's existence to the existence of the spell cast on the town.[7] One of the residents of Westview was in witness protection with the FBI, who realized he had gone missing, so Jimmy Woo was sent to investigate. He asked for S.W.O.R.D.'s help, and the agency sent Monica Rambeau to help investigate, although she got pulled into Westview and was brainwashed like the rest of the town.[2]
While in Westview, Rambeau took on the alias "Geraldine" and was made to play along,[8] while S.W.O.R.D. set up a temporary facility outside the borders of the town in order to investigate the anomaly.[2] Rambeau came to remember her past when Maximoff mentioned her twin brother, so Maximoff kicked her out of Westview.[9]
Wanting to figure out how Maximoff created a new Vision,[10] Hayward attempted many times to contact Maximoff and make her stop influencing Westview, although this only angered Maximoff and made her leave the town to threaten Hayward and the rest of S.W.O.R.D.. Meanwhile, Vision had discovered that his coworker at Computational Services Inc., Norm Gentilucci, was brainwashed and unable to control his own actions. He returned home to Maximoff and demanded to know what was happening, leading to an argument between the two,[11] at the end of which Agatha Harkness[10] sent Ralph Bohner[7] to Maximoff's house, where he pretended to be Maximoff's brother, Pietro Maximoff,[11] who had in fact died at the hands of Ultron, years prior.[12]
Vision spent the next day, Halloween, attempting figure out what was truly happening in Westview. While Maximoff was distracted with "Pietro" and her twin sons, Tommy and Billy Maximoff, Vision explored the edges of Westview, where he discovered that people farther away from Maximoff were less mobile, eventually reaching the edge of town, where people were not moving at all. Vision reached the edge of Westview's hexagonal border,[13] dubbed the Hex by Darcy Lewis,[11] intending to leave town and figure out why no one else could.[13]
Rescue[]
- "Why aren't you helping him? Stop! He's coming apart!"
- ―Darcy Lewis to S.W.O.R.D.[src]
As Vision attempted to leave Westview, he struggled to push through the border, eventually collapsing once he could see the S.W.O.R.D. team that had formed near his location. Wanda Maximoff's spell began pulling Vision back into town, although he struggled against the pull in order to ask S.W.O.R.D. to save the civilians of Westview while he was dying. Vision and Darcy Lewis locked eyes, sharing an understanding that Westview needed to be saved.
Billy Maximoff, who had been playing with his brother, Tommy, sensed that Vision was in danger using his newfound psychic abilities, and had Tommy rush him over to his mother using Tommy's newfound enhanced speed. Billy told Wanda what was happening to Vision, and she sensed that he was trying to reach S.W.O.R.D., believing they would try to take him. "Pietro Maximoff" mentioned that Vision was already dead, saying it was unlikely he could die a second time, prompting Wanda to retaliate by throwing him to the side. Maximoff stopped time within Westview and expanded the borders to the Hex, allowing Vision to again be safely inside.
The Hex continued expanding, as the agents of S.W.O.R.D. attempted to run away.[13] While Monica Rambeau, Jimmy Woo, and Tyler Hayward had managed to escape in time, other people were brought into Westview and brainwashed, including Darcy Lewis and Monti,[10] turning them into circus performers.[13]
Aftermath[]
- "What am I now?"
"Honestly, I'm a STEM type of lady, so I thought she just flipped a switch on your head and brought you back to life, but what I don't get is why you can't leave the Hex." - ―Vision and Darcy Lewis[src]
Wanda Maximoff had Tommy Maximoff and Billy Maximoff stop talking to "Pietro Maximoff," having figure out that he was not her brother. She decided to punish herself by isolating herself, having Agatha Harkness, who she only knew as Agnes, watch her sons. Meanwhile, Vision freed Darcy Lewis from Wanda's mind control as the two struggled to get back to Maximoff and talk about what she had done, before Vision realized he was wasting his time and flew to where she was.
Meanwhile, S.W.O.R.D. had created a new base after their old one was consumed by the Hex, while Monica Rambeau re-entered Westview without getting brainwashed. She rushed in and tried to get Maximoff to stop, when "Agnes" came to defend her, revealing to Maximoff that she was responsible for the problems in Maximoff's reality[10] and that she had kidnapped's Maximoff's sons. Threatening Billy and Tommy, Harkness made Maximoff reveal how she cast the spell on Westview, causing Harkness to realize that Maximoff was the Scarlet Witch while S.W.O.R.D. the original Vision as White Vision.[5] Harkness attempted to absorb Maximoff's powers, although Maximoff defeated her and freed Westview while her husband stopped White Vision, brainwashing her to believe she was "Agnes," the personality she had chosen for herself in Westview.[7]
