"She'd be right. I uncovered plans to assassinate Tony Stark while on a deep cover operation inside the Ten Rings." - ―Tony Stark and Erik Stevens[src]
In an attempt to get rid of Tony Stark and take control over Stark Industries, Obadiah Stane hired the Ten Rings to assassinate him. However, Erik Stevens who was on a deep cover operation inside the Ten Rings, uncovered Stane's plans. Stevens obtained all evidence related to Stane's involvement and separated from his squad to rescue Stark.[1]

- ―Erik Killmonger to Tony Stark[src]
Soon after the Jericho presentation in Afghanistan, the United States Air Force convoy with Tony Stark was ambushed by the Ten Rings. While multiple soldiers were killed under the enemy fire, Stark attempted to leave the vehicle and escape. Suddenly, a Stark Industries missile landed near him but Erik Killmonger managed to intercept the missile before it could hit Stark. Killmonger successfully gunned down all Ten Rings operatives and evacuated Stark out of the area before the reinforcements could arrive.[1]
Aftermath[]

Erik Killmonger is hired by Stark Industries
- "I saw young Americans killed by the very weapons I created to protect them. And I realized we have to do better, build bigger, and fight badder for them."
- ―Tony Stark[src]
During the press conference at United States of America, Erik Stevens presented an evidence he collected during his operation and exposed Obadiah Stane's involvement in the attack. With Stane arrested for cooperating with the Ten Rings, Tony Stark appointed Stevens as the new COO of Stark Industries, and they began working together on the Project Liberator. As a result, they created a prototype of the automated combat drone that would replace human troops in the ground warfare.

Erik Killmonger kills James Rhodes
However, it was all a part of Stevens' plan, as he killed James Rhodes and T'Challa which strained the relationship between America and Wakanda. After Stark uncovered his involvement, Stevens killed Stark, making it look like Wakandans were seeking revenge for the death of their prince. The US military considered it a declaration of war, deploying an army of the Liberator Drones to Wakanda, only for them to be destroyed by Wakandan army with Killmonger's assistance.[1]
