- "Being here tonight feels totally ridiculous, like we're living fake lives or something."
"Yeah, well, we are. But shit's about to get really real." - ―Nico Minoru and Alex Wilder
Refraction is the seventh episode of the first season of the television series Runaways.
Synopsis[]
At Atlas’ Open House, our parents and kids are thrown together following the revelations of the gala. But for one family, the school event is only the beginning of the drama.
Plot[]
While asleep, Victor Stein dreams of episodes of his past life: the first time he met his future wife Janet at Culver University, his amazement at the birth of their son Chase and a time when Victor slapped Chase when the latter insulted him for having failed to attend his lacrosse game. Victor is then awakened by his time machine. Although Victor previously deemed it not functional, the machine displays pictures of an adult Chase warning his father not to pick up the Fistigons.
Both the Runaways and PRIDE prepare for the upcoming Atlas Academy open house. Following the reveal that Molly Hernandez knows about the Rite of Blood, Catherine Wilder searches her son Alex's bedroom for clue, but to no avail. Janet is surprised to see that Chase and Victor are bonding and that Victor will attend the open house. At the Minoru Mansion, Robert Minoru tells his daughter Nico that he's leaving his wife Tina for Janet. Meanwhile, Frank Dean saves Calvin with his recently acquired Healing Gloves, which upsets Leslie Dean.
The Runaways meet at the Atlas Academy, but there are tensions within the group especially since Gert Yorkes saw Chase and Karolina kissing during the PRIDE gala at Wizard Headquarters. While they discuss how they could cause PRIDE to be arrested, Hernandez informs her friends that she accidentally revealed to Catherine that they know about the sacrifices. This causes an argument and Hernandez abruptly leaves the group. However, Karolina later comes to see her and comforts her.
Dale and Stacey Yorkes analyze the serum previously kept by the former when they healed Victor from his brain tumor. However, Dale accidentally drops some of it on his arm, which causes euphoria and hyperactivity. While Stacey tries to manage this turn of events, the Wilders arrive to discuss about Hernandez, but Stacey tells them that they will talk at the open house.
Meanwhile, Leslie confronts Jonah about his actions and how it threatens Leslie's leadership over the Church of Gibborim, but Jonah rebuffs her, claiming that only PRIDE matters and that the Church nears its end. At the Church of Gibborim Executive Office, Frank and Vaughn Kaye find David Ellerh's old desk. When searching the drawers, Frank finds a picture of Jonah with a child Leslie, much to his bewilderment.
PRIDE and the Runaways are all present at the Atlas Academy open house, although tensions within both groups are still present. Leslie finds Janet and tells her that it is paramount that she repairs her marriage with Victor, to which Janet replies that she will end her affair with Robert, which she carries out to Robert's disappointment. Despite pretending to still be the friendly man he had become, Victor suffers from withdrawal symptoms as the effects of Jonah's Serum vanish and he assaults Chase's lacrosse coach Alphona.
The Wilders tell Dale and Stacey about Hernandez and how they have to send her away to protect her from Jonah. Although the Yorkeses are reluctant to the idea, they eventually agree to send Hernandez to live with her cousin Graciela Aguirre in Montebello. The conversation is witnessed from afar by the Runaways, who gather and discuss their uncomfortable situation, still waiting for the file retrieved during the Infiltration into Wizard Headquarters to be decrypted and uncertain about their future once they make it public.
As the day nears its end, Frank shows Leslie the picture he found. Leslie eventually confesses about her true relationship to Jonah and how Jonah is the Being mentioned in the Book of Gibborim. At the Yorkes Residence, Hernandez learns about her adoptive parents' decision to send her away and is extremely upset by it. Although she nearly reveals her superhuman strength, Gert tells her that she has to go according to this plan. At the Stein Mansion, Victor berates Chase for being alone in this lab. As Chase blames his father for having returned to his violent behavior, Victor picks up the Fistigons and attacks Chase. However, he is stopped by Janet, who shoots him.
