Alexei Shostakov, known as the Red Guardian, is a former acclaimed pilot in the Soviet Union, who shares a complicated and idiosyncratic history with Natasha Romanoff.[2]
Biography
Early career
Alexei Shostakov gew up in the Soviet Union during the Nuclear arms race. Jealous due slowing to catch up the success of the United States of America in developing weapons and Captain America's debut during World War II, the Russian government decided to create their own Captain America version, and so Alexei was selected and injected a super-strength serum and trained in a certain way just like how Captain America had been administered the Super Soldier Serum, becoming known as the Red Guardian. However, the Red Guardian didn't become as famous like his American counterpart and unlike the Captain, nobody really knew about his secret identity.[3]

- In the comics, Alexi Shostakov was a Soviet Union pilot who was rescued by Vasily Karpov during World War II and trained by the KGB to become the second Red Guardian. Shostakov was also the former husband of Natasha Romanoff. In Black Widow, he is instead the former husband of Melina Vostokoff.
Behind the Scenes
- David Harbour reflected that Alexei Shostakov is "the counterpart to Captain America on the Russian Soviet side, but that way we have a lot of play with who he is and we are playing with him," which is one of the things he really likes of the character.[7]
- John Macdonald, Rob Mars and Scott Hunter were stunt doubles for David Harbour in the role of Red Guardian.
