Alexei Andreovitch Shostakov (Russian: Алексей Андреевич Шостаков) is a super soldier known as Red Guardian (Russian: Красный страж). In 1991, he was assigned on a mission to the United States with fellow Soviet super soldier Winter Soldier.

Soviet Super Soldier (What If) — Shostakov rejects his mission from Dreykov

Alexei Shostakov became a super soldier for the Soviet Union known as the Red Guardian where he would work for General Dreykov. In December 1991, Red Guardian was assigned an undercover mission from Dreykov as a Senior Data Input Manager in Ohio. Red Guardian was outraged by this and brought up the intel provided by Rook, but Dreykov decided to deploy Winter Soldier instead for that mission. This further angered Red Guardian, who decided to prove his value to Dreykov by intercepting Winter Soldier's mission.^[1]

Learning the mission details from Rook's intel, Red Guardian traveled to the United States, posing as an American named Bob Toledo. Red Guardian chased after Winter Soldier and stopped him from killing Howard and Maria Stark. Winter Soldier insisted on leaving no witnesses, but Red Guardian tried to convince him that not killing would benefit them. Winter Soldier tried to kill Red Guardian, so the two fought each other until they heard sirens, forcing both of them to flee.^[1]

Red Guardian hid with Winter Soldier, who reported the status of his mission and was informed that there would be no extraction. Changing into civilian clothes, Red Guardian and Winter Soldier went to get food, where the former suggested they locate Rook, believing he could help them. Needing to get to Las Vegas, the two stole a car and made their way there.

What If... Season 3 Sneak Preview (7) — Red Guardian is questioned by Bill Foster

They were stopped by S.H.I.E.L.D., who were hunting the two super soldiers. They were questioned by Bill Foster, who quickly figured out who they were. Winter Soldier went to shoot Foster, so Red Guardian drove off, commencing a car chase. As Red Guardian continued to explain why they should not kill, Winter Soldier opened fire at the S.H.I.E.L.D. cars ahead of them, forcing Red Guardian to swerve away to avoid casualties.

Alexei Shostakov vs. Goliath — Red Guardian fights against Goliath

Foster, who had transformed into Goliath, began chasing them on foot, so Red Guardian had Winter Soldier drive, allowing him to use his shield to attack Goliath. Red Guardian then jumped on Goliath and forced him to fall over. Back in the car, they were coming towards a cliff, so Winter Soldier and Red Guardian decided to drive off it, knowing that they would survive. With their vehicle destroyed from the crash, Red Guardian and Winter Soldier continued on foot, successfully escaping S.H.I.E.L.D.^[1]

As the two patched themselves up, Red Guardian asked about Winter Soldier's past, which he claimed to not have. Red Guardian helped Winter Soldier unlock his early memories in which he recalled Coney Island. The two then drove to Las Vegas, where they continued to bond with each other.

The Red Guardian (What If) — Red Guardian is disappointed by Rook

They arrived at a hotel where the two met Rook, who Red Guardian expression his admiration towards. However, they soon discovered that Rook was not a Russian spy, but an American capitalist who traded secrets so that the Starks would be killed. Red Guardian was deflated over the idea that he had worked with a capitalist, but Rook responded by stating that none of the people they work for cared about them. Rook then shot at Red Guardian, but Winter Soldier blocked the bullets and knocked Rook out the window, killing him.

OOC Winter Soldier cringe uwu behavior — Red Guardian and Winter Soldier team up

Red Guardian and Winter Soldier reflected over the terrible people that they worked for, and Winter Soldier acknowledged Red Guardian as a good person. They were then surrounded by the Red Room Task Force, so they made their escape by jumping out of the building. As they ran away, they were once again chased by Goliath, who managed to pick Red Guardian up. Winter Soldier saved Red Guardian, and by working together, they were able to defeat him.

Red Guardian and Winter Soldier (What If) — Red Guardian fights with Winter Soldier

The two ran into a building where they were followed by the Task Force, forcing them to take cover. Winter Soldier revealed that if he was captured, his memory of all that had happened between them would be wiped. Red Guardian then learned that Winter Soldier disobeyed orders to kill him. And when Winter Soldier told Red Guardian to escape with the serum, Red Guardian destroyed it, determined to stay and fight with Winter Soldier. The two jumped from their cover and fought against the Task Force, however, only Red Guardian escaped, as Winter Soldier was captured.^[1]

Red Guardian defects to the United States (What If) — Red Guardian is recruited by Bill Foster

Shostakov started a new life in the United States, becoming a gym teacher under the Bob Toledo identity. One day, Bill Foster visited Shostakov at his new job, returning Red Guardian's Shield to him which had been recovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. Citing the cooperation between their two countries in World War II, Foster offered Shostakov a job which he accepted.^[1]

Red Guardian joins the Avengers — Red Guardian alongside the Avengers

In 2012, Red Guardian joined the Avengers during the Battle of New York. As all of the Avengers stood together in a circle formation, Red Guardian pushed his way in between Captain America and Black Widow.^[1]
