- "Your father took me in and gave me a home and a purpose."
"And a razor arm."
"It's a Razor Fist." - ―Razor Fist and Xu Xialing[src]
Mattias is the adoptive son of Xu Wenwu who was later trained to become an assassin for the Ten Rings and was given a retractable blade on his right arm, gaining him the name Razor Fist. Mattias was sent by Wenwu to retrieve his son, Xu Shang-Chi, and later tracked him to the Golden Daggers Club. Mattias participated in the Battle of Ta Lo on the side of the Ten Rings, but later agreed to side with the Ta Lo warriors help defeat the forces of the Dweller-in-Darkness. After the battle and Wenwu's death, Mattias continued to serve the Ten Rings under Xu Xialing's rule.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Discovered by Wenwu[]
Mattias lived on the streets of Romania, having lost his right hand. One day, while he was working as a juggler, he met Xu Wenwu, who said that Mattias reminded him of his son, Shang-Chi. Wenwu adopted him, leading to him soon becoming a member of the Ten Rings. When Wenwu offered him a new life and purpose, as well as a new home, Mattias started to look up to him as a father figure. Eventually Wenwu implanted a retractable razor blade into Mattias' arm to substitute his missing hand, after which Mattias gave himself the moniker "Razor Fist".[2]
Ten Rings[]
Attack on Shang-Chi[]
In 2024, Razor Fist was sent to San Francisco, California on an assignment from Xu Wenwu to retrieve Shang-Chi's pendant which could help Wenwu discover how to find and enter Ta Lo. After tracking Shang-Chi on a bus, Razor Fist and other Ten Rings agents infiltrated the bus and ambushed him. During the battle, Razor Fist used his blade to slice the bus in half. Despite Shang-Chi's superior skills, Razor Fist managed to grab the pendant off him and succeed in his mission.[2]
Attack on the Golden Daggers Club[]
Razor Fist, along with Xu Wenwu and the Ten Rings, then travelled via helicopter to Macau, China to the Golden Daggers Club in order to retrieve Xu Xialing's pendant. When they arrived, Razor Fist led the agents inside the Club where they spotted Shang-Chi and Katy Chen. He sent the agents after them while he went and retrieved the pendant from Xialing. Afterwards, he handed the pendant to Wenwu and watched as Wenwu was reunited with Shang-Chi.[2]
Returning to Headquarters[]
Razor Fist then rode in the helicopter with Xu Wenwu, Shang-Chi, Katy Chen, and Xu Xialing to the Ten Rings Headquarters. When Shang-Chi and Xialing refused to let Wenwu search for his wife, he knocked them to the ground. Chen tried to protest but Razor Fist subdued her and brought her to the prison.[2]
Battle of Ta Lo[]
Razor Fist later accompanied Wenwu's expedition to Ta Lo, leading to a stand-off between the Ten Rings and the villagers. As fighting broke out between the two sides, Razor Fist proceeded to attack Shang-Chi, only for Xialing to engage him instead so her brother could pursue Wenwu.
In the midst of the battle, as Xialing managed to get Razor Fist in an armlock, Ying Nan announced that Wenwu had reached the Dark Gate. Xialing insisted they work together against the Soul Eaters, but Razor Fist assumed it to be a trick and refused to believe Nan's claims that the weapons of the Ten Rings were useless against them. He was soon proven wrong as Death Dealer was swiftly killed and a Soul Eater that attacked Razor Fist proved impervious to his attacks until Nan destroyed it with her dragon scale staff. Acknowledging that the Ten Rings were outmatched, Razor Fist agreed to work with the villagers and ordered his men to follow suit. He then replaced his blade with a dragon scale blade to fight off the Soul Eaters.
In the aftermath, Razor Fist partook in the lantern ceremony to honor the fallen.[2]
New Leadership[]
Following the Battle of Ta Lo, Razor Fist returned with the remaining forces of the Ten Rings to their base. With Xu Wenwu gone, his daughter, Xu Xialing, took over Leadership of the Ten Rings, bringing in her own staff from the Golden Daggers Club, and beginning to reshuffle the entire organization. Razor Fist accompanied Xialing to her new throne, before she told him and Jon Jon they had a lot of work to do. Razor Fist stood loyally by her side as they oversaw the training of the next generation of Ten Rings warriors.[2]
Personality[]
Having been adopted by Xu Wenwu, Mattias is fiercely loyal to the Ten Rings. He is a proud warrior who is very confident of his skills, and often brags about the Ten Rings' strength. In contrast to Wenwu's biological children, who fear and resent him, Mattias genuinely looks up to him as a father figure and appreciates being given a purpose in life. Mattias is fond of his mechanized razor arm, nicknaming himself after it, and even painting his car with the "Razor Fist" name over it. Mattias held a grudge against Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing over them being Wenwu's true children, and he did not hesitate to attack and attempt to kill Shang-Chi when they ambushed him in the bus and was quick to pick fights with him and Xialing multiple times.
However, during the Battle of Ta Lo, Mattias was able to put his differences aside with Shang-Chi and Xialing and help them fight against the Dweller-in-Darkness and the Soul Eaters after understanding the danger they pose to the world. After Wenwu's death and Xialing taking over the Ten Rings, Mattias accepted his adoptive sister as his new leader, as well as the changes she intended to implement to the organization. Also, Mattias seems to have part ways with Shang-Chi on good terms as he has come to see him as his family.
