- "S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most secure facility is vulnerable right now."
"The Fridge?"
"Oh, you've heard of it? Yeah, well, we're gonna raid it." - ―Grant Ward, Raina and John Garrett[src]
The Raid of the Fridge was an attack on the Fridge led by John Garrett and Grant Ward and a part of the HYDRA Uprising. After Garrett was imprisoned by S.H.I.E.L.D., Ward volunteered to bring him to the Fridge. Instead of bringing him to the Fridge as a prisoner, he killed Agent Victoria Hand and two others. He then used Garrett to gain entrance into the Fridge.
Background[]
- "Once we hit the Fridge and grab all the fun toys tucked away inside we'll be able to take any base we want."
- ―John Garrett[src]
For decades, HYDRA had been growing as a part of S.H.I.E.L.D., secretly planting its agents within the law-enforcement agency.[3] An encrypted message had been sent to all S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities telling HYDRA agents to take over. John Garrett was discovered as a HYDRA agent, but was captured by Coulson's Team and Victoria Hand.[4] Agent Kaminsky, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicopter pilot, reported to Garrett at the Barbershop Headquarters that his unit of HYDRA agents failed to capture the Cube. Garrett promised Kaminsky and the other agents that after they captured the Fridge, any other base they wanted would fall.[1]
Raid[]
- "You really think Fury would give away all these goodies? We're talking about the same guy that messed around with Tesseract technology and sparked an alien invasion."
- ―John Garrett to Grant Ward[src]
Unbeknownst to Grant Ward and John Garrett, Victoria Hand had called in advance with a standing order that no one could enter without her; therefore, when the two guards were approached by Ward and Garrett, they were immediately denied entry, despite Garrett being handcuffed. Kaminsky fired upon the two from his S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicopter, causing the guards to open the door, not wanting to cause the death of a fellow agent because of their own doubts. Inside the elevator, without warning, Garrett confessed that they were HYDRA agents and Ward killed both guards. Ward and Garrett then used gas to incapacitate all other guards as HYDRA swarmed the place.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "HYDRA just released the entire population of the Fridge into the wild."
- ―Phil Coulson[src]
John Garrett freed many of the prisoners, including Blackout and Ian Quinn, and procured many weapons, including the Berserker Staff and the Peruvian 0-8-4. Grant Ward used the Peruvian weapon to access a hidden sub-level to get the cluster of Gravitonium inside.[1] Eric Koenig died because he was close to discovering Ward's role in the raid. The freed Marcus Daniels traveled to Portland to stalk Audrey Nathan again.[5]
At least one HYDRA agent was believed to have been killed in the battle, Yuri Zaikin. He would resurface sometime later working with another terrorist organization, this time the Watchdogs.[6]
Man-Thing, a creature confined to the Fridge for observation by S.H.I.E.L.D., was liberated by HYDRA's raid.[7] He somehow managed to flee Earth and ended up on Sakaar, where he was imprisoned by the Grandmaster and forced to fight in the Contest of Champions, eventually gaining the title of Champion.[8]
