"There's an old children's joke. You hold up a white piece of paper and you ask, 'What's this?' 'A rabbit in a snowstorm'. [...] People always ask me how can we charge so much for what amounts to gradations of white. I tell them it's not about the artist's name or the skill required not even about the art itself. All that matters is 'How does it make you feel?'"
Vanessa Marianna to Wilson Fisk[src]

Rabbit in a Snowstorm is a painting owned by Wilson Fisk.

History

Confiscated by Gestapo

"I was a toddler when the wolves came to our door. The Gestapo demanded everything we had. Including that painting."
Esther Falb to Wilson Fisk[src]

In 1940s, Rabbit in a Snowstorm was owned by Esther Falb's family. In 1943, members of the Gestapo confiscated a painting after they killed Falb's father and chased her family across Poland.[1]

Purchased by Wilson Fisk

"How are you enjoying 'Rabbit in a Snowstorm'?"
"You remember."
"Of course It's one of my favorite pieces."
"I hung it in my bedroom. It's the last thing I see every night."
"That's either very romantic or very sad."
Vanessa Marianna and Wilson Fisk[src]

Many years later, the painting was possessed by Scene Contempo Gallery. Art dealer Vanessa Marianna specifically referring to the painting as one of her favorite pieces. During one exhibition, she spotted Wilson Fisk who was looked up at it. Marianna told him an old children's joke about a white piece of paper which featured a rabbit in a snowstorm. She also explained that the value of the painting is about what it makes the viewer feel. Fisk who was interested in the painting and Marianna, said that it makes him feel alone.[2]

Fisk purchased the painting for a large amount of money and hung it in the bedroom of his penthouse. Gradations of white became the last thing that he saw every night.[3]

Returned to Owner

"This painting is bound up in that love. It's part of me. It's part of us."
Wilson Fisk to Esther Falb[src]

In the wake of Arrest of Wilson Fisk, the painting was confiscated by the federal government. Falb was informed about it and took painting back, stating herself as the only legitimate owner. Upon his release, Fisk learned about it and offered Falb to sell a painting for a lot of money but she refused every single one of Fisk’s offers.

Fisk then decided to speak with Falb personally about that painting. He visited her in her house where he saw a painting. Fisk described it as beautiful peaceful what Falb agreed. Falb then reminded him that she will not sell a painting and Fisk explained her his feelings about it, which was given to him by Marianna who he loved. Falb admitted his story but then told Fisk hers, comparing Fisk with Gestapo who took that painting before. Fisk then realized that Marianna would want Falb to keep the painting and left her.[1]

However, Falb was visited by Benjamin Poindexter who wanted Falb to return the painting to Fisk, yet she refused again. Poindexter then killed her and ordered hotel staff to hang the painting in Fisk's living room at the Presidential Hotel. Poindexter presented the painting to Marianna as a gift from Fisk. However, she noticed traces of blood on the painting's frame and realized what the painting costs for them.[4]
