Early Life

As a Marine

Frank Castle was born in New York and joined the Marine Corps at age 18, where he was placed under the command of Colonel Ray Schoonover. Castle eventually earned the title of Scout Sniper and joined Marine Corps Force Recon, undertaking classified missions behind enemy lines.

Back with his Family

The day he returned from Iraq, Castle reunited with his children at school. However, he was weary from the war, and found himself neglecting family traditions and the requests from his children, such as reading to his daughter and tucking her in.

Central Park shooting

Castle takes his family to Central Park the day after he returns from Iraq, where they end up in the middle of a 3-way mob fight and everyone in his family is killed. Castle survives after getting shot in the head, but at the hospital, a Do Not Resuscitate order was placed for him. Although he flatlines, he comes back to life a few seconds later without any medical aid.

Becoming the Punisher

Getting revenge on gangs

Castle targeted the three gangs that were involved in the firefight that killed his family - the Kitchen Irish, the Dogs of Hell, and the Mexican Cartel.

Targeting Grotto

Grotto survives the Castle's initial attack on his gang, but is attacked again while in the hospital recuperating. He is then used as bait by Reyes and the District Attorney's office. Although he initially escapes, Castle finds him again and brings him to where he has chained up Daredevil. As he and Daredevil argue about the morals behind being a vigilante and killing, Castle cites Grotto as an example of why some people deserve to die, and forces Grotto to admit that he killed a man for his mob, as well as an old lady who wasn't supposed to be there but ended up seeing him. Castle then forces Daredevil to either shoot and kill Castle, or let him kill Grotto. Daredevil refuses to shoot him, so Castle kills Grotto, but he uses the gun to free himself and fights Castle.

Kidnapped by Finn Cooley

Castle was kidnapped by Finn Cooley and his mob, the Kitchen Irish, after he killed several of there members, including Cooley's son and apparently took his money. Castle is ambushed at Central Park in front of the carousel and tortured until he admits where the money is, but when Cooley sends people to check the money, there is a bomb inside. Castle then frees himself with a hidden razor blade and is eventually rescued by Daredevil, who helps him break out but refuses to let him kill anyone. After, Daredevil carries an injured Castle to a graveyard, where he explains why he became a vigilante and is apprehended by the authorities.

Trial and imprisonment

Hiring Nelson and Murdock

Castle is originally assigned an attorney, but after he meets with Karen to review her statement and she realizes that he's in agreement with the District Attorney and is willing to let Reyes give Castle the death penalty, Nelson and Murdock decide to take his case. At the hospital, they talk to Brett, who has gotten a promotion after Daredevil told him to take the credit for catching Castle. He agrees to let them see Castle, but they are interrupted by Reyes, who challenges them and tries to force them to leave. However, Nelson and Murdock quickly pokes holes in her threats, and Castle accepts them as his lawyers.

Personality

"You hit them and they get back up I hit them and they stay down!"
―Punisher[src]

Frank Castle is a man who sees the world in pure black and white terms and believes that the only way to keep the streets safe is to kill criminals so they don't harm innocents again. When his wife, son, and daughter were killed Frank turned into a violent almost sociopathic individual determined to kill every single criminal who had a hand in his families death. When dealing with criminals he is brutal, cold, and efficient. Despite this though Castle greatly values the lives of innocents and will do his absolute best to make sure that civilians are not harmed as shown when he went to the hospital looking for Grotto and made sure not to harm any patients. Castle Holds to a code of Honor "One Shot, One Kill" getting the Job done as quickly as possible whilst trying to avoid any collateral damage. He also avoided killing Daredevil and when presented with the chance to kill him simply resorted to knocking him out .Despite his cold and ruthless demeanor beneath it all Castle is a man who strongly and deeply misses his family and wishes only to make up for what he sees as his inability to protect them.
