- "In 1955, there was a classified project at Area 51 called Helius."
- ―Phil Coulson[src]
Project Helius was a S.H.I.E.L.D. research project at Area 51, using an ion fusion reactor.
History[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. Project[]
- "Helius. Yeah, that was an early attempt at an Ion Fusion Reactor. But it... it was never fully realized, and the tech was mothballed."
- ―Jemma Simmons[src]
Project Helius was started by S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 1950s as an attempt to create an ion fusion reactor, based at Area 51. However, Helius was placed in storage, as S.H.I.E.L.D. believed nothing on Earth was powerful enough to start the fusion reactor.[1]
Alternate Universes[]
Chronicom Initiation[]
- "You think Helius could be powered up the same way?"
"A Chronicom that's willing to die plus an ion fusion reactor will equal a bomb with a blast radius for miles. If that thing goes off, it could take out..."
"The entire brain trust of S.H.I.E.L.D." - ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Deke Shaw[src]
In 2019, S.H.I.E.L.D. from the prime timeline followed the Chronicoms and time traveled to an alternate 1955. Gerald Sharpe was scheduled to arrive at Area 51 in order to inspect Project Helius, but he was kidnapped by S.H.I.E.L.D., and Phil Coulson went instead, pretending to be him. He was accompanied by Jemma Simmons, pretending to be Peggy Carter. Believing one of the scientists to be replaced by a Chronicom Hunter set on activating the Helius weapon, Coulson and Simmons approached Pascal Vega and other scientists, trying to detect who was an impostor.
Simmons was eventually found by Daniel Sousa, who ordered her arrest, as well as Coulson's. Daisy Johnson arrived, pretending to be a CIA agent, and had Sousa take her to Simmons and Coulson, and a Hunter began to activate Helius, despite attempts by Melinda May and Yo-Yo Rodriguez to stop her. Coulson locked Sousa in a cell and left the building and came across Vega, who explained that the device had been activated and could explode. Coulson ordered Vega to evacuate the scientists, and May and Rodriguez attempted to fight the Chronicom Hunter. While Chronicom Hunters nearly killed Rodriguez and Sousa, Simmons and Johnson managed to activate an electromagnetic pulse that shut down Project Helius, Coulson, and the Chronicom Hunters.[1]
