Director Phillip J. "Phil" Coulson is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. field agent who worked close to Nick Fury and the Avengers. Being mortally wounded by Loki, Coulson was brought back to life and eventually became the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. after the organization's collapse.
