"Ladies and gentlemen, straight from engineering and complete with all the modifications that you requested."
Leo Fitz to Jeffrey Mace[src]

The Patriot Suit is a specialized body armor used by Jeffrey Mace during his combat missions as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.. In the wake of Mace's reveal that he was not super powered, Leo Fitz redesigned the suit so it could inject him with the Patriot Serum during a mission to keep his strength up.

The Patriot fights against the Chinatown Crew

The Patriot Suit was designed to fit with the superhuman strength provided to Jeffrey Mace by the Patriot Serum. Mace wore it for the first time during the Battle at the Chinatown Crew Headquarters, during which Mace fought and defeated several Chinatown Crew gangsters along other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The Patriot Suit was also revealed to the media and the public when Mace met Quake after the battle and officially recognized her as an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.[1]

The Patriot tries to intimidate the Watchdogs

When the Watchdogs attempted to kill Mace, he evacuated with a Quinjet, who was also attacked and crashed in the middle of nowhere after Burrows was forcefully ejected out of the plane, depriving Mace from his Patriot Suit and his Patriot Serum. Mace managed to reclaim the briefcase containing the equipment, but was wounded before injecting himself with the Serum, forcing him to be saved by Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie and to reveal the truth about his true nature. Nonetheless, Coulson told Mace to wear the suit and to act as if he was the Patriot the Watchdogs suspected him to be, providing Coulson and Mackenzie with a distraction. The idea proved to be successful and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents ultimately managed to defeat the Watchdogs.[2]

Upgraded Version

After the true nature of Jeffrey Mace and his need to rely on the Patriot Serum to gain his super-strength were revealed, Leo Fitz designed an upgraded version of the Patriot Suit thanks to which Mace could directly inject the Serum when need be without using syringes. However, Jemma Simmons advised Mace not to use this new suit, as the Patriot Serum was endangering Mace's health.

However, when Tucker Shockley was captured and almost blew the Zephyr One up, Mace declared that he had to wear his Suit to be ready in all circumstances. Therefore, Mace took his Suit to help to capture Shockley again. However, the operation turned out to be an ambush orchestrated by the Watchdogs to abduct Mace. Mace decided to sacrifice himself for his colleagues to escape and was captured. He was imprisoned in Krasnoyarsk Krai and stripped of his Suit[3], which was abandoned in Nome, Alaska, where he was reclaimed by S.H.I.E.L.D.[4]

Taken by a Replica

Jeffrey Mace's LMD wearing the Patriot Suit

When Jeffrey Mace was replaced by a Life-Model Decoy, the android replica took the Patriot Suit for himself, wearing it in the Playground while plotting to capture the registered Inhumans as well as Daisy Johnson and Jemma Simmons. When Johnson and Simmons figured out that they were surrounded by Life-Model Decoys and tried to destroy them, Mace's LMD fought Johnson while wearing the Patriot Suit. Although she was wounded, Johnson managed to take down the LMDs, including Mace's.[5]

Virtual Recreation

"Man, I dreamed about what your suit would look like. I made a few sketches, but this is actually way cooler."
Phil Coulson to Patriot[src]

The Patriot Suit was featured in the alternate reality known as the Framework, where it was also worn by Jeffrey Mace who led the S.H.I.E.L.D. resistance against HYDRA.[6]

"Director Mace, say goodbye to your briefcase, because... you now have a serum-delivery device on the belt of your suit. Just one turn, and the injection is delivered directly into the... The tests didn't go that well, did they? Okay. Well, in that case, it's also good that we added a heart monitor and a GPS."
Leo Fitz to Jeffrey Mace[src]

The suit is worn by Jeffrey Mace to protect him from sustaining injuries during field missions. An updated version of the suit includes a heart monitor, a GPS tracker as well as a serum delivery mechanism triggered by a switch on the belt.

In chronological order:

  • The S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on the chest and the silver stars on each gauntlet are nods to Patriot's costume from the comics, which includes both of these features on the same places but with an eagle instead of the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo.
