"Come and get some, space dogs!"
Rocket Raccoon[src]

The Outriders are a mindless species of aliens subservient to Thanos and the Black Order, used to fight in the Battle of Wakanda and the Battle of Earth.

History

Infinity War

Battle of Wakanda

"You are in Wakanda now. Thanos will have nothing but dust and blood."
"We... have blood to spare."
T'Challa and Proxima Midnight[src]

The Outriders were deployed in Thanos and the Black Order's assault on Earth, specifically in their attempt to retrieve the Mind Stone from Wakanda. Several Dropships were released from Sanctuary II and were sent crashing down in and around Wakanda; the doors opened and the Outriders were unleashed upon the Wakandan plains.

The Outriders furiously attacking Wakanda

Along with the Black Order, the Outriders faced the Wakandan army and Captain America's Avengers faction, throwing themselves at the force field in an attempt to destroy it. Many are killed, but as they continue, the force field begins to falter. When some begin to circle around the force field, the Wakandans are forced to let them through, prompting the aforementioned army and faction to engage. As the two sides battle, the remaining Black Order, Corvus GlaiveProxima Midnight, and Cull Obsidian, attack Vision, Scarlet Witch, and the Hulkbuster. Meanwhile, the Outriders are refusing to be bested by their opponents, relentlessly continued their assault.

Soon afterwards as the heroes are beginning to be overwhelmed by the seemingly endless waves of Outriders, ThorRocket Raccoon, and Groot join the battle, greatly turning the tide of the battle. Some Outriders attempted to flee, although they are all eventually decimated by the Wakandans and the heroes.[1]

Battle of Earth

Following the end of the Infinity War, where half life in the universe was killed when Thanos snapped his fingers, the Avengers resulted in time traveling to the past in order to recover the Infinity Stones before these were destroyed so they could brought back to life all those who died. However, when the Thanos past of 2014 was informed about this due Nebula's glitching, he captured the future self of his adoptive daughter and along the Black Order, the Chitauri, the Sakaarans and the Outriders, traveled to 2023 with a new plan: destroy the universe and rebuild it as he wanted

Outriders&Explosions-FromEndgame

Outriders are blow up by Hawkeye's arrows

Following Thanos attack on the facility, he deployed a group of Outriders to hunt down the Infinity Gauntlet. As Hawkeye was searching for the other Avengers he noticed the gauntlet on the ground, then hearing movement behind him. He drew his bow and quickly turned around, firing a flare arrow towards the movement, where he caught a glimpse of the Outriders. He grabs the gauntlet, and ran from the creatures, trying to protect the Infinity Stones. As Hawkeye made his way through the tunnels, he found himself about to be overrun by Outriders, so he started planting explosive arrows along the tunnel. The arrows then went off, causing the Outriders to be caught in the explosion, with Hawkeye just avoiding it. However, when he looked back, he noticed the Outriders were still alive and heading for him. He then fired a grapple arrow from his Wristbow and scaled upwards to safety. However, this didn't stop the Outriders, who continued to viciously go after Hawkeye, climbing upwards to get him. He then drew his sword and began to fend off the ruthless creatures, slicing them in half as they leaped at him. He then made it to the level above, eliminating all of them.

However, when it seemed that Thanos was going to win again, all of Thanos' victims came back to life and the decisive battle for the fate of the universe took place. As their fellow alien soldiers, many Outriders ended up losing their lives against the Avengers' forces. However, the battle came to an end when Thanos attempted once more to use the Nano Gauntlet to erase all life in the universe only for Iron Man to snap his fingers with the Infinity Stones, causing Thanos' army, including the Outriders that were present at the battle, to turn to dust.[2]

Characteristic Traits

"You see the teeth on those things?"
Falcon to War Machine[src]

The Outriders are characterized by their leathery black and yellow skin. Most of the Outriders have four, clawed arms, although there are some that have been shown to have six. Unique to the latter, 2 pointed protrusions that spread out from come behind their heads. They can adopt both bipedal and quadrupedal postures to walk and run. Their faces lack any visible eyes, and their mouths are equipped with two rows of razor-sharp teeth. All Outriders have blue-colored blood.

Unlike their sister species, the Outriders are mindless, only following basic commands given by the Black Order, constantly throwing themselves against Wakanda's force field, killing themselves in the process. Some of them opted to circle around the force field to attack the building which housed Vision, but upon the force field finally opening, they changed course and made their way to the battleground. This suggests that Outriders operate solely on their bloodlust. Still, the Outriders do have some semblance of intelligence, as some have been shown to pilot their dropships. They also have a sense of self-preservation, with some attempting to run from Thor when he unleashed his powers on them.

The Outriders do not utilize advanced weaponry. However, they possess greater superhuman physical abilities, making them fearsome adversaries in battle. During the Battle of Wakanda, Captain America struggled to fight a lone Outrider, whereas he had no problem fighting the Chitauri during the Battle of New York.[1]

Trivia

  • In the comics, the Outriders were a race of genetically engineered humanoid creatures with the purpose of serving their master until they die. Thanos used Outriders to find new planets inhabited by weak species he would conquer.
  • When designing the Outriders for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios found itself concerned that the creatures too closely resembled another Marvel Comics property, Venom, which didn't have the rights of. Marvel ended up making minor changes to the Outriders to prevent that from happening.[3]
  • Although non-canon, the book Thanos: Titan Consumed explains that the Outriders are a result of Thanos combining samples of DNA from the Chitauri, himself, and of various species that he killed.[4]
