- ―Loki[src]
Odin Borson is the King of Asgard and protector of the Nine Realms. As king, he created a weapon to fight his wars, which he called Mangog. He sealed Mangog in the Cave of Ages, but it was later released inadvertently by Thor. Odin, Thor, and Loki defeated Mangog together, and Odin released the souls of the Vanir which he had trapped in the weapon years prior.
Biography[]
Using Mangog[]
Odin created a weapon known as Mangog in order to fight his enemies. As Vanaheim was preparing to wage war on Asgard, they built Frostgrinder to serve as their version of the Bifrost Bridge. However, Odin used Frostgrinder to send Mangog to Vanaheim so that he could consume the Vanir's souls. Odin locked Mangog in the Cave of Ages on Niflheim using Scabrite chains. He included a message in his own lost language.[1]
Bestowing Mjølnir[]
Odin had a son, Thor, and decided to entrust him with the hammer Mjølnir. During a ceremony on Asgard, Odin declared that only those who were worthy could possess the hammer's power. Odin asked Thor to swear to protect Asgard, which he did.[2]
Frost Giant Invasion[]
Odin looked out at his kingdom and watched the Bifrost Bridge. The Frost Giants then invaded Asgard, and Odin was warned about it by Loki. As Odin and Loki left the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf with Loki and a gorup of Einherjar, he saw Thor holding a dying Sif. Loki tried to talk about the attack, but Odin silenced and approached Thor, telling him to find peace in the fact that Sif was a hero who was destined for Valhalla. However, Thor hit Odin's hand said that he wanted justice rather than peace, wanting to take an army to destroy the Frost Giants. Odin told Thor that war would only lead to more death, but Thor got angrier, accusing Odin of not caring about Sif's death. Thor decided to go to Niflheim himself, causing Odin to get angry and demand that no one go. He and the Einherjar returned to the inside of the palace.
Odin sat with Sif's body while Loki explained that Sif meant a lot to Thor. Odin told Loki that he planned to resurrect her using the Odinforce out of fear of Thor's actions. Loki said that Thor would continue to wage war regardless, and Odin agreed. However, Loki said that bringing Sif back would delay Thor's actions, and that Thor would defend Asgard while Odin recovered in the Odinsleep. Odin cut Loki off and resurrected Sif, announcing his need to enter the Odinsleep and that Thor would be in charge. Odin then walked off, encouraged by Loki, and entered the Odinsleep.[1]
Mangog's Attack[]
Thor accidentally unleashed Mangog, leading it to attack Asgard. Odin told Loki that Mangog would be invicible until the horde feeding its power was destroyed and started fighting Mangog in the Althing. Odin was joined by Thor and Loki as he was blasted backward. Odin told Thor to destroy Mangog. While Thor distracted Mangog, Thor threw his spear at it. Mangog then turned around, allowing Thor to hit it with Mjølnir. Odin retrieved his spear and againt threw it at Mangog while it fought Thor, causing it pain.
Once Thor defeated Mangog, Odin told him that Asgard was saved by Thor. Thor confessed to having released Mangog, but Odin responded by sharing responsibility for having created Mangog. Loki tried to say that they defeated the beast together, but Odin cut him off. He revealed to Thor that he was aware of Loki's deception leading to Mangog's release, expressing relief that some had learned redemption. Sif thanked Odin for resurrecting her, but Odin said that she did not need to and that the Nine Realms would benefit from her being alive. Odin approached Mangog and released the Vanir from its form.[1]
