In 2009, Black Widow was tasked with escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran. Upon reaching the city of Odesa in Ukraine, they were attacked by Winter Soldier, who made them lose control of their vehicle and fall off a cliff. Black Widow managed to pull the engineer and herself out, but Winter Soldier, who was waiting for them, shot through Romanoff's stomach and killed the engineer.[1]

In an alternate universe, Hope van Dyne was given an assignment outside Odesa during her time as an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. but was killed through unknown circumstances. Her death drove her father, Hank Pym, on a vengeful mission to assassinate the Avengers candidates in retaliation.[2]
