- "If you're looking for the man Hector Ayala saved on the subway platform, sadly, he's no longer here."
- ―Matt Murdock to Connor Powell[src]
Upon being saved from corrupt NYPD officers by Hector Ayala at the 168th Street Station, Nicky Torres returned to his apartment. However, because Kel Shanahan, one of the officers, was killed by a subway train in the skirmish, Ayala was arrested for his death, although in reality Shanahan had tripped and fallen into the train's path. Realizing that Torres could get Ayala acquitted if he testified, Connor Powell and Williams planned to kill Torres at his apartment.

Matt Murdock advises Nicky Torres to leave
Matt Murdock discovered officers' plan when he trailed Powell. He made his way to Torres' apartment and warned Torres that the men were coming to kill him due to the role he could play in Ayala's trial. While initially reluctant, Torres heeded Murdock's advice when he heard Powell and Williams running up the stairs to his apartment. Murdock told Torres to head to Fort Tryon Park for extraction before Torres left via the fire escape.

Connor Powell holds Matt Murdock against the wall
Murdock unlocked the door, allowing Powell and Williams to enter. The former recognized Murdock as Ayala's lawyer, to which Murdock told him that Torres was long gone. Powell held Murdock against the wall while Williams searched the apartment, finding that Murdock was telling the truth. Powell menacingly asked Murdock where Torres had gone, but Murdock told them he was visually impaired. Powell threw Murdock the ground and began beating him up with Williams.

Matt Murdock brutally beats Connor Powell
Williams held a gun to Murdock's head and prepared to kill him, but Murdock grabbed the gun and fought Williams, knocking him out by slamming his head into a table. Murdock then went after Powell, flinging him into the refrigerator before slamming him headfirst into the ground. Murdock panted heavily and caught his breath before picking up his glasses and letting out a visceral yell.[1]
