Encountering Captain Carter[]
- "The war ended almost seventy years ago. You going to be okay?"
- ―Nick Fury to Captain Carter[src]
Together with Clint Barton, Nick Fury was present at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility to witness the results of Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.. During the tests, the Tesseract opened up a wormhole, allowing Captain Carter and some remains of the Champion of HYDRA to emerge go through it. Fury asked Carter to put down her sword, before Barton explained to him who she was. When Carter inquired where Steve Rogers was, Fury informed her that World War II ended seventy years ago. He asked Carter if she would be okay, to which she replied positively, as that they won the war.[2]
Briefing Captain Carter[]
- "Look, Carter, if the stories are true, then the HYDRA Stomper is responsible for some of the world's worst acts of terror, which cost the lives of dozens of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, including friends of mine."
- ―Nick Fury to Captain Carter[src]
Fury would later recruit Captain Carter into S.H.I.E.L.D., where she would work together with Natasha Romanoff. During the mission on the Lemurian Star, Carter discovered that Steve Rogers was alive, despite Fury claiming that he died, so she confronted him at the Triskelion about it. Fury stood by his claims that Rogers died in 1953 while fighting HYDRA but admitted that there were unconfirmed rumors about his survival going around for decades. Carter was shocked that she had never been debrifed on that, to which Fury replied that he chose not to, since he dismissed them as nonsense.
Fury then told Carter that if the rumors are true, the HYDRA Stomper is responsible for some of the worst terrorist acts, which claimed the lives of dozens of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, which included some of his friends. Although Carter refused to believe that the Rogers she knew was capable of that, Fury corroborated Romanoff's theory that he might have been under the Red Room's control. Fury then informed Carter and Romanoff that S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to decode the transmissions from Lemurian Star and found a lead on the HYDRA Stomper's mission, so Carter stated that she would be leading the STRIKE team. Fury suggested that Carter should stand down, considering that the HYDRA Stomper is the world's most dangerous killer, but Carter refused to listen, only demanding to know what was his mission.[3]
HYDRA Stomper Attack[]
- "Lethal force, sir?"
"That thing is an international terrorist attempting to assassinate a U.S. offical. I'm trusting you to do the right thing." - ―Black Widow and Nick Fury[src]
The Triskelion was attacked by the HYDRA Stomper, who attempted to assassinate Bucky Barnes. Fury ordered Black Widow to eliminate the HYDRA Stomper with lethal force. However, when Barnes blocked Black Widow's line of fire, Fury told her to stand down.[3]
