Nick Fury was appointed Director of the international peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D. As part of this job, he worked with and saved the lives of many Skrulls, including one named Gravik. Fury promised the Skrulls that he would help find them a home planet, but was unable to deliver on the promise. Fury began working with Maria Hill, who served as his right hand. However, many people close to Fury lost their lives, upsetting Fury and causing him to retire from fighting. This led Skrulls to get frustrated with Fury and become radicalized against humans.[2]

Gravik then sent a Skrull to attack Fury, and Maria Hill worked to protect him.[2]
