Ivan Vanko's Imprisonment[]
Tony Stark visits Ivan Vanko
Due to his attack on Tony Stark, Ivan Vanko was brought into the French Police Station, where Stark visited him. Inside the station, Stark pressed Ivan about his ability to recreate the Arc Reactor, albeit a lesser version of Stark's. Ivan replied talking about his father and how he was the only reason Stark was alive, referring to Anton's work on the Arc Reactor. Stark told Ivan that the only reason he was alive was that Ivan had a shot and missed. Ivan disagreed that he missed because, if one could make God bleed, people would cease to believe in him.
Ivan Vanko was transferred from a French Police Station to Batiment B3 due to the Duel of Monaco. While imprisoned, Vanko was approached by a guard, who supplied his food for the day. Vanko was interested to see a message in the food, telling him to enjoy the potatoes. Thus, Vanko examined the potatoes and found that the vegetable was actually a Potato Bomb. Suddenly, a prisoner wearing Vanko's same uniform was brought into the cell. Knowing what he had to do, Vanko knocked the cellmate out and planted the bomb, making it seem as though Vanko himself died. Vanko was then kidnapped and brought to Justin Hammer.[1]

Escape from Batiment B3[]
Ivan Vanko was transferred to Batiment B3 in Nice from a French Police Station, where he waited to be brought by Interpol to a prison in Russia. He was placed in a cell with a French prisoner who was afraid of him, telling his cellmate to stay away and survive. A guard at the prison, who Vanko recognized as a member of the Ten Rings, brought food to Vanko and told him to drink it. Vanko realized that the mashed potatoes were a disguised bomb and killed his cellmate, who had the same number as Vanko on his uniform and would be used to tell the public that Vanko died.
Vanko placed the bomb on the wall, causing an explosion that allowed him to leave his cell and walk down the hall of the way station. He walked through the prison and fought the guards, but suddenly got ambushed with a bag placed over his head and flown away and taken to the United States.[2]
