- "Guilty of a crime against the Sacred Timeline? Absolutely not, you have the wrong person."
"Oh, really? And who should we have?"
"I suspect, the Avengers. I came into possession of the Tesseract because they traveled through time, no doubt in a last ditch effort to stave off my ascent to God King." - ―Loki and Ravonna Renslayer[src]
The "New York Time Heist" Universe is a universe visited by the Avengers during their mission to retrieve the Infinity Stones from different points in history.
History[]
Early History[]
Asgardian Royalty[]
- "You know, when I was young, she'd do these little bits of magic for me. Like turn a flower into a frog or cast fireworks over the water. It all seemed impossible. She told me that I'd be able to do it too because… Because I could do anything."
- ―Loki to Sylvie Laufeydottir[src]
Born to Laufey on Jotunheim, Loki was soon rejected by his father and taken in by his greatest enemy, Odin. Growing up alongside Odin's biological son Thor, Loki would pick up sorcery much like his adoptive mother Frigga whereas Thor would take after his father and become a warrior.[1][2]
Loki, God of Mischief[]
As he grew up, Loki would begin to use his magical abilities for mischievous acts, earning him the title of "God of Mischief".[1] One these tricks had Loki transform his adoptive brother into a frog. Loki then led his fellow Asgardians to believe that his brother had disappeared before Thor attacked Loki in his new frog form.[1]
In a different prank, Loki would cut off part of the hair of Asgardian warrior Sif while she was asleep. In return, Sif would scold Loki and punch him in the face and then the crotch.[3]
"Death" of Bucky Barnes[]
- "Bucky... is... alive."
- ―Captain America to Captain America[src]
During World War II, Captain America's best friend Bucky Barnes would seemingly die, when he was in fact captured by HYDRA.[4]
D.B. Cooper Hijacking[]
- "Uh, Miss?"
"Yes, Mr. Cooper?"
"You might want to take a look at that note. I have a bomb." - ―Florence Schaffner and Loki[src]
In 1971, upon losing a bet to adoptive brother, Loki would plan to hijack a plane on Earth under the alias "D.B. Cooper". Telling flight attendant Florence Schaffner that he had a bomb, "Cooper" demanded $200,000 in cash. Upon landing in Seattle, Washington, the airline was able to successfully fulfill "Cooper's" request. He then demanded they take off again before grabbing parachute and jumping from the plane with a duffle bag full of the cash. Upon completing the heist, Heimdall used the Bifrost Bridge to bring Loki back to Asgard. Due to "Cooper's" mysterious disappearance, this hijacking became one of Earth's greatest unsolved mysteries.[1]
Thor's Banishment[]
- "Some years ago my brother was banished from Asgard and sent to Earth. And when he came back he was different. He changed somehow. I thought it was weakness. I mocked him, said he'd gone soft."
- ―Loki to Sylvie Laufeydottir[src]
In 2010, Thor was banished to Earth by his father Odin.[5] During Thor's banishment, Loki would learn that he was adopted and that his true heritage was that of the Jotun king Laufey.[2] Upon Thor's return to Asgard, Loki witnessed Thor's personal growth caused by his banishment. Loki mocked Thor for this, believing that he'd gone soft.[5]
Chitauri Invasion[]
- "It's funny. For someone 'born to rule', you sure do lose a lot. You might even say it's in your nature."
"You know, things didn't turn out so well for the last person who said that to me."
"Oh, yeah, Phil Coulson. Didn't the Avengers come together to literally avenge him by defeating you?" - ―Mobius M. Mobius and Loki[src]
In hopes of getting back at his adoptive brother and father, Loki would ally himself with Thanos and his Chitauri army to execute an invasion of Earth. This caused him to come into conflict with S.H.I.E.L.D., who recruited Thor alongside five of Earth's mightiest heroes. Upon Loki's murder of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, the previously dysfunctional heroes came together to form the Avengers, ultimately defeating Loki at the Battle of New York.[1][4]
Time Heist[]
Theft of the Time Stone[]
- "I'm sorry, I can't help you, Bruce. If I give you the Time Stone to help your reality, I'm dooming my own."
- ―Ancient One to Hulk[src]
Amid the Battle of New York, a different group of Avengers would travel from the future in order to retrieve the Mind, Space, and Time Stones. While Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Captain America would head to Stark Tower to acquire the Mind and Space Stones, Hulk would head to the New York Sanctum to acquire the Time Stone.
Upon arriving in the Sanctum, the Hulk would encounter the Ancient One. Unaware of the fact that Stephen Strange wouldn't become the Sorcerer Supreme until five years later, the Ancient One informed him that Strange was currently performing surgery and asked Hulk what he wanted from Strange. When Hulk pointed to the Eye of Agamotto around her neck, the Ancient One refused to give him the Time Stone. Not taking no for answer, Hulk attempted to take the stone by force before being sent into his astral form by the Ancient One.
Hulk argued with the Ancient One, hoping to sway her opinion so that she would give him stone. Her opinion remained unchanged as she was worried that its absence would doom her reality. Hulk told her that this problem would be avoided if they returned the stone from the moment it was taken. The Ancient One still wasn't convinced until Hulk mentioned that his universe's Stephen Strange willingly gave up the Time Stone to Thanos. Knowing that Strange was supposed to be the best of the Masters of the Mystic Arts, she was finally convinced and returned Hulk to his body and gave him the Time Stone.[4]
Theft of the Mind Stone[]
- "Sorry, Cap. We can't give you the Scepter."
"I'm going to have to call the Director."
"That's okay. Trust me. Hail HYDRA." - ―Brock Rumlow, Jasper Sitwell and Captain America[src]
When the Avengers defeated Loki, his Scepter was taken by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s STRIKE who were secretly working for HYDRA, although the Avengers didn't know that at the time. In an effort to take the Mind Stone located inside of the Scepter, a future version of Captain America impersonated his past self and intercepted the STRIKE team on Stark Tower's elevator. In order to convince STRIKE to hand over the Scepter without making a fuss, Cap used his future knowledge to convince them that he was also a member of HYDRA. This ploy worked and STRIKE handed over the Scepter to the Captain.[4]
Attempted Theft of the Space Stone[]
- "All right, you're up, little buddy. There's our stone."
- ―Tony Stark to Ant-Man[src]
Meanwhile in the lobby of Stark Tower, Alexander Pierce attempted to take the Tesseract and the now captured Loki from Tony Stark and Thor. Thor refused however, causing a small confrontation between the two parties. Amid the commotion, a future Tony Stark had a shrunken down Ant-Man interfere with his past self's Arc Reactor, causing him to have a heart attack and drop the briefcase containing the Tesseract.
With everyone now distracted, Ant-Man flicked the dropped briefcase over to Stark's future counterpart. While Stark attempted to exit the tower with the briefcase, he was knocked to the ground when an enraged Hulk burst into the lobby. With the Tesseract also sent flying when Stark was knocked down, it landed at the feet of Loki, who picked it up and used it to teleport away. Thor then used Mjølnir to restart this universe's Stark's heart, before he discovered Loki's absence which enraged him.[4]
Clash of the Captain Americas[]
- "I can do this all day."
"Yeah, I know. I know." - ―Captain America and Captain America[src]
In search of Loki, Captain America encountered his future self, who he believed to be the God of Mischief in disguise, on the fourteenth floor of Stark Tower. While 2023 Cap attempted to deescalate the situation, 2012 Cap initiated a duel between the two. When both of their shields were knocked over a railing, they engaged in hand-to-hand combat with each other which resulted in both of them tumbling a few floors down.
Upon landing, 2023 Cap's compass fell out of his pocket. Seeing it, 2012 Cap became confused and enraged and put 2023 Cap in a chokehold, only being released when he told 2012 Cap that Bucky Barnes was alive. Shocking 2012 Cap, 2023 Cap used the opportunity to incapacitate his past self with the Scepter and make his escape.[4]
Aftermath of the Time Heist[]
Future Avengers Leave[]
Having lost Space Stone and lacking the necessary Pym Particles to attempt the heist again and get home, the time traveling Avengers felt defeated. That was until Tony Stark realized that they could acquire more particles and the Tesseract by travelling to Camp Lehigh in 1970. Captain America then instructed Ant-Man to take the Scepter back to Avengers Compound. Stark and Cap then traveled to a different alternate timeline while Ant-Man and the Hulk traveled back to their original timeline with the Mind and Time Stones in tow.[4]
Returning the Stones[]
- "Remember, you have to return the stones at the exact moment you got them. Or you're gonna open up a bunch of nasty alternative realities."
"Don't worry, Bruce. Clip all the branches." - ―Bruce Banner and Steve Rogers[src]
Upon the Avengers successfully bringing back all of those killed by the Snap, Steve Rogers returned the Mind and Time Stones to this reality.[4]
Capture of Loki[]
- "On behalf of the Time Variance Authority, I hereby arrest you for crimes against the Sacred Timeline."
- ―Hunter B-15 to Loki[src]
Meanwhile, Loki landed to the Gobi Desert following his escape with the Tesseract. Loki attempted to show his superiority to a group of locals by boasting to them upon a rock, but they didn't understand him and questioned his arrival. Loki's focus of attention was soon changed as Hunter B-15 and her Minutemen entered this timeline through a Timedoor.
Coming to arrest Loki for his crimes against the Sacred Timeline, B-15 initially asked Loki to surrender peacefully. When Loki refused, B-15 hit him with a Time Stick and placed a Time Collar around his neck. She then took the Tesseract, with her Minutemen taking Loki back to the Time Variance Authority Office. They also placed a Reset Charge down in this reality, erasing Loki's escape from its history.[1]
