"Didn't your old man come up on the Mets?"
"He got cut. He played for the championship New York Nines team."

New York Nine was a baseball team located in New York. In 1987, the team was owned by Nate Jackson.

History[]

Recruiting Axton[]

"If I had ended up on the Nebraska team, there was a good chance I never would have ended up playing for the New York Nines."
Eddie Axton[src]

The New York Mets recruited Eddie Axton after he received lots of attention for his success on a New Jersey minor league team. However, he was eventually cut from the Mets, and he joined the New York Nine.[1][2]

1987 Championship Series[]

"There was something in the air that night, a feeling that anything was possible. All of us were on top of our game that night, and it was beautiful."
―New York Nine Head Coach[src]

On October 15, 1987, the New York Nine defeated San Francisco in Game Seven of the 1987 Championship Series. People watched from all over the world to witness the underdog team defeat the favorite to take home the championship. At the bottom of the sixth inning, Nine fans considered the game to be over. However, the then three-year veteran and backup center fielder, Eddie Axton, knew that if he were able to knock out two of San Francisco's most consistent hitters, the Nine would be back in contention for the championship. In the third inning, Axton played a pivotal role in game six as well when he was able to catch the balls of two of San Francisco's heaviest hitters.[2]

The Nine won the championship, and Axton earned a championship ring.[1]
