On April 5, 2017, Freeform greenlit New Warriors with a straight-to-series order.[3] On July 10, 2017, the first cast members were revealed.[5] Filming for the pilot episode had begun by June 2017, in Atlanta.[8]
On November 1, 2017, it was announced that Freeform was unable to find a time slot for New Warriors in their 2018 lineup, resulting in Marvel pulling the series from the network. The series was being shopped elsewhere.[1]
On June 7, 2018, Jeph Loeb said Marvel Television was still looking for a network to air New Warriors.[9]
On September 16, 2019, it was announced that the series did not find a new home after being passed on by multiple networks, including Hulu and Disney+, and was officially cancelled.[2] Showrunner Kevin Biegel later stated that the show would have had a lot of LGBTQ+ representation, and that a Marvel executive (who was unnamed, but labeled as "homophobic" by Biegel) took aim at the show for being "very, very proudly gay".[10]
