- "You're... You're Hawkeye!"
"And who the hell are you?" - ―Kate Bishop and Clint Barton
Never Meet Your Heroes is the first episode of the first season of Hawkeye.
Synopsis[]
Archer Kate Bishop lands in the middle of a criminal conspiracy, forcing Hawkeye out of retirement.
Plot[]
In 2012, a young Kate Bishop is living with her wealthy parents, Eleanor and Derek Bishop, in a penthouse in New York City when the Battle of New York begins. During the attack, one of the Chitauri targets Kate, but she is saved by Hawkeye. She and Eleanor survive the Chitauri Invasion, although Derek does not. Inspired by Barton, Kate decides to take up archery in order to protect her family when another such threat emerges.
Twelve years later, Kate attempts to impress her college friends with her marksmanship abilities by shooting arrows at a bell. She succeeds at making it ring, but also unintentionally destroys the clock tower. As she returns to the city for the holidays, Eleanor briefly admonishes her daughter for her recklessness before revealing that their old acquaintance Jack Duquesne had moved in with her. Kate is invited to a socialite gala Eleanor and Jack are attending, where she learns from her old friend Armand Duquesne III that the two were actually engaged. Stunned with the discovery, she momentarily retreats outside, where she finds a dog standing alone in the snow.
When she heads back inside, Kate catches Armand angrily threatening Eleanor in his office. Concerned, she stealthily follows him into the hotel's cellar, where Jack joins him in a black market auction of various items, which include Ronin's retractable sword and cowl obtained from the wreckage of the Avengers Compound. Armand outbids Jack for the katana, but the bid for the cowl is interrupted when the Tracksuit Mafia bomb their way into the room in search of a watch. In the chaos, Jack grabs the sword and returns to Eleanor. Kate sees the suit, puts it on, and fights the Mafia off by herself. Outside, Kate finds the dog attacking a Tracksuit mafioso before fleeing into traffic. She is able to save it from being run over by a vehicle, and the Mafia are forced to retreat when authorities arrive.
After dropping the dog off at her apartment and feeding it pizza, Kate begins to investigate Armand's suspected connection with the bombing. She infiltrates his home, but finds him dead on the floor with a single stab wound. She is forced to flee when his maid arrives and discovers his body. Meanwhile, it is the last day of Clint Barton's vacation with his children after his wife Laura recommended he spend more time with them. He and his children go to a theater to watch Rogers: The Musical, but they leave in the middle of the show after Barton is reminded of Natasha Romanoff. After a long day of urban festivities, they return to their hotel room and a news report displays Kate in the suit as a potential sighting of the enigmatic Ronin. Remembering his time as the ruthless vigilante, Barton runs out and intercepts her as she is being ambushed by the Tracksuit Mafia.
Barton is about to attack his target for using the Ronin suit, but is surprised to find a girl under the mask instead. Kate is stunned to finally be face-to-face with her idol, Hawkeye.

Trivia[]
- Originally, the flashback to the Battle of New York at the beginning of this episode depicted the letter "K" in the Stark Tower logo as still being attached to the tower when Hawkeye lept off of it, contradicting The Avengers, where the "K" was blown off before that event occurred. In January 2022, the episode was edited to depict the correct lettering, with the "T" and "K" being absent and part of the "R" being present.[2]
