- "This isn't about faith, Kaecilius, this is about whether or not you've deciphered the Cagliostro rituals correctly! If you're wrong..."
"If I'm wrong, then he will ignore us and we will each die our own slow and natural death. But we're not the ones knocking, he is, and he's waiting for someone like us to let him in." - ―Nervous Zealot and Kaecilius[src]
The Nervous Zealot was a follower of Kaecilius who questioned his leader's faith in summoning Dormammu. As a result of his lack of faith, the Zealot failed to summon Dormammu and was executed by Kaecilius for not being a true believer.
Biography[]
Joining the Zealots[]
Theft of the Book of Cagliostro[]
The Zealot stands behind Kaecilius
Having joined the Zealots due to his own lack of faith with the teachings from Kamar-Taj, the Nervous Zealot helped his leader Kaecilius and the other Zealots to steal the page from the Book of Cagliostro, aiding Kaecilius in executing the Kamar-Taj Librarian first. However, when the plans of the Zealots were discovered by the Ancient One, she found and confronted the group, forcing them to escape to London where the Ancient One battled them inside the Mirror Dimension. The Nervous Zealot fought alongside his allies until Kaecilius was able to use his Sling Ring to allow his allies to escape just in time[1]
Losing Faith in Kaecilius[]
The Zealot fails to contact Dormammu
Despite their recent success in reclaiming the Book of Cagliostro, the Nervous Zealot began questioning if Kaecilius was wrong and if he had deciphered the Cagliostro rituals correctly, with Kaecilius insisted that the Magic would work and that if they all had faith, then Dormammu would contact them and grant them new power from the Dark Dimension.
The Zealot is cut down and killed by Kaecilius
The Zealots then began the ritual in which they read the words from the book to attempt to contact Dormammu, resulting in Kaecilius and the other Zealots, including Lucian Aster having the symbol of the Dark Dimension burned into their foreheads. However, the Nervous Zealot discovered that his own ritual had failed and he had no burn on his forehead. Seeing this, Kaecilius deemed him to not be a man of faith and summoned a blade, which he then used to kill him.[3]
Personality[]
After the Nervous Zealot turned against the Ancient One, he joined Kaecilius intending to bring Dormammu to Earth. However, he was afraid of the risk involved with their plan, which led to his death. However, as the rest of the Zealots were either ruthlessly slain or transmuted into Mindless Ones, and the Nervous Zealot dared to question Kaecilius, it can be inferred that his cowardice was actually wisdom.
