- "Well, well, well, if it isn't the Super Nova. You blew up our shield. You blew up our space invaders. Thanks to you, the planet's actually getting its life back."
- ―Howard the Duck to Nebula[src]
Nebula is a former member of Black Order and the adoptive daughter of Thanos. When Ronan the Accuser killed her father and sister, Nebula was rescued by the Nova Corps and recruited by Irani Rael. As a Nova corpsman, Nebula investigated the killing of Yondu and discovered Rael's conspiracy to disable Xandar's planetary shield and allow Ronan to invade the planet. Together with Howard the Duck, Korg, Groot and Miek, Nebula successfully stopped Ronan and the corrupt Nova corpsmen, ending Xandar's lockdown for good and becoming the new Nova Prime.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Black Order[]
Nebula floats alone
- "I was lost, adrift in the ruins of my past. Until someone saw the light in me. With compassion and kindness, Nova Prime gave me a way forward."
- ―Nebula[src]
Nebula was adopted by Thanos, who was a warlord who trained her to be lethal. Whenever she failed, Thanos would replace a piece of her with machinary. Nebula also grew up with an adopted Zehoberei sister named Gamora. One day, Thanos' ally, Ronan the Accuser, turned on Thanos and was able to kill him. In the attack, Ronan killed Gamora too, leaving Nebula to drift in space. Nebula was eventually found by the Nova Corps and taken in by Nova Prime, making Nebula feel as though she owed Rael her life.[1]
Nova Corps[]
Rise and Fall[]
Nebula watches Xandar get locked in
Nebula rose through the ranks and was able to become a member of the Nove Corps. She took the oath and began work. As a corpsman, she took down the imfamous hacker known as Yon-Rogg and also had relations with Yondu Udonta, who one time remarked that they were a good team. Soon there after, Ronan arrived to finish his work. He set up an attack on Xandar, forcing Irani Rael's hand and making her put up the Planetary Shield, which would keep Xandar locked down for fifty years, but away from Ronan's reach.[1]
The Dark Days[]
The Death of Udonta[]
Nebula arrives at Yondu's crime scene
- "Is there a problem, Corpsman?"
"This is Xandar. All we got are problems." - ―Garthan Saal and Nebula[src]
Five years later, Xandar had turned to darkness in isolation. Nebula reported on the scene of a murder. The murder of none other than Yondu Udonta's. Nebula stood over the body until Garthan Saal arrived, remarking that the real cops were there now. Although Nebula felt bad, Saal said that a career criminal got what was coming to him, showing little remorse. Saal then directed his men to clean the crime scene up. Nebula got annoyed, sarcastically saying he already solved the case. A cold Saal turned to her and said that he did not need Black Order trash telling him how to do his job. Nebula simply said she was former Black Order and she earned her stars, same as him.[1]
Investigation[]
Nebula surveys the crime scene
- "Garthan Saal and his lackeys wasted their time hunting for the killer's weapon, when they really should have been looking for the victim's. Yondu and I had a past and some memories to go with it. Memories I could use."
- ―Nebula[src]
Not feeling well about the circumstances surrounding Yondu Udonta's death, Nebula decided to do her own investigating. She arrived back at the now cleaned up crime scene and displayed an old recording of Udonta talking to her, saying they made quite a team. During this recording, Udonta whitstled, which is exactly what Nebula wanted as it activated the Yaka Arrow, which was still present, stuck in some scaffolding.
Nebula finds the source codes
The arrow then moved and shot its way at her. Nebula caught it before it pierced her and then walked away with it obtained. However, the arrow suddenly turned green, confusing Nebula until she pressed the tip, unveiling a holographic sphere. Nebula realized that Udonta died protecting whatever the schematics were. When she got back into her vehicle, Nebula had the computer search all databases, but did not find a match. Suddenly, Nova Prime called her, which Nebula gladly answered.
Nebula switches to a secure line
Rael apologized for Udonta's death before asking Nebula to switch to a secure line. Once done, Rael explained that she believed there was a conspiracy looming to allow Ronan the Accuser into Xandar and that whatever Udonta had was a key to it. Rael tasked Nebula with finding out what was wrong and to use any means necessary. Nebula accepted, but was wary as using "any means necessary" went against Nova Corps oath.[1]
Meeting with Howard[]
Nebula asks for Howard the Duck's help
Nebula arrived at Howard's Casino and approached Korg at the bar. She asked if Howard the Duck was around and Korg pointed her upstairs, but warned that Howard might be mad if she pulled him out of a big win. Nebula followed the directions and walked to Howard's table. Howard grew annoyed and told everyone to leave as he talked to Nebula. The two friends watched the Yaka Arrow reveal the scematics once again as Howard grinned in glee at the sight.
Nebula listens to Korg
Nebula asked what it was, leading Howard to say that only a lunatic would know. Korg then arrived with drinks and looked up, casually saying the scematics were a Unit B-42 Mainframe Core. Korg said many things could be in the scematics including the source code for the Planetary Shield generator. Nebula then realized that was what the enemy wanted, to remove the shield and allow Ronan the Accuser in. Nebula decided she needed someone from the Xandarian Correctional Facility to help. Howard cautioned her against it.[1]
Breaking Out an Old Enemy[]
Yon-Rogg and Nebula argue
Nebula arrived at the Xandarian Correctional Facility and surrendered her weapons so she could see none other than Yon-Rogg. Entering his cell, Nebula wasted no time in breaking him out. She then defeated the security robot and the two made a run for it into the main area. Security pointed weapons at them, but Nebula had a backup plan. She used the robot's tablet to release the prisoners, causing a riot. The two then escaped through the commotion. Once in the ship, Nebula told Yon-Rogg he could not escape as she took all of the necessary precautions.[1]
Double Crossed[]
Nebula and Yon-Rogg in the vents
- "This was all a setup. Giving me the Yondu case, pointing me to the shield codes. All so you could start an invasion. You swore an oath to defend Xandar."
- ―Nebula to Irani Rael[src]
Arriving at the location of the Xandarian Mainframe Core, Nebula and Yon-Rogg broke through the vents and slid down the maintenance shaft only to stop abruptly. Nebula asked what was wrong and Yon-Rogg said there was exposed-live wire and they needed to get out. Luckily, they got to the chamber containing the core and Yon-Rogg played around with the lock until he got his work done. The place then started flooding as a precaution and the duo swam through a gate at the bottom. Once inside, the water drained.
Nebula accesses the source codes
Nebula walked over to the core and placed her hand on it, granting authentication. She then strapped the cables to her head in order to obtain the source codes so she could erase them. Once she accessed the core, Nebula put a twist on the codes just in case she was betrayed as she had a bad feeling about both Irani Rael and Yon-Rogg. Her feelings about Yon-Rogg were right as once she got the codes, Yon-Rogg stuck a flash drive in her head port, extracting the codes for himself and sending electrical waves through Nebula, rendering her immobile.
Yon-Rogg betrays Nebula
Yon-Rogg then swam away through the gate as water filled back up. Nebula was too late and had to find a different way. She was able to get to a vent and climbed in, making her way outside. Once out there, she woke up to Yon-Rogg and Irani Rael over her. Nebula was betrayed, but Rael talked to her about opening the gates to Ronan as sometimes there was no shame in surrender. She then explained that she needed the source codes to do so, but needed a cyborg to access them. That was why Nebula was recruited for the mission. As Rael walked away, she ordered Garthan Saal to kill her.
Nebula walks through rioters on the streets
Nebula tried to get up, but was assaulted by the Nova Corps. She was beat up, but was able to punch her way through. As the men shot at her, Nebula jumped off the facility, hundreds of feet to the ground. When she awoke, she was hanging over the ledge. Nebula slowly walked through the alleys, seeing the riots emerging as people grew tired of the Nova Corps. They cursed at Nebula, who made it to Howard's Casino.[1]
Forming a Team[]
Nebula equips the Yaka Arrow Controller
- "The people of Xandar are going to suffer."
"They'll drink more."
"Nova Prime will take your liquor license." - ―Nebula and Howard the Duck[src]
Nebula was immediately helped by Howard the Duck, Groot, Korg and Miek. She said she was okay, although circuits were exposed out of her head. She then tried to stand up and collapsed, unconscious. Nebula finally woke up and gathered the group as they needed to stop Irani Rael. In preparation, Nebula accessed Yondu's Yaka Arrow Controller.[1]
Super Nova[]
Nebula confronts her former allies
- "The codes. You double-crossed me."
"Triple-crossed, actually. I saw Yon-Rogg's move a mile away. So I put my little twist on the codes. You know, machine to machine." - ―Irani Rael and Nebula[src]
Nebula arrived at the Nova Corps Headquarters with her team and disposed of many guards using her Yaka Arrow. She then made her way to the main room where Irani Rael, Yon-Rogg, Garthan Saal and the Nova Corps stood. Rael quickly put in the access codes, opening the Planetary Shield for Ronan the Accuser. However, the shield started closing, destroying the Dark Aster and killing Ronan.
Nebula fights Nova Prime
Confused, Rael asked what Nebula did. Nebula said she saw the betrayal coming and even though it did not hurt less when it happened, she put a twist on the codes, allowing it to close. Rael then ordered the men to kill everyone. Nebula chased after Rael and shot her arrow at the elevator, missing Rael and getting it stuck with her. Nebula got to Rael a different way, who had snapped the arrow in half, deeming it useless. Nebula found Rael flying away in a Star Blaster and managed to jump on, hanging onto the side. Rael tried to knock Nebula off, causing them to crash.
Nebula looks over a bright Xandar
Nebula got to her feet and found Rael hanging over the side of the building. Nebula offered a hand as she still thought she owed Rael. However, Nova Prime took out her blaster and shot as Nebula. This shot missed her target, causing her to lose her grip and fall to her death. Nebula then looked up as she watched the sun shine over Xandar and the shield opened, leaving no more threats to Xandar and an escape from the dark days. Howard the Duck approached Nebula, naming her Super Nova.[1]
Nova Prime[]
Interdimensional Attack[]
Having become the new Nova Prime following her defeat of Ronan and Irani Rael, Nebula led the defense of Xandar against the Champion of Hydra with the help of Korg and Groot. However, the Nova Corps was no match for the creature, forcing Nebula to order an evacuation of the planet. Korg informed Nebula that they couldn't because the creature had torn apart the jump points. Captain Carter arrived to help with the Guardians of the Multiverse and they were able to slay the creature before shards of the Observational Plane fell from the sky, revealing that Watcher was in trouble.[2]

Behind the Scenes[]
- Nebula was one of the heroes in the second season of What If...? which A.C. Bradley cited as being written to give her and others hope during the COVID-19 pandemic and rising political tensions due to the George Floyd protests and the then-upcoming 2020 United States presidential election.[3]
- Nebula was created as a chance to tell a story with a Nebula who was closer in personality to her main universe counterpart than the version that appeared in What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?[4]
