Project Distant Star Return

"NASA was always curious about the Monolith."
Will Daniels[src]

In 2001, Gideon Malick was consulting for NASA. He advised to use the Monolith to travel to the Maveth, a planet on the other side of the portal.[2] Jane Thompson and Luther Banks assisted him in the project.[3] NASA sent an astronaut, Will Daniels, and three scientists, Taylor, Brubaker, and Austin, through the portal to survey the planet on until a rescue team could come to retrieve them. However, the three scientists were killed by something Daniels called "It". The portal was never reopened and Daniels was alone on Maveth. [4] That expedition was secretly orchestrated by a HYDRA cell led by Malick who was trying to bring the thing, Hive, back to Earth.[2] The facility of the project was eventually abandoned.[3]
