―Mysterio to his Crew[src]

Quentin Beck was a former Stark Industries employee who sought to replace the late Tony Stark as Earth's next defender. Beck staged several Elemental crises across the world with the use of his drones and hologram technology, seeking attention and recognition from the public as a new superhero named Mysterio.

Beck exploited traits of charisma and his skills in illusions and trickery to gain the trust of "Nick Fury" and Spider-Man, even filling the void of a mentor figure for him in Stark's absence. After his fraudulence was uncovered, and his plan to continue his destructive rampage across the continent of Europe was revealed, Beck had proven himself to be a worthy adversary to Spider-Man, although his callousness and arrogance also proved to be his downfall. Beck died from a misfired drone gunshot. Nevertheless, Beck was instrumental in exposing Spider-Man's identity to the world, as he sent modified footage of the Battle of London to several news outlets, framing Spider-Man for the attacks.

Biography

Early Life

Working for Stark Industries

"The holographic system I designed, a revolutionary breakthrough with limitless applications, which Tony turned into a self-therapy machine and renamed "B.A.R.F." He renamed my life's work B.A.R.F., then he fired me, saying I was unstable."
―Quentin Beck[src]

Quentin Beck was employed by Stark Industries, where he began working as an engineer. Beck was assisting in the inventing of the Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing prototype during his employment. However, he felt unrecognized as an inventor from Tony Stark, and the callousness he developed out of his need for attention prompted Stark to fire him. In 2023, after Stark's death in the Battle of Earth,[2] the embittered Beck took it upon himself to seize the opportunity to become the world's next renowned superhero.[3]

Becoming Mysterio

Using his uncanny skills in trickery and illusion, Beck created a falsified narrative that he was a tragic warrior from the alternate reality Earth-833, fighting entities known as the Elementals. He formulated a plan to launch drone attacks disguised as natural disasters across the world, and used projections to disguise the attacks as the Elementals. Beck had also rallied disgraced members of Stark Industries who had similar motivations towards Stark, including William Ginter Riva, Victoria Snow, Guterman and Janice Lincoln. Furthermore, he developed a decorative and well made armour which made it appear as if it enabled him to control his abilities, as well as his holograms incuding a holographic version of himself in full armour, making his superpowers seem real.[3]

With his transformation into Mysterio, Beck used the Elementals to attack Mexico and Morocco, resulting the attention of Nick Fury and Maria Hill. After a battle with Sandman and seemigly destroying the elemental, Beck revealed himself to Fury and Hill and shared his false story with them, manipulating them wisely enough into believing it. Sometime after this, he set Cyclone on Morocco and fought the air elemental, another battle that he won.[3]

Mysterio arrives to fight the Water Elemental

After the incident in Morocco, Beck unleashed the water elemental known as Hydro-Man at Venice, Italy. During the event, Beck arrived at the scene as Mysterio flying down from the sky and fighting Hydro-Man, however both himself and Hydro-Man were seemigly all part of his elaborate illusions. Peter Parker, who was on a school feild trip across Europe and was also in Venice at the time attempted to help, and working with Mysterio, lured Hydro-Man away from the inhabited bridge and out of the water, which allowed Mysterio to defeat it, destoying the third elemental. Mysterio then flew off into the sky, much to the awe of Peter's classmates, who had watched the fight. They later debated about the mysterious hero, who they named Mysterio.[3]

Right after the Venice battle, 'Nick Fury' arrived in Parker's hotel and took him to a hidden base where Mysterio was working alongside them. Beck greeted Parker, and told him his false narrative and charisma to manipulate the teen, causing him to believe in the existence of the Multiverse and fabricating his the story of his Earths destruction by the hands of the final elemental, saying that he had lost his family to it as well.

Beck later stated he knows when the next Elemental attack would happen and where, resulting 'Fury' attempting to recruit Parker into helping Beck against the Elementals. Although Peter turned it down due to not wanting the world to know his identity, 'Fury' hijacked school trip, sending them to Prague so Peter coUld be there to help, something Beck referred to as kidnapping the boy .[3]

A day later, Beck met up with Parker, Fury and Maria Hill, waiting for the final elemental attack. When Parker had doubts about his participation in the mission, Beck comforted him, and Peter trusted him. Beck then unleashed the fire Elemental, known as Molten Man, in order to attack Prague, which then led to him and Spider-Man, who called himself 'Night Monkey' to avoid suspicion, fighting Molten-Man. Beck made up that Molten Man could draw power from the Earths core by growing larger from metal.

Mysterio vs

Mysterio continues to attack the Fire Elemental

During the battle, Beck failed to notice Peter accidentally hit one of his Drones, causing it to loose a projector, which was then stolen by MJ. Mysterio seemingly attempted to sacorfice himself to stop Molten Man, flying into the elemental and destroying it. After the battle, Parker checked on Mysterio, and Nick Fury and Maria Hill arrived at the scene, Fury requesting Beck come to a meeting in Berlin, so he can stay on Earth and help fight future threats. Beck, wanting to keep up his deception, agreed, and then asked Peter if he wanted to get drinks, which the teen eventually agreed to. [3]

Deception Revealed

Gaining the E.D.I.T.H. Glasses

Quentin Beck (Far From Home)

"See? That wasn't so hard. Somebody get this stupid costume off me!"
―Quentin Beck to his Crew[src]

Parker and Beck got drinks at a bar, which was secretly also an illusion, created to give the perfect atmosphere for Parker to be open towards Mysterio, in hopes he would hand over the E.D.I.T.H. glasses which he had accidently dropped. The pair talked for a bit, Peter confessing his love for MJ, and his plan to tell her his feelings atop the Eiffel Tower. Trusting Beck completely, Peter offered the glasses to Beck, thinking he should be the next Iron Man. Beck acted like he wanted to turn it down, but accepted the 'honor' nonetheless.

But after Peter left the bar, Beck disabled the illusion set up there, revealing the other attendees at the bar to be his team, who cheered after Beck joked that getting E.D.I.T.H was easy. They the next went outside, Beck giving the glasses to his team to link to his system to gain masses of drones. Beck gave out toasts to each of his teammates, thanking them and celebrating their roles in the first step to his victory.[3]

Tormenting Spider-Man

"You are just a scared little kid in a sweatsuit. I created Mysterio to give the world someone to believe in. I control the truth... Mysterio is the truth!"
―Mysterio to Spider-Man[src]

That night, Peter and MJ ended up activating the projector the latter stole, and discovered Beck's deception. Beck quickly found out about the miising projector during a rehearsal for his next planned battle, wanting to create an 'Avengers-level threat'. Furious that his plan could be compromised, he threatened his team at gun point before using E.D.I.T.H to discover that both Peter Parker and MJ knew. Beck was once again enraged, informing William Riva that once he had to kill Parker, The blamed would be on him. Beck then went to Berlin.

Before Parker and Fury arrived, he set up the destination building as yet another illusion, and after shooting Fury with one of his Drones, trapped Parker in an elaborate maze of illusion, attempting to break him with them, showing him horrific visions, such as Mysertio in full armour dropping MJ from the top of the Eiffel Tower, and a zombie Iron Man crawling with spiders attacking Peter. However, the illusions suddenly cut out, as Beck, wearing a Mo-Cap suit, was shot in the back by Nick Fury. Peter told Fury the other people who knew about Beck's real plan, only for the Fury present to be another illusion, and Beck told Peter that now his friends has to die too. Before Parker could react, he was hit and swept away by a train, as Mysterio had E.D.I.T.H alter Parker's school trip to London.[3]

Battle of London

"How could you do all of this?"
"You'll see, Peter. People... need to believe. And nowadays, they'll believe anything."
Spider-Man and Mysterio[src]

Beck then went to London, capital of United Kingdom and England with the Mysterio persona and then created his largest illusion yet: the Elemental Fusion in order to attack the city and cause maximum damage, to insure he will forever be seen as a hero to the world, and to use his technology in order to make sure that his plan would surely happen. He then communicated with his ally Guterman, who was posing as a London Bus Driver, and instructed him to move the bus holding Peter Parker's classmates into a suitable 'kill zone' so the Drones that made the Fusion could kill them. However, the class escaped, and Beck to manually sent drones to kill his 'loose ends', Nick Fury and Maria Hill. Beck then staged the fight between the hologram of Mysterio and the Elemental Fusion. However, Spider-Man arrived to stop his plans, going inside the Fusion illsuions, and destroying dromes insidie, which Beck soon took notice to, as the massive illusion fell apart, revealing the Drones to the world. Beck sent all the active drones to kill Spider-Man, leading to a long battle in the city.

Furious with the failure of his plan, Beck attempted to hunt down and kill Ned Leeds, Michelle Jones, Betty Brant, Flash Thompson and Happy Hogan, the other people who were aware of his plan, by manually controlling one of the armed drones, trapping them in the Tower of London. After finding Jones, Betty distracted Beck's drone, giving Jones the time to destroy it with a mace, angering Beck even more.

Following the destruction of the Fusion illusion, Beck was ambushed by Spider-Man in the Tower Bridge. Beck, now furious and motivated to murder Spider-Man, arrogantly challenged Spider-Man to a fight for the E.D.I.T.H. glasses, sending a last swarm of armed drones after him. Even after learning from William Ginter Riva that he was in the crossfire of the drones, Beck still ordered the attack, which would later prove to be his defeat, as Spider-Man spiraled an active firing drone at Beck, which shot him in the abdomen.

Even after being shot, the mortally wounded Beck attempted to kill Spider-Man one last time after revealing himself to be simply another illusion. Spider-Man subdues Beck yet again, and reclaims the E.D.I.T.H. glasses. Beck drops down, and claims ominously that "people need to believe" and that they'll "believe anything", before apparently succumbing to his wounds, as Spider-Man looks on.[3]

Exposing Spider-Man's Identity

"I managed to send the Elemental back into the dimensional rift but I don't think I'm gonna make it off this bridge alive. Spider-Man attacked me for some reason. He has an army of weaponized drones, Stark technology. He's saying he's the only one who's gonna be the new Iron Man, no one else. Spider-Man's real– Spider-Man's real name is– Spider-Man's name is Peter Parker!"
―Mysterio[src]

Despite his great defeat, Beck's fate is unknown, as shortly prior to his assumed death, he took advantage of his being subdued from Spider-Man in order to release altered filmed footage of the London battle, implicating Spider-Man as the ringleader of the attacks. Upon Peter's return to New York City, the footage was already sent to various news outlets in the city, including New York One and The Daily Bugle, exposing Peter's alter-ego as Spider-Man to the world.[3]

Personality

"You guys do have sarcasm on this Earth, right?. I like you, Peter, you're a good kid. There's a part of me that wants me to tell you to just turn around and run away from all of this and then there's another part of me which knows what we're about to fight and what's in stake. Saving the world requires sacrifice."
―Mysterio to Spider-Man[src]

During his days as an employee at Stark Industries, Quentin Beck had always shown a glorious desire and hunger for using his uncanny skills of technology in order to work with Tony Stark. He designed and invented the B.A.R.F. prototype, but after Stark noticed his callous and unstable nature, Beck was fired, leaving him embittered. Beck later witnessed his former employer die in the Battle of Earth, seizing the advantage in order to use his skills to create advanced drones which project forms of elemental creatures and an advanced suit of armor with a helmet to shield his identity. He decided to use the Elementals to cause massive destruction across the continent of Europe and defeat them himself, later being seen as a great hero in the eyes of the wide public.

This plan would succeed, with people such as Flash Thompson giving him praise. Brad Davis states that Beck is similar to Thor and Iron Man together, implying how powerful he truly is without knowing the issue would require the attention of Spider-Man, "Nick Fury" and "Maria Hill". Beck manipulated the three by stating he is from another Earth, as well as the Elementals, presenting himself as an expert on them and that they are entities from his dimension, all as a move to advance his plan.

While portraying as a superhero, Beck would display a selfless behavior, appearing to risk his life to protect innocents and allies. Beck would also become somewhat of a father figure to Peter, showing sympathy to his concerns and advising Peter to think about what he wants, rather than just following other people's expectations. This led Peter to look up to Beck, and made him trust Beck enough to give him control of E.D.I.T.H.

However, beneath Beck's superhero guise lies an egotistical man who would stop at nothing to get what he wants. While Beck may show some camaraderie to his crew that helped him become Mysterio, Beck would not hesitate to threaten their lives if they made even a small mistake. Beck also doesn't care about civilian casualties caused by his performances, citing that more deaths would mean more publicity for Mysterio. Another example of Beck's ruthlessness is when Peter found out about his secret and told his friends, Beck actively seeks to kill them to prevent them from exposing him. Despite his apparent care for Peter, Beck caused and coldly watched as Peter was hit by a speeding train in Berlin, and was willing to kill him and allhis school freinds, despite them being children, to insure his plan is not exposed. Beck showed a horrific and sadistic side when creating illusions during his first fight with Peter, showing him choking MJ and throwing her from the Eiffel Tower, a twisted version of the plan Parker had with her.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

"He's like Iron Man and Thor rolled into one."
Brad Davis[src]
  • Hologram Projection: Beck had access to a wide range of advanced realistic holographic projectors controlled by Riva's drones, which he used to make illusions of the Elemental attacks, and him stopping them. With the drones, he could cause real damage, and real casualties, which made the public believe that the Illusions were real. Beck's Holograms extended to showing an extension of himself as Mysterio as well, the entire battle between him and the Elementals being pre-made before being unleashed on the public.

Abilities

  • Genius-Level Intellect: Quentin Beck is a genius, his intellect on par with Tony Stark and his eventual protege, Peter Parker. Beck was a principal developer of the technology that would later be appropriated by Stark, who rejected his views on how the technology should be utilized and instead used it as the framework for what he would call B.A.R.F.. Beck displays his technical skills in the development of illusions and skillful applications of advanced drones, skills so refined that they are even capable of fooling intergalactic beings such as Talos and Soren, as well as the majority of the public who witness his acts of "heroism." Beck also masterminded his entire plan, which came close to succeeding, and in a way did, as after exposing Spider Man, the public believed that he was the real hero.
  • Master Scientist: To be added
  • Master Engineer: To be added
  • Master Actor: Beck's narcissistic mentality and attention to detail make him a brilliant thespian. He showed genuine concern for Parker struggling to balance his normal and hero lives, even winning him over to make Parker chose to give up E.D.I.T.H. voluntarily. However, he is not creative enough to mastermind a narrative such as being a superhero from another reality fighting elemental entities. He instead had a member of his team, Guterman, devise the story of "Mysterio" and how to convey authenticity to his words so as make his deceptions believed, even by "Nick Fury" and "Maria Hill". His attention to detail also made him the "director" of the pre-render of every Elemental attack so the battle path and damage caused would seem real. A drawback to this are extreme reactions to unintended mistakes, such as threatening his entire crew with drones guns trained on their heads after learning of Jones' taking of evidence which Riva overlooked as minor damage.
  • Master Tactician: Beck's adaptability in tense situations allows him to adjust the spin of the story on the fly. This is most evident when Beck made Parker believe Fury saved him, only to effortless coerce information of who else could know of Beck's deception. Even as Spider-Man revealed his illusions, Beck turned the story of his reported death into martyrdom by having Riva edit the London footage to make it seem as though Parker commanded the drone attack and killed Beck, just to turn Spider-Man into a public enemy.

Trivia

  • In the comics, Quentin Beck was a visual effects artist who wanted to make a name for himself in the film industry. Due to lack of recognition, Beck realized that his expertise in illusions could make him an effective supervillain, choosing his identity of Mysterio. Beck was also a member of the original Sinister Six, a group of supervillains that are united to fight Spider-Man.
