"I created Mysterio to give the world someone to believe in. I control the truth... Mysterio is the truth!"
―Mysterio[src]

Quentin Beck is a former Stark Industries employee who sought out to replace the late Tony Stark as Earth's next defender. Seeking to solidify a reputation for himself, Beck feigned several Elemental attacks across the world with the use of his drones, seeking attention and recognition from the public as a new superhero named Mysterio.

Beck exploited traits of charisma and his skills in illusions and trickery to gain the trust of "Nick Fury" and Spider-Man, even filling the void of a mentor figure for him in Stark's absence. After his fraudulence was uncovered, and his plan to continue his destructive rampage across the continent of Europe was revealed, Beck had proven himself to be a worthy adversary to Spider-Man, although his callousness and arrogance also proved to be his downfall. Nevertheless, Beck was instrumental in exposing Spider-Man's identity to the world, as he sent modified footage of the Battle of London to several news outlets, framing Spider-Man for the attacks.

Biography

Early Life

Working for Stark Industries

Quentin Beck was employed by Stark Industries, where he began working as an engineer. Beck was assisting in the inventing of the Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing prototype during his employment. However, he felt unrecognized as an inventor from Tony Stark, and the callousness he developed out of his need for attention prompted Stark to fire him. In 2023, after Stark's death in the Battle of Earth,[2] the embittered Beck took it upon himself to seize the opportunity to become the world's next renowned superhero.[3]

Becoming Mysterio

Using his uncanny skills in trickery and illusion, Beck created a falsified narrative that he was a tragic warrior from the alternate reality Earth-833, fighting entities known as the Elementals. He formulated a plan to launch drone attacks disguised as natural disasters across the world, and used projections to disguise the attacks as the Elementals. Beck had also rallied disgraced members of Stark Industries who had similar motivations towards Stark, including William Ginter Riva, Victoria, Guterman and Janice. Furthermore, he developed an armor which made it appear as if it enabled him to control his abilities.[3]

After the incident in Morocco, Beck unleashed the water elemental known as Hydro-Man at Venice, Italy, attracting the attention of Peter Parker or rather Spider-Man. During the event, Beck arrived at the scene as Mysterio and defeated it, eventually outsmarting Parker as well into believing his story.[3]

Right after the Venice battle, Beck used his false story to manipulate Parker, causing him to believe in the existence of the Multiverse. Beck later stated he knows when the next Elemental attack would happen and where, resulting Fury recruiting Parker into helping Beck against the Elementals.[3]

Deception Revealed

Battle of London

"The truth will come out... people will believe anything they hear..."
―Mysterio to Spider-Man[src]

Beck then went to London, capital of United Kingdom and England with the Mysterio persona and with the Elemental Fusion in order to attack the city and to use his technology in order to make sure that his plan would surely happen. However, Spider-Man arrived to defy against them, leading to a long battle in the city.

In the midst of the chaotic battle, Beck used his illusions technology and created an illusion to combat Parker, but with the help of E.D.I.T.H., he destroyed these drones and later found the Elementals' weakest point, using it in order to destroy the Fusion completely.

Furious with the failure of his plan, Beck attempted to hunt down and kill Ned Leeds, Michelle Jones, Betty Brant, Flash Thompson and Happy Hogan by manually controlling one of the armed drones, trapping them in the Tower of London. After finding Jones, Betty distracts Beck's drone, giving Jones the time to destroy it.

Following the destruction of the Fusion illusion, Beck was ambushed by Spider-Man in the Tower Bridge. Beck, now furious and motivated to murder Spider-Man, arrogantly challenged Spider-Man to a fight for the E.D.I.T.H. glasses, sending a last swarm of armed drones after him. Even after learning from William Ginter Riva that he was in the crossfire of the drones, Beck still ordered the attack, which would later prove to be his defeat, as Spider-Man spiraled an active firing drone at Beck, which shot him in the abdomen.

Even after being shot, the mortally wounded Beck attempted to kill Spider-Man one last time after revealing himself to be simply another illusion. Spider-Man subdues Beck yet again, and reclaims the E.D.I.T.H. glasses. Beck drops down, and claims ominously that "people would believe anything they hear", before apparently succumbing to his wounds.[3]

Exposing Spider-Man's Identity

"I managed to send the Elemental back into the dimensional rift but I don't think I'm gonna make it off this bridge alive. Spider-Man attacked me for some reason. He has an army of weaponized drones, Stark technology. He's saying he's the only one who's gonna be the new Iron Man, no one else. Spider-Man's real... Spider-Man's real name is-- Spider-Man's real name is Peter Parker!"
―Mysterio[src]

Despite his great defeat, Beck's fate is unknown, as shortly prior to his assumed death, he took advantage of his being subdued from Spider-Man in order to release altered filmed footage of the London battle, implicating Spider-Man as the ringleader of the attacks. Upon Peter's return to New York City, the footage was already sent to various news outlets in the city, including New York One and The Daily Bugle, exposing Peter's alter-ego as Spider-Man to the world.[3] Beck's fate is unclear, as he is a master illusionist it could be that he used practical means to fake his death, or the gunshot he received really did fatally wound him.

Personality

"You guys do have sarcasm on this Earth, right?. I like you, Peter, you're a good kid. There's a part of me that wants me to tell you to just turn around and run away from all of this and then there's another part of me which knows what we're about to fight and what's in stake. Saving the world requires sacrifice."
―Mysterio to Spider-Man[src]

During his days as an employee at Stark Industries, Quentin Beck had always shown a glorious desire and hunger for using his uncanny skills of technology in order to work with Tony Stark. He designed and invented the B.A.R.F. prototype, but after Stark noticed his callous and unstable nature, Beck was fired, leaving him embittered. Beck later witnessed his former employer die in the Battle of Earth, seizing the advantage in order to use his skills to create advanced drones which project forms of elemental creatures and an advanced suit of armor with a helmet to shield his identity. He decided to use the Elementals to cause massive destruction across the continent of Europe and defeat them himself, later being seen as a great hero in the eyes of the wide public.

This plan would succeed, with people such as Flash Thompson giving him praise. Brad Davis states that Beck is similar to Thor and Iron Man together, implying how powerful he truly is without knowing the issue would require the attention of Spider-Man, "Nick Fury" and "Maria Hill". Beck manipulated the three by stating he is from another Earth, as well as the Elementals, presenting himself as an expert on them and that they are entities from his dimension, all as a move to advance his plan.

While portraying as a superhero, Beck would display a selfless behavior, appearing to risk his life to protect innocents and allies. Beck would also become somewhat of a father figure to Peter, showing sympathy to his concerns and advising Peter to think about what he wants, rather than just following other people's expectations.

However, beneath Beck's superhero guise lies an egotistical man who would stop at nothing to get what he wants. While Beck may show some camaraderie to his crew that helped him become Mysterio, Beck would not hesitate to threaten their lives if they made even a small mistake. Beck also doesn't care about civilian casualties caused by his performances, citing that more deaths would mean more publicity for Mysterio. Another example of Beck's ruthlessness is when Peter found out about his secret and told his friends, Beck actively seeks to kill them to prevent them from exposing him.

Trivia

  • In the comics, Quentin Beck was a visual effects artist who wanted to make a name for himself in the film industry.
