The Murder of Rapu was the result of Gorr renouncing his god Rapu after the death of his daughter, as well as the latter's carelessness and self-indulgence and mockery to his suffering, following a devastating drought on his home planet.
Background[]
As his planet was dying, Gorr and his daughter were among the last survivors, suffering from starvation and dehydration. Gorr prayed their god, Rapu to provide them with water and sustenance, but his prayers unfortunately fell on deaf ears. As his daughter was getting worse, Gorr kept praying and told her that Rapu would not abandon his worshippers and there would be food and water for them soon. Gorr's daughter passed away shortly after, so Gorr was left all alone to mourn for her, until he heard a mysterious voice calling for him. He walked through the deserted lands of his planet, following the voice, and suddenly found a lavish green oasis.[2]
Murder[]
Gorr immediately ran forward to the oasis, indulging and water and fruits he was so desperate, before he witnessed Rapu in the flesh, right in front of him. Gorr fell to his knees and told his god that all his other disciples are dead and their and their land became a desert, but he still kept a hope that his devotion to Rapu would be rewarded. Rapu only laughed that Gorr was naive enough to expect any sort of reward, telling him that he was celebrating himself for vanquishing the Dark Shadow Lord who threatened Rapu's entire empire with the All-Black the Necrosword. Gorr said that his empire already ended, as there was no one to worship his god, but Rapu brushed him off as he knew that there would be new worshippers in the future regardless.
Gorr becomes the God Butcher
Gorr was shocked at Rapu's attitude, saying that his daughter and his people suffered and died while believing in him, to which Rapu said that serving gods was their only purpose. Gorr tore off his medallion and renounced Rapu, to which he grabbed Gorr by his throat in rage, proclaiming that the only meaning his life could have is dying by his hand. Suffocating in Rapu's grip, Gorr heard the sword calling for him, urging him to seek the Eternity and get his revenge against gods that abandoned him. Gorr felt the sword in his hand and stabbed Rapu, who became horrified that it chose Gorr to brandish its curse. Gorr only proclaimed his vow to kill all gods before slaying Rapu by cutting his head off with the Necrosword.[2]
Aftermath[]
Now wielding the All-Black the Necrosword, Gorr became the God Butcher, using the sword to slay every god he could reach, which earned him a fearsome reputation. However, Gorr's true goal was to find a way to summon the Bifrost Bridge and reach the Eternity, so he could make a wish to bring about the extinction of all gods in existence. He launched an attack on New Asgard, targeting Thor and trying to steal his Stormbreaker, but faced the opposition from the Asgardian forces, Valkyrie and Mighty Thor as well. Gorr was forced to retreat, however, he was able to capture numerous children and take them to the Shadow Realm, knowing that Thor would follow him to save them.[2]
