- "I found my daddy with panther claws in his chest! You ain't the son of a king, you the son of a murderer!"
- ―Erik Killmonger to T'Challa[src]
The Murder of N'Jobu was the result of an attempt by T'Chaka to arrest his brother N'Jobu for revealing Wakanda's existence to Ulysses Klaue.
Background[]
In the 1980s, Prince N'Jobu of Wakanda was sent on a War Dogs assignment to Oakland, California. It was during his time there that he fell in love with an American woman, settled down, and had a son named Erik Stevens, to whom he bestowed the Wakandan name N'Jadaka.
As time passed, N'Jobu began to witness people of African descent being subjected to constant persecution and became disillusioned with Wakanda's isolationist policies. He then decided to steal a cache of vibranium from his people and stage a global uprising that would bring an end to the oppression.
To accomplish this, he betrayed Wakanda's existence to arms dealer Ulysses Klaue, who later infiltrated the country, stole the cache and set off a bomb that killed several Wakandan citizens.
Unbeknownst to N'Jobu, his brother T'Chaka learned about the plot from his confidant Zuri, who had previously been tasked with disguising himself as an American citizen named James and working alongside N'Jobu.[1]
Murder[]
T'Chaka and two Dora Milaje went to Oakland to confront N'Jobu. T'Chaka had a brief conversation with N'Jobu, also revealing that Zuri had been sent as spy. He ordered N'Jobu to return to Wakanda and face judgement. But as he turned his back, an enraged N'Jobu lashed out on Zuri, pulling out his gun. Before he could kill Zuri, T'Chaka killed his own brother, stabbing him with his claws.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "He killed his own brother... and left a child behind... with nothing. What kind of king... What kind of man does that?"
"No man is perfect. Not even your father."
"He didn't even give him a proper burial. My uncle N'Jobu betrayed us, but my father... he may have created something even worse." - ―T'Challa and Nakia[src]
T'Chaka ordered Zuri and the two Dora Milaje that they were not to speak of the incident, and returned to Wakanda, electing to leave N'Jobu's son N'Jadaka behind in order to maintain an established lie that N'Jobu had simply abandoned his duties and fled.
That night, N'Jadaka held his father's body and cried, before recovering his father's diary and ring. Several years later, N'Jadaka, as Erik Stevens, joined the United States Navy SEALs and was dubbed Killmonger. He struck a deal with Ulysses Klaue but later killed him and brought his body to Wakanda.
He then said to T'Challa that he wanted to be King of Wakanda, and revealed his true identity. Killmonger then challenged T'Challa to a duel, one which T'Challa accepted. In the duel, T'Challa was defeated and presumed dead, Zuri was killed and Killmonger became the King. As per tradition, Killmonger underwent the ritual of the Heart-Shaped Herb and traveled to the Ancestral Plane, where N'Jobu's spirit had been residing ever since his death. There, N'Jadaka conversed with his father one last time.[1]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The Assassination of N'Jobu was in and out of the script for Black Panther for a while, but Ryan Coogler finally decided it should be in the movie definitely.[3]
