Moon Knight Title Card

A list of trivia related to Moon Knight.

References to Marvel Cinematic Universe[]

  • In November 2019, Feige stated that after introducing Moon Knight in the series, the character will cross over to the MCU films.[1]
    • Diab stated in March 2022 that he felt the character would be part of the MCU for the next ten years, and expressed his hope that Moon Knight would eventually get his own feature film. Isaac is not contractually obligated to return as the character in future projects.[2]
  • On March 4, 2022, Jeremy Slater, when asked about what lies ahead for the character, Slater then responded with some sentiments that may get some fans excited stating: "The honest answer is I don’t know. Because [Marvel boss] Kevin Feige is the guy who decides all that stuff. Look, if it was up to me, he would be part of the Avengers. It’s absolutely not up to me, but I think that is the goal!"[3]
  • In February 2021, Feige said some of Marvel's series, including Moon Knight and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, were being developed with the potential to have additional seasons made, in contrast to series like WandaVision (2021), which were developed as limited events that lead into feature films instead.[4] A year later, Isaac referred to Moon Knight as a limited series, while Diab was unsure whether the series would continue.[5][6] [7]
  • On April 11, 2022, Simu Liu, who led Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings took to social media to criticize the pronunciation in Disney+ series Moon Knight by Ethan Hawke's Arthur Harrow as what was said was not mandarin or chinese on screen; just gibberish.[8]
  • On April 17, 2022, In Moon Knight episode 3, Marc Spector and the moon god Khonshu summoned the Ennead Council members to accuse Arthur Harrow of a conspiracy to resurrect Ammit. Before the trial, Marc met with Yatzil, the avatar for the goddess of love and music, Hathor. It was revealed that before the Egyptian gods banished Khonshu in Moon Knight, Khonshu enjoyed Hathor's melodies and friendship. But audiences may have missed that Hathor was already mentioned in the MCU, dating back to Captain America: Civil War. After King T'Chaka died, Black Panther mentions the Egyptian goddess, but by a different name. In the comics, Hathor was also known as Sekhmet. T'Challa says, "In my culture, death is not the end. It's more of a stepping-off point. You reach out with both hands, and Bast and Sekhmet, they lead you into a green veld where... you can run forever."[9]

References to Marvel Comics[]

  • On March 2, 2022 a new Korean poster for Disney+'s Moon Knight gives MCU fans a detailed look at Oscar Isaac's titular vigilante costume. The new poster features Moon Knight standing menacingly against the full moon, while New York City can be seen far away in the background. The character holds blades shaped like crescent moons, which is the main symbol representing the hero in comic books. The image also allows fans to see how the series took inspiration in Egyptian culture to develop the live-action version of Moon Knight's uniform, which mimics the bandages used by mummies in funerary rites.[10]
  • On March 21, 2022, it was revealed that the choice to play Steven Grant, one of Moon Knight’s alter-egos, as a nervous Brit with an unusual accent came entirely from Isaac himself. “It wasn’t necessarily written that way at all,” Isaac admits in an interview with Radio Times. But when the actor took the idea to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, he got an enthusiastic green light.[11]
    • For comic fans, Isaac’s performance changes more than Steven Grant’s voice. One of four personalities vying for control in the mind of former mercenary Marc Spector, Steven Grant is a suave American millionaire in the mold of Bruce Wayne. In fact, up through the early 90's, Steven Grant was Moon Knight’s primary secret identity.[11]
    • Based on the few glimpses, Isaac plays Grant not as a debonair member of the upper crust, but as a timid antique dealer. But that creative freedom was crucial to getting such a high-profile actor to join the series. “I had just kinda got out of the whole, you know, big machinery of Star Wars,” Isaac said of his first reaction when Marvel offered him the role. But after adopting the voice and trying it out for his family, Isaac found himself hooked. “I couldn’t help but feel that there was this opportunity there.”[11]
    • Also markedly different is Ethan Hawke’s evil cult leader Arthur Harrow. Comic book Harrow is a typical mad scientist, complete with unholy experiments and connections to Nazis. Of course, Hawke had much more leeway to reinvent his character, as Harrow has appeared in only one issue: 1985’s Moon Knight #2.[11]
  • On April 10, 2022, Summon the Suit ends with the titular hero swigging a bottle of booze in a Cairo hostel, which has led fans to speculate that Jake Lockley will be making an appearance. There are some subtle clues within the first two episodes that potentially indicate Lockley has been around the whole time as well. In the comics, Jake Lockley is the third persona of Moon Knight/Marc Spector and is the rough and tough cabbie that acts as the intel gatherer for many of Moon Knight's missions. In comparison to Marc and Steven, Jake is much gritter and less honor-bound since he is the connection Moon Knight needs to the criminal underworld. In the comics, Lockley creates a network of spies and informants to help Moon Knight keep the upper hand over his enemies and rogues gallery. As for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jake could possibly be the one that has been living moments of Steven's life and not Marc.[12]
  • On April 14, 2022, Madripoor was referenced on the show, which was last seen in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.[13]
  • On April 18, 2022, n the series' third episode "The Friendly Type," Marc Spector, aka Moon Knight, finds himself in Cairo fighting an unnamed follower of Arthur Harrow, cult leader and avatar of the Egyptian god Ammit. The back of the young thug's jacket shows a likeness reminiscent of Pharaoh Rama-Tut -- an identity at one time adopted in the comics by the time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror, who will be appearing in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. But previously appeared as He Who Remains on the series Loki.[14]
  • On May 2, 2022, it was revealed that Moon Knight was originally going to have Echo as the love interest and Bushman as the villain according to the head writer.[15]
  • On May 4, 2022 Cinematographer Gregory Middleton explained how the team filmed the shot in the bingo room so that Jake is always lurking, but never fully seen in the shot. They intentionally stretched everything out to make the reveal linger ahead of its actual debut... Isaac even added his own flair to that part of the role, wanting to do more than "pay service to some idea" that originally came from the comics. The actor thought that his one speaking line as the Jake identity should be spoken in Spanish just to tease "the kind of control that he has".[16]
  • On May 5, 2022, showrunner Mohamed Diab revealed that there were not one, but two crossovers with other parts of the MCU cut from the series.[17]
  • On May 6, 2022, Grant Curtis addressed rumors that the Alexander the Great inclusion in the series was an allusion to a version of Kang the Conqueror.[18]

He felt that the movie was clearly meant to be set in his own country, even though he admitted that it's "not a full mistake" since it's based on something not set in Egypt in the comics...[25]
  • On March 21, 2022, Isaac mentioned to Fandom that he wanted to be Apocalypse or Wolverine growing up 'Because Wolverine's short... and he is short...[26]

Specifically referencing when Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor head to Egypt, a storyline that provides the fodder for the film's second major action sequence. The film was criticized for its depiction of Middle Eastern stereotypes. "You never see Cairo. You always see Jordan shot for Cairo, Morocco shot for Cairo, sometimes Spain shot for Cairo. This really angers us," Diab says. "I remember seeing Wonder Woman 1984 and there was a big sequence in Egypt and it was a disgrace for us. You had a sheik – that doesn’t make any sense to us. Egypt looked like a country from the Middle Ages. It looked like the desert."[27]

I think it was [Moon Knight Head Writer] Jeremy Slater whose original pitch found the way to use D.I.D. as a central part of his character that also is a visual narrative device, because it’s very difficult to present it. And I would say almost every conversation since then, in some way, especially with Oscar involved, was how this then reflects back on his psyche.”[30]
  • On March 31, 2022, Isaac praised Hawke's decision to bring his all to the role as well. Whereas Hawke revealed he was impressed with Isaac's commitment to portraying all elements of his character's personalities uniquely.[31]
  • On April 1, 2022, Moorhead and Benson mentioned how they helmed the second and fourth episodes of the Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke-led Disney+ series, and the pair teased the bold choices they were able to make in their latter episode. From this writer’s perspective, their fourth chapter feels more akin to the television work of Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Lost, Watchmen) than anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.[32]
  • On April 7, 2022, it's mentioned that Khonshu is a real Egyptian god, though the spelling “Khonshu” is uncommon. The most common spelling to be found in reference to the real god is Khonsu, sometimes only abbreviated as Khons. Khonsu is indeed the god of the moon, which is a pretty important detail, so good on them...[33]
  • On April 11, 2022, at the end of Summon the Suit, as the camera pans from Marc's alter Steven Grant in the mirror to Marc sitting on the floor, audiences get a glimpse of his thin gold Magen David necklace. The camera doesn’t prioritize the Magen David, preferring instead to show the pain and regret in Marc’s eyes, but eagle-eyed viewers got a subtle nod to Marc’s faith and upbringing, one that is ubiquitous to his character in the comics...[34]
  • On April 13, 2022, Hawke said about his casting, “It was one of the simplest, most organic things that has ever happened to me in my career,” Ethan Hawke explains to Marvel.com. Hawke was actually already talking to Moon Knight director and executive producer Mohamed Diab about another project the director was working on, but Diab then had to break the bad news to him that he was going to do something else first. As Hawke puts it, Diab was going off to do “this big Marvel job”. “I said to Mohamed, ‘Look, that's great. You got to do that. Call me when you're done, we'll meet again,” continues Hawke. Later, Hawke took a walk to get coffee in his neighborhood and ran into Isaac — an actor he had never actually worked with before — who made a suggestion. “[Oscar’s like], ‘Hey, you know, I'm doing this Marvel show. You should play the villain.’ I'm like, ‘Who's directing?’” and the rest, you could say, is history as Hawke explains. “Before dinner, I'd gotten a call from my agent saying, ‘Hey, we just got this offer from Marvel,’” Hawke says with a laugh.[35]

  • On April 20, 2022, after The Tomb aired Hawke went onto say that “We have a hero who has a fractured mind. And he’s an unreliable narrator, and what you realize at the end of four is that you’re being told a story from his point of view, and his point of view might be misleading.”[40]
    • Also on this day, Taweret appeared, but the Egyptian goddess has no prior history in the comics. Antonia Salib, the actress who portrayed Taweret, previously revealed in an interview that she was "given license" by Moon Knight director Mohamed Diab and the crew to "create" her character. Salib also cited that it was a "collaborative process" from the start...[41]
  • On April 21, 2022, during the press tour leading up to the release of Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac was asked about the possibility of Marc Spector's second alter, Jake Lockley, only for Isaac to answer, “It's very possible. You'll have to keep watching to find out”. In addition to that question, the actor was also asked, if Lockley were to appear, he would have a masked persona of his own, like Steven Grant's Mr. Knight in the series. Isaac responded, “I like how you're thinking. That is very logical," saying nothing more.[42]
  • On April 22, 2022, the last two episodes of the series in particular are Moon Knight's biggest steps toward expanding into new cultural territory, with the entirety of their plots taking place in the deserts of Cairo. Layla was instrumental in developing those themes even further. Moreover, Jeremy Slater mentioned that "Marlene Alraune was originally in "in head writer Jeremy Slater’s original script" in place of Layla, Slater stated that "Marlene was never a part of our show. Diversity was incredibly important to our writers' room, and Layla was created our very first week."[43]
    • Also on this day, it was mentioned how Marvel Studios secretly revealed the asylum in Moon Knight Episode 2 in the sequence in which Steven Grant was kidnapped and taken to Arthur Harrow's cult base. As Layla and Steven attempted to escape Harrow's captive they ran through a corpse-filled room. The mysterious storage room closely resembles Arthur Harrow's office in the asylum, with an obvious change of decor. While covered by curtains in the office, the windows can be seen to be identical, with the same tall column and beam structure in front. Additionally, the same arched alcove is visible on the right-hand side...[44]

I knew I was auditioning for Marvel Studios and I knew it was for a lead — an Egyptian woman. They kind of gave me a fake name, and they had a dummy script. it was only once I was about to meet the director, and the casting team, they just mentioned, ‘By the way, you're going to be a CGI hippo.’ I was like ‘OK, sounds great, let's do it!’”[47]
