Quantum Technology

Pasadena Momentum Laboratory

The Momentum Labs team tests the Quantum Batteries

"We're months away from a beta test."
"Joe had a breakthrough."
"Where did that come from?"
"I built it. It's the secret sauce that we've been missing."
Eli Morrow, Lucy Bauer and Joseph Bauer[src]

Among their activities, one of Momentum Labs' objectives was to find a way to create matter seemingly out of nothing. To that end, two Momentum Labs prominent scientists, Lucy and Joseph Bauer, searched for the Darkhold, a book of infinite knowledge, instead of resorting to traditional science. They successfully found the Book of Spells[1], which enabled Joseph to build a Quantum Battery. The other members of Momentum Labs, including Eli Morrow, were informed of this breakthrough, and they soon conducted a test in the Pasadena Momentum Laboratory, which was successful, as they seemingly created a carbon shard out of nothing.

As the team celebrated this tremendous achievement, thinking that they could even end starvation thanks to it, Morrow, who was bewildered by this new technology tried to ask the Bauers for more explanations, but Joseph refused to show him the book he had used to create the Battery.[2]

Joseph Bauer's Drift

"He's insane. Changing the specs without consulting us? We got to get that book away from him."
Eli Morrow to Lucy Bauer[src]

However, Joseph Bauer was soon corrupted by the power of the Darkhold. To that end, instead of creating matter with the Quantum Batteries, he tried to gain matter generation abilities for himself, using a Quantum Particle Generator he had built with the Darkhold. This was discovered by Eli Morrow, who worried for his colleague and discovered that Lucy Bauer shared the same objectives than her husband.

Enraged by Morrow's attempts to take the book from him, albeit for his own safety, Joseph hired the Fifth Street Locos in an attempt to assassinate Morrow. However, the gangsters ended up attacking Morrow's nephews Robbie and Gabe Reyes instead.[2]

"Where is Frederick? Where are the others? What have you done with them?"
"Same thing that I'm gonna do to you!"
Lucy Bauer and Eli Morrow[src]

In retaliation for the Attack on Robbie and Gabe Reyes, Eli Morrow, who had also grown obsessed by the Darkhold, returned to the Pasadena Momentum Laboratory. Using the Quantum Batteries, he murdered most of his colleagues, including Lucy Bauer, and used the Quantum Particle Generator in an attempt to gain the same powers that Joseph Bauer was after. However, the experiment did not work. Unbeknownst to Morrow, his deceased colleagues, still trapped in the Quantum Batteries, were turned into ghost-like entities. Morrow then tried to beat the Darkhold's location out of Joseph, but Joseph refused to give it up, causing him to fall into a coma while Morrow was imprisoned in the South Ridge Penitentiary for attempted manslaughter.[2]

Lucy Bauer releases her former colleagues

"Momentum Alternative Energy Lab. Printout right there in your hands. Best I can tell, that's where they stole the weapon from. But it's been shut down for years."
Daisy Johnson to Robbie Reyes[src]

Years later, the seemingly killed colleagues of Eli Morrow, namely Lucy Bauer, Vincent, Hugo and Frederick, were released out of their respective Quantum Batteries.[3][4] This attracted S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attention, and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents Alphonso Mackenzie and Leo Fitz went to the now abandoned Pasadena Momentum Laboratory to investigate. They were almost killed by Frederick, who wanted to take down the whole building, but they were saved by the intervention of Ghost Rider and Quake.[4]

Lucy herself went to Joseph Bauer's hospital room and tried to have him give up the location of the Darkhold, mortally infecting him in the process.[5] Vincent and Hugo were killed during the South Ridge Penitentiary Riot, during which Lucy kidnapped Eli Morrow in an attempt to revert her condition.[1] Lucy and Morrow reclaimed some equipment from the Pasadena Momentum Laboratory which they transferred into the Roxxon Power Plant to build a new Quantum Particle Generator. Meanwhile, S.H.I.E.L.D. took over all Momentum Labs facilities.[2]
