―Harvey Elder[src]

On a Sunday, Elder and the Subterraneans attacked the Pan Am Building on the day of its opening, submerging the building and the people participating in the opening ceremony into Subterranea. Mole Man, the Subterraneans and his drillers infiltrated the building. His plan was thwarted by the Fantastic Four.[1][2]

Peace with the Surface[]

"I don't trust surface dwellers. I never have. But I do trust Sue."
―Mole Man[src]

Sue Storm, a member of the Fantastic Four, later brokered a peace deal between the surface and Elder. This resulted in Subterranea being granted federal rights.[2]

Battle against Galactus[]

"Welcome to Subterranea! Hello there! Welcome sunshiners. Yes, do me a favor and just wipe your feet upon entry. I'm kidding, it's all dirt. Please keep a move on."
―Mole Man[src]

An evacuation of New York City soon began and the citizens were taken by bus to Subterranea. Elder greeted each bus upon arrival, welcoming them to Subterranea. When Galactus set foot in New York City, he left a heavy impact, causing the water of the river to spill out onto the streets and damage the ground. Elder and the humans looked up at the rumbling and cracking of the ceiling.[2]
