In 2008, Melinda May was taking a shower when her husband, Andrew Garner joined her. They prepared to start a family. Later, they were preparing breakfast when Phil Coulson knocked on the door to pick up May for work. Garner told him the door was unlocked while May went upstairs to get ready. Garner told Coulson he was early and reminded him its him and May's time.
Later that day, Garner got a call from May. Since it was during a mission, Garner was concerned. May told him that the enemies have a girl. Being a psychologist, Garner instructed May how to have the girl trust her.
May returned home a different woman. Something happened on the mission that was too hard for her to tell Garner about. Garner tried to comfort her, but his hand holding May's reminded her of the mission. May took her hand away. Eventually, their relationship strayed further and further away, leading to a divorce.[1]
