Melina Vostokoff lived by herself in her homestead, performing research and experimentation for the Red Room. She experimented on the research stolen from the North Institute in 1995, testing the mind control technology on her pigs. This technology was being used by Dreykov to control the Black Widows, including, unbeknownst to Vostokoff, Yelena Belova.[1]

After breaking Alexei Shostakov out of prison, Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova learned that Melina Vostokoff was still alive and living outside of Saint Petersburg. The trio went to find the last member of their fake family to learn the location of the Red Room. The reunion was tense as the group debated the authenticity of their family and the morality of Vostokoff's research, but was cut short as Vostokoff had alerted the Red Room to the others' arrival. Romanoff and Vostokoff switched clothes and used Photostatic Veils to disguise themselves as each other in order to fool Dreykov. A group led by Taskmaster arrived and incapacitated Shostakov, while "Vostokoff" took out "Romanoff" and Belova. Taskmaster then took "Vostokoff" and the others to the Red Room Academy.[1]
