- "Fear? What do you know about fear, Sam? About being a threat? A living force of destruction."
- ―Bruce Banner to Captain America[src]
Doctor David Bruce Banner, Ph.D. is a scientist whose exposure to gamma radiation transformed him into rage-fueled primal creature known as Hulk. Banner struggled with his condition and the fear he induced into others, but Sam Wilson reached out to him and became his friend. Afraid to hurt Wilson, Banner attempted to get rid of Hulk by bombarding himself with gamma radiation, but his experiment failed and resulted in the creation of Apex. As Banner's failure started the Gamma War, Banner isolated himself but Wilson reached out to him again and asked for his help against the invasion. Banner was hesitant, but eventually decided to use an old Atomic Bomb to become Mega-Hulk and defeated Apex, taking control of the Gamma Beasts and leading them away from humanity.
Biography[]
Seeking Help[]

Banner meets Sam Wilson
- "The rage isn't even the worst part when he takes over. It's the fear. The fear I see in everyone else's eyes."
"And how does that make you feel?"
"Lonely. Because if I'm being honest, I'm as scared of myself as they are of me." - ―Bruce Banner and Sam Wilson[src]
Bruce Banner was exposed to Gamma Radiation which caused him to transform into a giant monster known as Hulk whenever he was stressed. Banner attempted several methods to control his anger, including jogging, which was where he met Sam Wilson.

Banner accidentally transforms into Hulk
Banner explained his situation to Wilson, who suggested he try talking about his feelings in therapy. Banner attended a meeting with Wilson's support group and opened up about how he felt lonely due to the everyone being afraid of Hulk. Wilson decided to befriend Banner and invited him on his boat with his sister. Banner enjoyed the peacefulness, but it was ruined when an accident caused Banner to turn into Hulk. Ashamed of being seen as a monster, Hulk ran away from Wilson.[2]
Creating the Gamma Beasts[]

Banner attempts to get rid of Hulk
No longer wanting to be seen as a monster, Banner, in an act of desperation, decided to expose himself to more Gamma Radiation in order to get rid of Hulk. However, the increased exposure to Gamma Radiation instead caused Banner to transform into Hulk as another beast was created from him. Hulk reverted back to Banner, who witnessed as the new monster escaped and proceeded to spawn several Gamma Beasts. The Gamma War commenced and Banner retreated to Astra Islands, an abandoned nuclear combat bomber, where he would live without turning into Hulk for years.[2]
Sam Wilson's Visit[]

Banner refuses to help Sam Wilson
- "Why do you think I built this protocol?"
"You built it to use against yourself?"
"I built it to protect everyone from a monster no one can control." - ―Bruce Banner and Sam Wilson[src]
Ten years after the Gamma War, Banner was visited by Sam Wilson, who he showed around the island. Wilson explained that he needed Banner's help to fight the new wave of Gamma Beasts that had emerged under the leadership of the Apex. Banner immediately refused to help, but Wilson insisted that they needed him. Banner, however, showed Wilson the Mighty Avenger Protocol, which he revealed he built to use against himself. Wilson stated that he never viewed Banner as a monster, and had hoped that he would face his fear and realize that.[2]
The New Apex[]

Banner tells Sam Wilson he is not afraid
- "It's okay, Sam. For the first time in a long time, I'm not afraid."
- ―Bruce Banner to Sam Wilson[src]
After Sam Wilson left Astra Islands, Banner contemplated his words and ultimately decided to help fight against the Apex. Banner activated the nuke from the island to release a massive amount of Gamma Radiation which he would absorb all of. Banner entered the bomb and flew to New York, where he told Sam Wilson that he was no longer afraid.

Mega-Hulk kills the Apex
Banner then dropped the bomb and transformed, now into Mega-Hulk. A fight then broke out between Mega-Hulk and the Apex, with the Gamma Beasts watching. When Mega-Hulk began losing the fight, Wilson helped him by attacking the Apex, allowing Mega-Hulk to kill the Apex by blasting it with Gamma Radiation. Mega-Hulk then approached the Avengers, but Wilson spoke to him and told Mega-Hulk that he still saw his friend in him. Mega-Hulk stood down and led the Gamma Beasts away and they all went to Astra Islands to live in peace.[2]
