- "That bastard didn't put it back."
- ―Peter Quill to Gamora[src]
The Mean Guard was an operative of the Nova Corps and was stationed at the Kyln. The guard searched through the possessions of a new inmate, Peter Quill, in the guards' quarters. He noticed Quill's Walkman among the items and put the headphones on, just as Quill was being escorted past. Quill approached the guard and demanded he took the headphones off and placed the Walkman in impound. The guard simply grunted, grabbed a taser rod, and tased Quill several times as the prisoner fell to the ground. The guard later returned Quill's belongings to impound, but kept the Walkman.[1] That night, the guard danced around the prison while listening to music on the Walkman.[4]
The next day, the guard continued to listen to music on the Walkman while Quill and his allies were escaping the Kyln. The guard was knocked out by Quill, who had noticed the Walkman was missing from his possessions and returned to the guards' quarters before finishing his escape to retrieve the Walkman.
The guard was killed along with the rest of the staff and prisoners in the Kyln when Ronan the Accuser raided the Kyln searching for Gamora.[1]
