Maryland is a state in the northeastern region of the United States.
History[]
Birth of Sebastian Derik[]
- "Baltimore, born and raised."
- ―Sebastian Derik[src]
S.H.I.E.L.D. assassin Sebastian Derik was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland before joining the organization. Derik told Janice Robbins that he was born and raised in Baltimore when she thought he could be from Iowa due to his way of speaking.[1]
Gamma Incident[]
General Thaddeus Ross, military overseer of a research project denominated Project Gamma Pulse, offered Bruce Banner to take him to a military laboratory in Maryland, in order to test the results the project had on him. There Banner was exposed to a high dose of Gamma Radiation that, instead of killing him, induced a series of transformations into a giant, green-skinned humanoid. However, he refused Ross' conditions, and became a fugitive of the United States Armed Forces.[2]
Andrews Air Force Base[]
Nick Fury traveled to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to have a meeting with General Thaddeus Ross regarding Ross' unauthorized access to S.H.I.E.L.D. database. However, Ross assured Fury that the World Security Council gave him clearance for using the database, as Fury was not the only one trusted with the safety of the world, as Ross considered himself the sword to Fury's shield, as Ross battled enemies on the battlefield while Fury was safe behind a wall protecting secrets. Ross commented on his new embracement of advanced science in modern warfare and the breakthroughs he managed to obtain while Fury was busy looking for antiquated weapons. Fury suggested to pull Emil Blonsky off the field immediately as he was dangerous, and Ross had rushed into things he did not fully understand, but Ross refused, saying he did not take orders from Fury, leaving to catch Bruce Banner. Fury called to one of his subordinates to obtain the location of Banner and send the information to Agent Natasha Romanoff in order to arrive as soon as possible.[3]
Visit to Doctor Streiten[]
Phil Coulson traveled to Bethesda to confront Doctor J. Streiten about the doctor's role in Coulson's resurrection. Coulson waited for Streiten in the back seat of his car until Streiten left his home and entered the car. Coulson revealed he learnt that his recovery in Tahiti was not true, and demanded to know what they did to him. Streiten revealed that Coulson was dead for days following the Battle of New York, but Nick Fury ordered a team of scientists to use unethical procedures to resurrect him. Streiten also told him that he was brought in during the seventh operation, keeping him conscious to monitor his brain activity, but the extreme pain and the neurological damage he endured made Coulson beg for his own death. In order to restore him to his former self and recover his will to live, they rewrote the memories of the procedure and replaced them with memories of a recovery in the island of Tahiti. However, as Streiten apologized for what he did to him, Coulson simply left the car.[4]
Training of Erik Killmonger[]
- "Erik Stevens. Graduated Annapolis age nineteen."
- ―Everett Ross[src]
Upon joining the United States Navy, Erik Killmonger was sent to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. After receiving his training there, Killmonger joined the United States Navy SEALs.[5]
Skye's Treatment[]
Phil Coulson and his team intended to use some of the procedures used on Coulson to resurrect him, in order to save Skye, critically injured after being shot by Ian Quinn. Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons were ordered to study the Clearance Level 10 file regarding Coulson's death and recovery to learn about the actual procedures used, and choose one that could save Skye upon arriving to Bethesda, the location where Coulson was supposedly treated after his death. On route, S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters sent Agents John Garrett and Antoine Triplett to ensure that Ian Quinn was taken to the Fridge for interrogation. However, Garrett was able to convince Headquarters that he was able to interrogate Quinn on the Bus as it continued flying to Bethesda in order to save Skye's life. Fitz and Simmons tried to contact Dr. J. Streiten, knowing that he was one of the responsible of the procedures, but the crew of the trauma center in Bethesda informed them that Streiten had gone off the grid, and the personnel and facilities that appeared in the file did not exist, at least in Bethesda. Simmons informed Coulson of her discovery, and ordered her and Fitz to figure out the actual location where he was treated.[6]
Nick Fury's Operation[]
In 2014, Nick Fury was taken to the Bethesda hospital to be operated following an attack in the streets of Washington, D.C. and an assassination attempt in Steve Rogers' apartment, where he was shot three times by a assassin. Natasha Romanoff arrived at the hospital and entered the observation room where Rogers was already watching watched a team of surgeons, including Doctor Fine, operated on Fury to save his life. Romanoff asked about Fury's status, and then she inquired about the shooter. Rogers revealed he was fast and strong, and he had a metal arm. As Maria Hill joined them in the room, Romanoff asked her about the bullets used by the assassin, that were untraceable, and Romanoff correctly guessed they were Soviet made. Rogers, Romanoff and Hill watched how Fury's state quickly deteriorated, as his pulse was dropping. Brock Rumlow and Jasper Sitwell also entered the room as the doctors prepared to use a defibrillator on Fury to make his heart beat again. Romanoff, in shock, pleaded with Fury not to leave and do that to her. Despite the doctors' efforts, Fury was unresponsive and the machines shown his pulse was flatlining, and the doctors pronounced Fury's death at 1:03 A.M. Rogers turned away as Fury's death was pronounced, and looked down at the flash drive with the files retrieved in the Lemurian Star that Fury gave to him.
Rogers accompanied Romanoff to a room where Fury's body was being held, where she barely contained her tears for Fury's death, until Hill arrived announcing she had to take Fury's body. Rogers approached Romanoff, who did not respond but tenderly touched Fury's head before walking out without saying anything. In the hallway, Romanoff angrily asked Rogers why was Fury in his apartment, but as he answered that he did not know, they were interrupted by Rumlow, who announced he was requested back at the Triskelion immediately. Romanoff told Rogers that he was a terrible liar before leaving him alone. As Rogers overheard that a full STRIKE team was going to escort him, he followed Fury's advice of not trusting anyone, and Rogers hid the flashdrive in a vending machine at the hospital before joining Rumlow and accompanying him.
Rogers returned to the hospital disguised in casual civilian clothes after leaving the Triskelion, now labelled as a S.H.I.E.L.D. fugitive. He tried to retrieve the flash drive from the vending machine but found that it was gone. Suddenly, Romanoff appeared to him chewing gum from the vending machine, and Rogers angrily pushes her into another room to interrogate her. Rogers asked her where the flash drive was, but she retaliated by asking him where did he get it. Correctly guessing that Fury gave it to him, she asked the reason, though none of them knew what the flash drive contained. Rogers revealed that Fury hired Georges Batroc and his pirates, and Romanoff, though not knowing that, asserted that it made sense, as the Lemurian Star hid something and Fury needed a way in. As Rogers was starting to get angry, Romanoff revealed that she knew the identity of Fury's killer, a mysterious mercenary referred to as Winter Soldier, whose existence was denied by most of the intelligence community, as he was a ghost credited with over two dozen assassinations in the last fifty years.
Romanoff revealed she met once Winter Soldier herself, while she was on a mission in 2009 to escort a nuclear engineer out of Iran, they were attacked near Odesa, and though she was covering the engineer, Winter Soldier shot him through her, leaving her scarred. The bullet used was virtually identical to the ones used to kill Fury. Romanoff said that it was futile to go after Winter Soldier and that she already tried it before with no results. Showing that she had the flash drive, Rogers told her they were going to find out what Winter Soldier wanted.[7]
Falcon Harness[]
Sam Wilson revealed to Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff that the last remaining EXO-7 Falcon suit was kept at Fort Meade, behind three guarded gates and a twelve-inch steel wall. Wilson handed them a dossier about the mechanical harness he used in his missions with the military. Romanoff indicated that it should not be a problem and she departed with Rogers to retrieve it, managing to infiltrate Fort Meade and steal the harness unharmed.[7]
Project Insight[]
Ellicott City and other areas in Maryland were one of the intended targets of Project Insight, as many of its citizens were deemed a threat for HYDRA's plans. The Insight satellites marked numerous individuals as candidates in Ellicott City and the surrounding area. However, the city was not shot as HYDRA was stopped in time.[7]
Recovery of Captain America[]
Steve Rogers, having been injured during the fight at the Triskelion, was taken to the same hospital in Bethesda where Nick Fury had been operated on, and he recovered in a heavily custodied room. Sam Wilson visited Rogers while he was still unconscious, playing the same Marvin Gaye's song, "Trouble Man", he recommended Rogers the day they met. Rogers regained consciousness and repeated the quote they first exchanged when they met. Wilson looked at Rogers and smiled at him.
Brock Rumlow, who was badly disfigured and burned, was also taken to the Bethesda hospital, after having been trapped in the collision of the Helicarrier against the Triskelion, but the Bethesda medical team managed to save his life.[7]
Attack on the Damage Control Truck[]
- "How are you going to get there if it's like three hundred miles away?"
"It's not too far from D.C." - ―Ned Leeds and Peter Parker[src]
In 2016, Peter Parker located Vulture's Crew near an empty gas station in Maryland, which Parker mistook for their Headquarters. Using the Spider-Man Suit's advanced function to overhear their conversation, Parker then overheard Herman Schultz and Phineas Mason talking together and learned that the crew intended to steal confiscated alien tech from Damage Control transfer trucks coming by shortly. The A.I. then showed Parker his new Web-Shooters and it's many more advanced web-shooter combinations. However, Parker picked the wrong options and fell on his face, before electrocuting the gas station.
Parker then witnessed the arrival of Vulture, who was using his Vulture's Exo-Suit to catch up with and attach himself to the Damage Control truck that was driving by. Parker went after the truck and found Vulture had used a Matter Phase Shifter to get inside where he was stealing all of the alien and android based technology that he could get his hands on.
Parker confronted Vulture when he was about to leave. However, Vulture refused to allow Parker to take his profit away from him and reattached himself to his Exo-Suit and furiously attacked Parker. Parker managed to dodge the attack, however, he discovered that the Webs that his A.I. had selected were useless in the fight.
After Parker pulled the bag back from Vulture, he fell back inside the truck, causing the bag to fall with him while the Matter Phase Shifter closed behind him. Not noticing that the Phase Shifter had closed, Parker accidentally knocked himself unconscious when he banged his head against the ceiling in his attempt to get out, allowing Vulture to escape.[8]
Visiting Isaiah Bradley[]
In 2024, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson went to Baltimore, Maryland and walked through a neighborhood to Isaiah Bradley's house. On their way, they passed a boy who called Wilson "Black Falcon", but Wilson corrected him saying it was just "Falcon" and then proceeded to tease the boy in a jokingly manner.
After they reached Bradley's house, Bradley's grandson, Eli Bradley came to the door and refused to let them in. Barnes told him that he knew his grandfather and they were let in. Inside, Bradley recalled fighting the Winter Soldier during the Korean War, although Barnes told him he wasn't like that anymore. Barnes then told Bradley about the existence of more Super Soldiers and asked for his help, but Bradley became angry upon hearing this and ordered Barnes and Wilson out of his house.
As Wilson and Barnes walked back down the street, Wilson asked Barnes why Bradley's identity was kept secret. Before Barnes could answer, Baltimore policemen arrived and told Barnes that he was under arrest for missing his court-mandated therapy session.
Therapy Session[]
At the Baltimore Police Station, Bucky Barnes was let go and met with his therapist Christina Raynor in the lobby. There Sam Wilson met Raynor and found out by John Walker that he had let Barnes go free. However, Raynor ordered a therapy session in one of the station's interrogation rooms and told Wilson to join. During the session, Raynor asked Barnes and Wilson to engage in open dialogue, in which Barnes asked Wilson why he gave up the shield, in which Wilson said he thought he did the right thing. After the session was over, Barnes and Wilson left the station.
Outside, Barnes and Wilson were met by Walker and Lemar Hoskins who told them the name of the leader of the Flag Smashers. Walker also asked the two to join them, but Wilson refused noting that he and Barnes were free agents and not held down by the government's orders. After hearing this, a disappointed Walker told them to stay out of his way.
Wilson and Barnes continued down the street and decided what their next move should be, with Barnes suggesting they go and visit Helmut Zemo.[9]
More Visits to Bradley[]
A few days later, Sam Wilson returned to Baltimore and walked back to Isaiah Bradley's house. Along the way, he passed Eli Bradley who was out playing basketball with a friend. Eli asked Wilson what he was doing there and told him that he'd be back soon, and Wilson proceeded on to the house.
Wilson then found Bradley outside tending to his plants and asked if he could speak with him. Having let Wilson inside, Bradley and Wilson sat in the living room, and Bradley answered Wilson's questions. Bradley also recalled his past having taken the Super Soldier Serum and what his life was like because of it, getting emotional at times. Bradley told Wilson that due to his Super Soldier abilities he was able to combat against the Winter Soldier when they crossed paths. When the subject of Captain America came up, he told Wilson that no black man would ever hold that mantle and was convinced of that sentiment due to his past experiences. After Wilson left Bradley's house, he called his sister telling her that he was coming back.[10]
Days later, Wilson returned to Baltimore, now having taken on the mantle of Captain America, and was greeted by Eli at the door of Bradley's house. After Eli called Wilson "Black Falcon", Wilson said he needed to learn some manners, before Bradley walked up from the backyard. Wilson and Bradley then discussed Wilson's new role. Wilson also told Bradley he wanted to show him something asking him to get ready to leave, with Eli asking where they were going.[11]

Killmonger’s Education[]
- "Colonel Rhodes, what can you tell me about our knight in shining camouflage?"
"Graduated Annapolis at nineteen, MIT a year later." - ―Pepper Potts and James Rhodes[src]
In an alternate universe, after graduating from the United States Naval Academy, Erik Stevens attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Working on his doctoral thesis, Stevens created the Project Liberator, which involved automated combat drones that would make human troops obsolete. However, Stevens encountered interface issues that halted the development until the project was picked up by Stark Industries years later.[12]
