The Category Creation Policy is a basic guideline used when deciding whether a new category should be created or not. The Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki aims to cover every subject within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while maintaining a high-quality level in each and every article. For that reason, the proper categorization of all articles is important, as having too many or too few categories in an article is counter-productive.
Due to misunderstandings of the whole purpose of categorizing, we ask that you do not create new categories and add them to articles. Most of the time, if a category does not exist, it is not intended to exist, or there is already an existing category that covers its purpose. Please be sure to ask the Administrators before creating a category.
This policy focuses on whether or not a category should be created, explaining the categories that can be automatically created as soon as an article can be categorized as such.
Media
Any time a new media is announced, a group of different categories can be created to collect the articles related to said media. This group of categories include
- A main or parent category, with the same name as the article for the media it is intented (e.g. Category:Doctor Strange (film)
- Subcategories for Actors, Characters, Crew Members, Items, Locations, Merchandise, Soundtrack, Vehicles and Weapons
- One-Shots only get individual categories for Actors and Characters. The rest of categories are included in a category for every one-shot, already created.
- TV series and Web series can also have a subcategory for their respective Episodes. That category would include the different Season articles.
- Documentaries have a category for Interviewees, as they don't have any actors by definition.
Characters
First of all, characters are categorized under their corresponding Media categories. This category can be substituted by the Mentioned Only Characters if needed. From an in-universe point of view, any character article is categorized under four categories that can be applied to the vast majority if not all characters. These four categories are classified under the Race, Gender, Hair Color and Eye Color criteria.
- New categories for Races can be created as soon as one character article belongs to said category, and the race article also exists. If they do not, they are usually classified under the Creatures category.
- New categories for Gender can be created as soon as one character article belongs to said category.
- New categories for Hair Color and Eye Color can be created as soon as one character article belongs to said category.
Characters are often categorized by their occupation too.
- Categories for new occupations are created once there is enough number of articles to warrant their creation. Seek for admin input or approval BEFORE creating them.
- Occupations related to their membership to a Team or Organization are described in the section below
Other usual categories for characters include: Finally, there are a handful of Trivia-like categories that help with the categorization of characters within the scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki.
- Trivia-like intrinsic to the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be created upon request. So far this includes Enhanced Individuals, Index, Black Panthers, Iron Fists, Sorcerer Supreme, Hive Hosts, Spirit of Vengeance Hosts, Centipede Device Users, Extremis Users, GH.325 Users and Super Soldier Serum Users.
- Out-of-universe trivia-like categories also may help with said categorization. Categories such as Characters based on real people, Unnamed Characters, Fictional Characters, Brainwashed Characters, Multilingual Characters, Heroes and Villains are included in these.
- For Deceased Characters, a category for Characters Killed by can be created as soon as any character is killed by another character who has its own article.
Categories for specific traits that are clearly defined for a handful of characters but cannot be widely applied to characters in general cannot be created. These traits include, but are not limited to: citizenship, ethnicity, religious preference or sexual orientation.
Items/Weapons/Vehicles
Items, Weapons and Vehicles are usually categorized with the general category and the correspondent media category.
- Categories for sub-groups of items, weapons or vehicles can be created once there is enough number of articles to warrant their creation. Seek for admin input or approval BEFORE creating them.
- Items related to their ownership to a Team or Organization are described in the section below
Locations
Locations are usually categorized with the general category and the correspondent media category.
- Categories for sub-groups of locations can be created once there is enough number of articles to warrant their creation. Seek for admin input or approval BEFORE creating them.
- Locations related to their affiliation to a Team or Organization are described in the section below
Organizations
Organizations are usually categorized with the general category and a self-named category.
- Categories for the members of said organizations are classified under Leaders, Employees, Agents, Operatives, Soldiers, Officers, Consultants, Officials. Choosing the proper nomenclature depends on both the specific type of organization and the differences explained in the Manual of Style
- A few organizations deserve a category for their Clients, especially law firms and private agencies.
- In case the nomenclature above doesn't adjust to the nomenclature above, a Members category can be used, but it should be avoided as a general rule.
- Items related to an organization are classified under Equipment. If they are items developed by a company, they are classified under Products.
- Locations related to an organization are classified under Facilities.
- Projects developed by an organization are classified under Projects.
Teams
Teams are usually categorized with the general category and a self-named category.
- Categories for the members of said team are classified under the Members category.
- If needed, teams can also use the Equipment and Facilities categories with the same purposes as organizations.
Events and Wars
Events and Wars are classified only within their general category. Please do not create any other type of sub-categories, like media categories or categories by scope, location or organizations involved.
Actors
Actors are usually categorized with the general category and the correspondent media category. Voice actors also have their own category.
- A series of "Trivia"-like categories for actors also exist, including Non-Human Actors, Actors Portraying Themselves, Actors with Different MCU Roles, Actors with Roles in Comic Book Adaptations outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Deceased Actors. Seek for admin input or approval BEFORE creating them.
Crew Members
Crew are usually categorized with the general category and the correspondent media category.
- Different kinds of crew members have their own categories, such as Directors, Showrunners, Writers, Producers, Composers, Comic Artists, Scientific Consultants and Stunt Performers. Seek for admin input or approval BEFORE creating them.
- A series of "Trivia"-like categories for crew members also exist, including Crew Members in Comic Book Adaptations outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Crew Members with Roles in Comic Book Adaptations outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Deceased Crew. Seek for admin input or approval BEFORE creating them.
Page-Type Categories
There specific type of Content type articles that should contain their own category and, in some cases, the correspondent media category. These categories include Awards, Full Credits, Galleries, Home Video, Merchandise, Portals, Quote, Release Dates, Reviews, Songs, Timeline, Trivia, and Universe.
- Creation of sub-categories for this group is, at thist time, not allowed.
