"I prefer to take my time."
―Marcus Scarlotti to Noelle Walters[src]

Marcus Scarlotti is an assassin who was hired by HYDRA to pose as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in order to frame the organization as Scarlotti's teams attacked the United Nations, before they arranged an ambush in a Safe House. Scarlotti was eventually discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. and, having also been defeated by Melinda May, he was given over to Glenn Talbot's custody.

Biography

Mercenary for Hire

Attack Against Hawkeye

"An assassin, almost killed Barton a few years back. Runs a team of mercenaries, mostly for HYDRA."
Bobbi Morse[src]

Marcus Scarlotti led an assassination attempt against Clint Barton, while he was still a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Although the assassination attempt was unsuccessful, Scarlotti had then become well-known simply for coming closer than most to killing the legendary S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.[1]

Attack on the United Nations

"S.H.I.E.L.D. is done hiding."
―Marcus Scarlotti to Glenn Talbot[src]

Scarlotti's team attacks the United Nations

As a mercenary, Scarlotti had been hired by Daniel Whitehall to lead his crew of mercenaries and attack a meeting that was being held at the United Nations Headquarters, where Glenn Talbot was speaking out against the continued activities of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Scarlotti had been ordered to discredit S.H.I.E.L.D. so his team disguised themselves as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, they stormed into the meeting and killed many of the attendees with Splinter Bombs, including Adamo Dioli, causing the rest of the guests to run in terror, while Dioli screamed in terror while his body was reduced to dust in a matter of seconds.

When the security guard attempted to stop them, Scarlotti then threw another one of his Splinter Bombs at him, reducing him to dust, while Scarlotti pushed a man aside on got onto the table, ensuring that he was in full view of the secruity cameras, allowing them to believe that S.H.I.E.L.D. was responsible for this attack, as their logo was printed on Scarlotti's Bulletproof Vest. As Talbot attempted to get the people to safety, Scarlotti observed the chaos, before then telling Talbot that S.H.I.E.L.D. was done hiding, before he threw another Splinter Bomb toward Talbot, but failed to kill him, only breaking Talbot's arm.[1]

Attacking the Safe House

Scarlotti learns of Julien Beckers's location

"HYDRA will never defeat S.H..."
"You were saying?"

While he was waiting for his next mission, Scarlotti was supplied with his case of Splinter Bombs from Toshiro Mori, which he had admired. Eventually, Scarlotti received a text message from HYDRA, informing him of the location of his contact, Julien Beckers, once Scarlotti had updated his team, they had then drove their Humvee to a S.H.I.E.L.D. Safe House in Bruges, where they intended to ambush all of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who were stationed there.

Scarlotti preparing to torture Noelle Walters

Upon arriving that the S.H.I.E.L.D. Safe House, Scarlotti and his team proceeded to murder everybody in the building, before they awaited the arrival of Noelle Walters. Once Walters returned, she was greeted by Beckers, while she expressed her surprise at seeing him, only for Beckers to reveal all the dead agents, who had been stationed there, while Scarlotti's mercenaries proceeded to disarm and recapture her. With Walters defenseless, Beckers calmly invited Scarlotti to do what he did best, as Scarlotti took out his Rope Dart Knife and prepared to torture Walters to death, as he held the blade to Walters' throat.

Scarlotti sees Noelle Walters turn to dust

However, Walters had then managed to head butt Scarlotti before he could begin cutting her, before being held back down by the crew of mercenaries. Scarlotti had then licked the blood away from his lips, expressing his disappointment, as he then claimed that he preferred to take his time with his killings, before impaling Walters into the gut with another Splinter Bomb. While Walters was reduced to dust, she defiantly claimed that HYDRA would never defeat S.H.I.E.L.D., only to die before she could complete the sentence, as Scarlotti turned back and mockingly questioning what Walters had been saying.[1]

Encounter with Melinda May

Scarlotti being confronted by Lance Hunter

"You have got about ten seconds to tell me exactly what you're doing here."
"I'm a merc, mate, like you lot, and if you're looking to take out a few S.H.I.E.L.D. agents higher on the food chain, I know a couple. They just need about ninety seconds to get in position."
―Marcus Scarlotti and Lance Hunter[src]

While Scarlotti's crew were stationed at that S.H.I.E.L.D. Safe House, they were altered to Lance Hunter kicking down the door, as Scarlotti and his team confronted him, while Hunter had insisted that he was also with HYDRA. While Scarlotti had then questioned who had sent him, Hunter instead commented on the local beer, offering a bottle to one of Scarlotti's people. However, Scarlotti insisted that Hunter tell him exactly what he was doing there before they killed him.

Scarlotti asking what Lance Hunter is doing

Hunter had then suggested to Scarlotti that they could all locate the higher ranked S.H.I.E.L.D. agents together, as he knew where to find them, before claiming that they only needed ninety seconds to get in position, as this confused Scarlotti. However, before Scarlotti could react, Bobbi Morse and Melinda May smashed through the windows and attacked his team, while Scarlotti furiously kicked Hunter to the ground, before then attempting to escape by running away during all the chaos, with May chasing him down through their hallways, while Hunter and Morse had fought against Scarlotti's two mercenaries.

Scarlotti furiously battling Melinda May

Finding himself trapped in one of their rooms, Scarlotti turned to face May, as he drew his Rope Dart Knife, which he had immediately used the slice the gun out from May's hands, leaving her unarmed against him, while Scarlotti confidently swung his knife through the air, noting that May was now all alone in the fight. Scarlotti had then proceeded to lash out with his rope dart knife, swinging it through the room with remarkable skill, with May barely being able to avoid the blade, as he sliced it across the floor, forcing May to jump out of the way and land face first back on the floor, before Scarlotti attacked her again.

Scarlotti attempts to strangle Melinda May

However, when Scarlotti attempted to impale May with the blade, he had inadvertently embedded the knife into the wall behind her, which had allowed May to kick Scarlotti aside and detach it from the chain, leaving Scarlotti in the defensive position. With May now armed with the knife, Scarlotti was forced to use the chain as his main defense from her, deflecting May's attacks, while he used kicks to try and kick May away. Eventually, Scarlotti then managed to knock May against the wall, as he wrapped the chain around her throat and attempted to strangle her to death, until May had then broken free of his grasp.

Scarlotti taken away by Glenn Talbot's men

May had then responded by elbowing Scarlotti into the face, before freeing herself from the chains around her neck, as she then kneed Scarlotti into the stomach and head, leaving him dazed, before May ended the fight with a final kick to the chest, knocking Scarlotti onto the floor. With Scarlotti and all his team defeated by S.H.I.E.L.D., the safe house was then handed back over to the United States Armed Forces, while Scarlotti and his team were taken into custody, under the watch of Glenn Talbot. Once he was arrested, Scarlotti made eye contact with both May and Talbot, before being taken to prison.[1]
