Theodore "Ted" Sallis is a human who underwent a transformation, becoming a creature dubbed Man-Thing. He was captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. and confined at the Fridge, although he escaped when the facility was liberated. Man-Thing then left Earth and found himself on Sakaar, where he participated in Grandmaster's Contest of Champions and became a Champion himself. He eventually returned to Earth, where he struck a friendship with Jack Russell, a werewolf who wished to protect humans who underwent transformations from being hunted.
Man-Thing was found and captured by Verussa Bloodstone, who confined him to the grounds of Bloodstone Manor as she organized a monster hunt, with Man-Thing as the intended prey. Man-Thing was affixed with the Bloodstone, which made him weaker and angrier, although he was rescued by the combined efforts of Russell and Elsa Bloodstone. Man-Thing returned to the temple to help Elsa by killing Verussa, after which he left in search of Russell, eventually reuniting with him.
Man-Thing was among the many entities that were imprisoned at the Fridge and observed by S.H.I.E.L.D. In 2014, during the Hydra Uprising, S.H.I.E.L.D. was dissolved and all of its files were publicized, including those regarding the Man-Thing and his background. Man-Thing and the other prisoners were freed when the Fridge was raided by John Garrett and Grant Ward.[2]
Man-Thing left Earth and went into space, where he became stranded on Sakaar. There he was imprisoned by the Grandmaster and was forced to fight in his Contest of Champions. Man-Thing won many fights in the Grand Arena, gaining the praise of the Grandmaster, who granted him the title of Champion of Sakaar and dedicated a sculpture to him on the facade of the palace.[3]
In 2025, Man-Thing was captured by Verussa Bloodstone, who planned to use him as the main target during the monster hunt she was organizing in order to find a true successor for her recently deceased husband. To prepare him for the hunt, Man-Thing was weakened by the Bloodstone, an ancient red gem that was affixed to his hide, and locked away in the outskirts of the Bloodstone Manor.
Man-Thing waited in hiding until Jack Russell arrived, having entered the monster hunting cabal undercover to rescue him. Russell quickly asked him how he was feeling after having the Bloodstone put on him and told him that he had come up with a plan to escape. Unfortunately, they were interrupted when Russell was found by one of the other hunters, who chased him away.[1]
Man-Thing then attacked Joshua Jovan, quickly burning him to death. Afterwards, he met Elsa Bloodstone. At first, he was unsure of her, but once she called him by his real name, he realized she was an ally. The two headed towards the cracked wall of the temple where Russell put the explosive device in hopes of escaping while being chased by the other hunters.
After the wall was blown up, Man-Thing managed to escape while Elsa took the Bloodstone out of him, Man-Thing then left happily into the forest. Later, Man-Thing returned inside the Temple and rescued Elsa from Verussa Bloodstone, picking her up and burning her to death. He was then told by Elsa that Russell had escaped. Realizing that Russell had transformed into his werewolf identity, he went to find him.
He found Russell in the forest, having reverted to his human form, and took care of him while he slept. The next morning, he gave Russell some coffee to warm up as they listened to Judy Garland's rendition of "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz on a turntable. Russell asked if Elsa was okay, to which he told him she was. They then relaxed as Russell continued to recover from his transformation.[1]
Personality[]
"Well, you keep saying that you're gonna be careful each time and here we go again."
Despite Ted's monstrous appearance, he is kind and caring to those close to him, as seen with his relationship with Jack Russell, where they both take care of each other. This was shown when he risked going back to Bloodstone Manor to save Russell after the latter was captured by Verussa Bloodstone, even though Man-Thing himself had previously escaped. He also took care of Russell after the skirmish at Bloodstone Manor where Russell was forced to become a werewolf. He was also kind to people who did not approach him with fear or evil intentions and addressed him by his human name, like Elsa Bloodstone. According to Jack, Ted has a habit of going out into the open and getting himself into trouble due to being a monster despite assuring his friend that he'll be careful.
But, when Ted is mistreated or approached by people who want to harm him or his allies, he has been shown to be brutally vengeful. This was seen with the killings of Joshua Jovan and Verussa Bloodstone, who both wanted to harm him or those close to him.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Artificially Enhanced Physiology: To be added
Superhuman Strength: Due to his large size and body mass, Man-Thing possesses extraordinarily immense superhuman strength.
Superhuman Durability: Man-Thing is incredibly hard to bring down as his advanced bodily tissues provide him much greater resistance to physical injury.
Superhuman Stamina: Man-Thing's musculature is considerably more efficient than that of normal humans. As a result, his muscles produce practically no fatigue toxins during physical activity compared to those of humans. His virtually inexhaustible stamina enables him to exert himself at peak capacity for an undefined period of time without tiring at all.
Expert Combatant: Man-Thing is shown to be a highly skilled and formidable combatant as he has won many fights during his time on Sakaar after being forced by the Grandmaster to fight in his Contest of Champions.
In the comics, Theodore "Ted" Sallis was a biochemistry professor at Empire State University who became a creature known as Man-Thing. While married to Ellen Brandt, he scarred her face after she betrayed him to A.I.M. As Man-Thing, he protects the Nexus of All Realities.
Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier pitched early on to include Man-Thing as a member of the Thunderbolts, but wasn't allowed to do so by Marvel Studios because Man-Thing was already set to appear in Werewolf by Night. In retrospective, Schreier admitted it all worked out for the best.[4]
