Energy Circle DS
"The language of the Mystic Arts is as old as civilization. The sorcerers of antiquity called the usage of this language "spells", but if that word offends your modern sensibility, you can call it "programs", the source code that shapes reality. We harness energy drawn from other dimensions of the Multiverse to cast spells, to conjure shields and weapons, to make magic!"
―The Ancient One to Stephen Strange[src]

Magic is the mystical practice of utilizing energy drawn from other dimensions to cast spells and shape reality. While its existence disproved by modern day humans as advancements in modern science and technology resulted the belief of its existence become obsolete and dismissed as myth and fiction, it's still commonly used by the Asgardians, the Masters of the Mystic Arts of Earth and other species in the known galaxy.

History

Asgardian Magic

Soulforge
"Your ancestors called it magic but you call it science. I come from a land where they are one and the same."
Thor to Jane Foster[src]

The Asgardian people do not see their magic as some "mythical energy", they instead consider it to be just an advanced form of science. Their society does feature many myths and legends about magic and sorcery, but most consider it nothing that can't be explained through rational thought and discovery, not the supernatural. Their transportation, architecture, weapons and even medical care are based upon using a blend of magical forces and scientific theory. However, individuals such as Frigga, Heimdall and Loki are able to tap into otherworldly forces and gain abilities beyond that of their fellow Asgardians. Asgard is also home to many relics, weapons and artifacts that do contain many magical or cosmic properties.

Eldritch Magic

Doctor Strange Final Trailer 04

The Eldritch Magic[1] utilized by the Masters of the Mystic Arts, is a light-based magic that produces sparks and energy and uses a fiery yellow/orange color palette throughout. It can be used to generate constructs of tangible energy, such as weapons and shields.

Other beings in the galaxy, like the Ravager sorcerer Krugarr, is an adept of this type of magic.[2]

Dark Dimension Magic

Dark Dimension Magic
"Master Kaecilius, that ritual will bring you only sorrow."
Ancient One to Kaecilius[src]

Dark Dimension Magic is a magic that forbidden by Ancient One, whom however used it to expand her lifespan so she can live longer to keep an eye on other members of Masters of the Mystic Arts. Reason why she forbade this magic was due to channeling energy from Dark Dimension would open oneself to Dormammu's influence. The effect of usage of this spell would resulting a symbol burned on the user's forehead and expanded lifespan to the point of near-immortality. When Kaecilius and his fellow Zealots uses stolen vital pages of Book of Cagliostro to contact Dormammu and channeling energy from Dark Dimension, Dormammu's influence over them (which marked by skin around their eyes dark purple and outlined silver and cracked) allowed them to warp reality over them and even conjuring Space Shards as weapons.

Darkhold Magic

May's Hallucination-4x01

An ancient book of spells and unspeakable power, that has been sought after by Red Skull, Daniel Whitehall, and Nick Fury.

Demonic Magic

TheGhost

Both Johnny Blaze and Robbie Reyes are able to access a supernatural magical force that enables them to turn into Ghost Rider - a powerful demonic entity of vengeance. The transformation requires a deal to be made over the user's soul and for that person to become a punisher of the wicked. With use of this demonic force, the user's body is transformed into a skeletal being with a flaming skull.

Types of Magic

Asgardian Magic

  • Illusion Manipulation: Loki[3] and Frigga[4] can generate hazy, green, holographic images, used to create illusions. They have both used this ability to either make decoys of themselves or another person, or to project themselves in another location to speak to someone. Loki was also able to use illusions to alter his appearance, hiding his Asgardian armor as normal human clothes so he could blend in, also transforming his scepter into an ordinary cane. Through illusion, Loki was also able to disguise himself as both Odin and Captain America and was able to make Thor appear as Sif.
  • Invisibility: Loki can make himself and others invisible, through magic. He was able to remain unseen by Heimdall, an impressive feat very few could accomplish and he was also able to walk through a S.H.I.E.L.D. base completely undetected.
  • Telekinesis: Loki can also move objects using only his mind, usually accompanied by a green flash. He was able to telekinetically enhance the force of his throwing daggers[3] and upon hearing of Frigga's death, he unleashed a telekinetic blast that sent everything in his cell, flying away from him.[4]
  • Enchantment: Odin enchanted Mjølnir so that only those who the hammer deemed worthy of its power could lift it.[3] The enchantment made it impossible to lift Mjølnir through brute force alone, as not even Hulk was able to lift it.[5]
  • Omni-Senses: Heimdall possesses sensory capabilities far beyond that of any Asgardians, which made him the gatekeeper to Asgard. His sight itself extends itself to all of the Nine Realms, and his hearing is so precise that he heard the Warriors Three and Sif conspiring against Loki before he decided to passively help them. Heimdall is able to hear other Asgardians calling him from other realms, such as Earth, Jotunheim or Vanaheim. Despite his phenomenal ability, however, his senses have been deceived for a degree by Loki and the Dark Elves.[3][4]
  • Odinsleep: A powerful rejuvenative sleep magic that Odin uses to heal himself and recharge his powerful abilities including the Odinforce and his immortality.[3]
  • Persuasion: Lorelei possesses a unique ability, that Sif described as Sorcery, that allows her to enthrall men. This ability is usually effective through voice, but if Lorelei's victim proves to have a higher will capable of resisting her power, she is able to strengthen the enthrallment through touch.[6]
  • Dark Magic: With the Bifrost Bridge destroyed, Odin was forced to use dark energy to transport Thor to Earth, at the cost of both their healths, to retrieve Loki who was attempting to use the Tesseract to conquer Earth.[5]
  • Death Transference: After Frigga's death, she and the other fallen Asgardian warriors, were given a grand funeral ceremony and at the end Odin slammed Gungnir on the ground, and the bodies of the dead transformed into a glittering mist that flew up into the night sky.[4]

Eldritch Magic

  • Eldritch Whip: The Masters of the Mystic Arts are able to conjure fiery lines they can use as whips or lassos for combat. They constantly emit sparks, evoking a serrated appearance, and generate more force than the user normally can alone. This allows a user to effortlessly restrain and drag humans with the rope or strike someone with enough force to send them flying across a room. However, more powerful sorcerers can resist the whip's strength if it is used on them, allowing a skilled sorcerer to turn the whip's great force back on the user to effortlessly disarm them. This was evident when the Ancient One was unfazed by the Zealots that entangled her ankles with the whip, while she then proceeded to effortlessly pull those who were holding the other end of it to the ground with a tug of her leg.[7]
  • Tao Mandalas[8]: Sorcerers can use their tangible, fiery energy to form holographic Mandalas, which are religious and magical symbols. The constructs are used as energy shields or melee weapons.[7]
  • Portal Creation: Using the Sling Rings, the sorcerers are able to create fiery portals with various sizes to another location on Earth or throughout the Multiverse.[7]

Astral Dimension Magic

Dark Dimension Magic

  • Reality Warping: After performing the ritual to contact Dormammu and tap into the powers of the Dark Dimension, Kaecilius and the Zealots were able to manipulate space without being in the Mirror Dimension. This allowed them to warp and twist the landscape of the Mirror Dimension, as well as the inside of the New York Sanctum. Also, they could run on walls and ceilings, totally disregarding gravity. In addition, their momentum seemed enhanced to the point where they could easily send someone flying with their attacks, especially while defying gravity. Other feat of reality warping seems including rid the user from Time Manipulation magic as Kaecilius use this power to rid himself from Eye of Agamotto's influence to stop Doctor Strange from restoring Hong Kong Sanctum.[7]
  • Space Shard[1]: Space Shards are mystically-formed blades made of space that is warped into a glass like material. These weapons can be summoned relatively quickly from space, and just as easily dissolve back into space (causing spacial ripples that appear as crystalline projections). While they can physically interact with the physical world, they have unique properties. For example, while Doctor Strange was pierced by a Space Shard, his heart wasn't physically damaged, although the flow of blood in his heart seemed to have halted. Also, it can be noted that the Space Shard hasn't even scratched his clothes.[7]
  • Immortality: The Ancient One achieved near immortality by drawing power from the Dark Dimension to extend her life span beyond typical human terms. However, this form of immortality only suppresses the aging process, meaning that she can still be fatally injured.[7]

Eye of Agamotto

  • Time Manipulation: When the Eye of Agamotto is wielded by someone having the necessary knowledge and skills, it appears to be able to control the flow of time through the Time Stone, be it on a small or massive scale, notably to turn back something to a previous state, to accelerate its time in order to apply changes that have not happened yet, or to lock it in a time loop, resetting its state until the wielder chooses to cease its effect. Other application of time manipulation that can be performed by a highly skillful user is to put a person/object/area within time slip where reverse effect of time won't affect that person/object/area. In this way, one can revive a person who dying in violent ways by reversing the time around that person and then put the time slip influence on that person so it won't redo the way the said person dying, as seen where Doctor Strange put Wong into his time slip while using Eye of Agamotto's powers to undo Hong Kong Sanctum's destruction and as result, the reverse effects wouldn't affect him and his death was avoided.[7]

Darkhold Magic

  • Infinite Knowledge: Darkhold appears to contain infinite knowledge and it speaks to its user in their native language. Using the knowledge of the Darkhold, Joseph and Lucy Bauer have been able to build the Quantum Particle Generator to create matter out of thin air.[9] It also gave Eli Morrow the knowledge to create containment boxes capable of containing spiritual entities, and even gave him the ability to create matter with his own hands.[10] Using it seems to have a probability of causing the creation of a portal to Hell, such as when Aida's use of Project Looking Glass created one.[11][12]
  • Corruption: The Darkhold has the ability to make its user obsessed with it and corrupt anyone like it did with Joseph and Lucy Bauer.[10]

Transmutation

  • Matter Transmutation: During his meeting with Thor, Doctor Strange was able to turn a cup of tea into a mug of beer after Thor said he does not drink tea. The mug, which Thor suddenly found in his hand in the place of the tea cup, was also able to magically refill itself, much to the pleasant surprise of Thor.[7]

Demonic Magic

  • Fire Manipulation: Blaze and Reyes can generate and control fire. They can also imbue and enchant inanimate objects with their fire. They are also resistant to regular fire.[13]
  • Empathic Reading: Ghost Riders can look into someone's eyes and see into their heart and soul, to see what kind of person they truly are. They can examine their mental and emotional characteristics and qualities to determine if they are evil and in need of punishment.[13]
  • Enchantment: Ghost Riders have the ability to infuse their power into inanimate objects, such as chains, to increase their durability, and can even imbue them with their flames. They can also use this power to make their clothing and vehicles nearly indestructible.[13]
  • Superhuman Attributes: In both "demonic" and "human" form Reyes has displayed enhanced strength, above that of a normal human or Inhuman. As his demonic form, Reyes has been able to break out of a Containment Module; a feat no other enhanced individual has been able to do.[10] They seem to rapidly regenerate from injuries upon transformation.
  • Invulnerability: Ghost Riders are basically indestructible. Robbie Reyes has been shot, stabbed, run over and caught in an explosion all to no effect or injury. Meanwhile, Johnny Blaze has a gunshot hole in his skull, but this has seemingly no effect on him.[10]
  • Resurrection: Blaze was able to bring Reyes back from the dead, by making a deal that Reyes will also become Ghost Rider and seek vengeance on those who had wronged him, but also any who had hurt the innocent.[10]
  • Power Imbuing: Through mere touch, Blaze was able to transfer some of his power into Robbie Reyes allowing Reyes to also be able to transform into Ghost Rider.[10]
  • Intangibility Cancellation: In both "demonic" and "human" form Reyes has shown to be able to touch non-corporeal entities, allowing him to hold and even harm them.[15]

Hand Magic

  • Resurrection Ritual: The Hand have a secret ritual which they discovered in ancient times that enables them to resurrect the dead. Nobu Yoshioka was brought back from death after being burnt alive[16] and according to myths Elektra has heard about him, he has lived for at least three lifetimes, possibly through constant resurrection. The ritual seems to involve the use of drained blood of children and special stone sarcophagus. Elektra was seemingly resurrected after she was fatally stabbed.[17] Harold Meachum was killed and later resurrected to cure his cancer.[18]

Magic Items

Trivia

  • The reason for objects and structures with magical properties is explained by Karl Mordo as sorcerers imbuing objects with magic to take the strain sorcerers cannot, due to some magic being too powerful to sustain. Magical objects from Earth are called Relics.
  • Eli Morrow's ability to create matter via drawing energy from another dimension is strikingly akin to Magic.
