M'Kathu[1] is the leader of the Border Tribe and a member of the Wakandan Tribal Council.
Biography[]
Incoronation of T'Challa[]

As the Elder of the Border Tribe, M'Kathu attended the ceremony during which T'Challa would be crowned the new King of Wakanda. Standing alongside the other members of his tribe, notably W'Kabi, M'Kathu announced to Zuri that the Border Tribe would not challenge T'Challa for the throne.

M'Kathu then watched the duel between T'Challa and M'Baku, the leader of the Jabari Tribe who had come to claim the throne. Like the rest of the Wakandans, M'Kathu strongly encouraged T'Challa and cheered upon his victory. Later, M'Kathu took part in a Tribal Council meeting in which Okoye announced that they had intel about Ulysses Klaue, with an opportunity to capture him.[2]
Killmonger's Campaign[]

As an unidentified individual arrived in Wakanda, claiming to have killed Ulysses Klaue, M'Kathu joined an emergency Tribal Council meeting summoned by T'Challa. Like the other Elders, M'Kathu was surprised to learn that the newcomer was actually N'Jadaka, also known as Erik Killmonger and the son of late Prince N'Jobu. When N'Jadaka claimed the throne of Wakanda, M'Kathu admitted that his demands were legitimate.

As a result, M'Kathu attended the duel between T'Challa and N'Jadaka. As T'Challa was defeated and thrown down the Warrior Falls, M'Kathu was forced to pledge fealty to N'Jadaka as the new King of Wakanda. M'Kathu then attended a Tribal Council meeting in which N'Jadaka announced his intent to send Vibranium-made weapons all over the world to trigger a global revolution spearheaded by Wakanda. M'Kathu, like his fellow elders and Okoye, showed great reluctance towards this plan but had no choice but to obey Killmonger's orders.

In the end, N'Jadaka was defeated by a returning T'Challa. Though the Border Tribe sided with Killmonger during the Battle of Mount Bashenga, M'Kathu retained his seat in T'Challa's Tribal Council as he had not directly participated in the rebellion.[2]
T'Challa's Death[]
In 2024, King T'Challa fell ill. Shuri was unable to save T'Challa. M'Kathu attended the funeral.[3]
Talokanil-Wakandan War[]
Infiltration by Namor[]

A year later, a Talokanil named Namor infiltrated the border. Ramonda called a meeting among the elders. M'Kathu watched as M'Baku and Okoye traded insults. M'Baku then wanted to kill Namor. The Mining Tribe Elder talked about how they had no Black Panther anymore, so risking a war was risky. M'Baku blamed that on the council as they allowed Erik Killmonger to take the throne.[3]
Okoye's Mistake[]
Shuri and Okoye went to Cambridge to find the scientist that Namor was after. When Okoye returned without Shuri, Ramonda became worried. Once she heard Shuri was captured, Ramonda berated Okoye, stripping her of her rank as both general and Dora Milaje, which did not sit well with M'Kathu. He spoke up for Okoye, saying that she put her own spear to her husband for Wakanda. Ramonda faced M'Kathu and asked where W'Kabi was now, but in a cell where Okoye could visit him.
However, Ramonda did not have that luxury. She then pointed out how Okoye sat by as Erik Killmonger took the throne. She also forced her anger on the elders, saying they did the same as well. Okoye said she had given everything. Ramonda responded saying that she was the Queen of the most powerful nation in the world yet her entire family was gone, and that she had given everything for Wakanda.[3]

When Ramonda was killed by Namor, M'Kathu approached Okoye and talked to her. He proposed the idea that Okoye try for Queen of Wakanda as he did not believe Shuri was ready for it, especially after all of the grief that she had endured. When Okoye was not sure, M'Kathu insisted, saying that everyone supported her.[4]
The Black Panther[]

With Wakanda flooded from Namor's attack, M'Kathu and the rest of Wakanda relocated to Gorilla City. The elders argued with M'Baku until a Royal Talon Fighter appeared in the sky. A Black Panther then dropped down into the cave. The Panther removed their mask to reveal they were Shuri, who had recreated the Heart-Shaped Herb. Wakanda rejoiced as the Black Panther lived. Shuri then asked for a moment alone with M'Baku, which the elders gave.[3]
New King[]
Namor and the Talokanil soon struck a truce with Black Panther, starting a new alliance. As order returned to Wakanda, it was time for Shuri's incoronation. M'Kathu attended as always, but instead of Shuri, M'Baku challenged for the throne as Shuri left Wakanda.[3]
