Lotus Eaters is the seventh episode of the first season of the television series Cloak & Dagger.
Synopsis[]
A mysterious man may be the key for Tandy to finally clear her father’s name. Unfortunately, getting the answers she needs will be difficult as the man has been in a catatonic state for almost a decade, but it might not be so impossible for two people with extraordinary powers. With Tyrone alongside to help, the two test their combined powers for the first time.
Plot[]
A young Mina Hess takes a baked cookie out of the oven and talks to her father, Ivan Hess about his job at Roxxon Corporation before he leaves for work. He arrives at the Roxxon Gulf Platform to find that that the shielding tiles never came. Ivan angrily goes to call Nathan Bowen. The gulf's alarm then goes off. Ivan remembers this moment while in a catatonic state.
Tandy Bowen comforts Tyrone Johnson after he witnessed his friend getting shot. They decide to visit Ivan Hess in the hospital. Johnson and her access his mind and finds a door. Cloak touches the door, and they get transported inside the Gulf Platform. When inside they find a Roxxon worker who is in a state of violence. Dagger stabs him. They try to figure out how the workers can see them which they couldn't previously do. They find Hess, who happily greets them as he finally found someone who is "alive". She calls him Ivan Hess, but he has no idea who that is and says he doesn't have a name. He goes on to say they are special for having names. He then gets a call, but immediately hangs up. He says they are halfway to the end of all of reality. Bowen realizes that they are on the rig and it is going to explode. Hess says they could stop it if they get to the core room and hit the kill switch, then shut off the valves.
They go to the core room but encounter more crazed workers who attack them. The gulf then explodes, and they find themselves back with Hess, realizing they are in a loop. They try to ask Hess what happened there. He tells them that first there is an energy explosion that turns people into the crazed workers that he named Terrors. Right before another explosion, he gets a call from a man. And then there is the third explosion that restarts the loop. Bowen tries to tell Hess that he is in a catatonic state, but he just laughs it off. She tries to get him out of it by talking about his daughter, but he tells her he doesn't have one. She tells him he worked with Nathan Bowen, which he replies asking if she meant the guy on the phone. Bowen then realizes that when her father died, Hess was the one that had called him. The phone then rings, she slowly walks over to it and answers. He asks her what she is doing at the rig. She tells him she misses him, then the rig explodes. After a reset, she is left frozen in place staring at the phone waiting for her father to call once more. Johnson decides to try to shut off the valve himself. He teleports to the control room and sees the Terror explosion. The Terrors corner him, but he teleports away.
Meanwhile, the phone rings again. Bowen answers immediately and asks her father about his day. Johnson continues to fight the Terrors and teleporting away. He hits the kill switch and shuts of the valve, but the explosion still happens, meaning that the plan won't work. Bowen and Johnson decide to escape Hess' mind and think of a new plan. When back in the hospital, however, Johnson looks over to see that Bowen has tricked him, and she didn't leave. He tries to pull her hand away from Hess but is unable to. He reenters the mind.
When he sees Bowen, he finds Bowen flicking cards at a helmet, waiting for the phone to ring. He asks her where Hess went, but she doesn't know who Hess is. He asks her how long she has been there, and she replies asking him what his name is. The phone rings and she answers once again. It turns out that they have been having a continuous conversation every time the loop resets. He tries to pull her away, but she doesn't budge. She remembers his name finally, and tells him she remembers bits and pieces of her life and it is horrible. The loop resets.
He asks her again how long she has been here, she says she stopped counting after 200. When the phone rings, he tries to hang up, but she pulls her Lightforce dagger out, threatening him. When he hangs up, she throws a dagger at him, but he teleports. After another reset, she tells him to go home. He brings up his brother, telling her that he understands what she is going through, and he'd do the same thing if his brother was on the phone. He says he will leave as long as she asks her dad something that only her dad would know. The phone rings and she asks him who is in the back of his car. He tells her nobody is. She realizes this is only the father that Hess knew, not her real one. She tells him goodbye and then hangs up. When Hess walks in, Bowen sees a cookie on his desk and tells him his daughter made it for him. The phone rings, and she hangs up. Hess finally remembers and asks where she is. Bowen tells her she is in the hospital by his bed. They realize Hess has to be the one to close the valve, since it is his mind.
They help him get to the control room where he shuts off the valve right before the explosion. They wake up in the hospital and find he is out of his catatonic state, but he doesn't remember Bowen nor Johnson. He then asks where his daughter is. Mina reunites with her father. Johnson returns to his home and Bowen returns to her church. Bowen then gets a call from Johnson who asks if she wants to talk.
