Lope de Fitero was a chaplain and advisor of Pope Gregory IX, who served as Bishop of Córdoba.
Biography[]
Ambush in Córdoba[]
Lope de Fitero and Juan de Soria were told by Pope Gregory IX to welcome Ajak and Phastos who arrived at Córdoba. Ajak wanted to know about the history of Córdoba and the Reconquista, so Fitero and Soria told them the story of the siege that took place in June 29, 1236, during which Ferdinand III of Castile's forces battled the Moors to bring Christian rule to Córdoba. Fitero noted that they should have used the black powder in the siege, but Soria reminded him that they did not know how to use it. Soria then excused himself, as he had matters that needed his attention, while Fitero noticed that Ajak and Phastos were arguing about something.
Suddenly, the city was attacked by the Deviants, so Ajak and Phastos told Fitero to help the soldiers and villagers, while they stayed to deal with them. Fitero later acquired his helmet and a sword, and assisted Ajak and Phastos in the battle, forcing the Deviants to retreat. Ajak and Phastos were surprised that Fitero was not a mere advisor, but a warrior, and Fitero expressed his gratitude for saving the city from the attack. Fitero later went to speak with soldiers and villagers, without revealing anything about Ajak and Phastos' role in the battle, knowing that they would like to preserve their privacy.
A year later, Pope Gregory IX appointed Fitero as the Bishop of Diocese of Córdoba, a position that he kept until his death in 1245.[1]
