"Come on. I never totally fit in with the gang, anyway."
The subject of this article is part of an MCU franchise story that has been officially deemed to be non-canonical to the primary continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its events instead occur in another reality within the Multiverse. This universe is designated as "Mangog Unleashed".

Loki Laufeyson is a Prince of Asgard who tricked Thor into unleashing Mangog to prove himself a worthy king. When his plan to use the Casket of Ancient Winters to defeat Mangog failed, Loki rescued Thor from Vanaheim and guided him to getting Scabrite from Muspelheim to defeat Mangog. Loki helped with Mangog's defeat, although his family was aware of his trickery.

Biography[]

Planning with Ymir[]

"Well, what are you waiting for? I don't have all day."
―Loki[src]

Loki formed a plan to defeat Asgard and observed the Casket of Ancient Winters in Odin's Vault. He approached Ymir and offered the chance to infiltrate Asgard. He was approached by a group of Jötuns as he impatiently asked what they were waiting for. Ymir then emerged and agreed to help Loki defeat Asgard. Loki then told Ymir that leading Thor to the Cave of Ages would take help from others.[3]

Unleashing Mangog[]

"Thor, if you could, would you slaughter them all? Would you erase their kind from living memory?"
―Loki[src]

Loki had a sparring match with Thor and Sif, during which Loki cast an illusion of himself. Thor threw Mjølnir at the illusion, causing it to disappear. Loki asked how Thor knew he was not throwing Mjølnir at the real him, and Thor replied that Loki would never allow himself to be hurt. Sif sensed the area getting cold and voiced her concern, prompting worry from Thor and Loki. As they looked around, the area became surrounded by icicles, prompting Loki to suggest that they tell Odin and make himself disappear.

He told Odin about the attack, and left the palace with his father and a group of Einherjar. Loki watched as Thor and Odin argued about whether to retaliate against the Frost Giants, and Odin insisted that they would not. He approached Thor and told him that he knew how to turn the loos into a victory, telling Thor to meet him at the Rainbow Bridge in an hour. When Loki arrived, Thor said that he needed to get to Niflheim. Loki asked if Thor would be willing to kill all of the Frost Giants, and Thor simply said to show him how. Loki told Thor to convince Heimdall to go to Niflheim before disappearing.

Loki went to talk to Odin and explained that Sif was important to Thor. Odin told Loki that he was planning to resurrect Sif and prevent rashness from Thor, so Loki told his father that Thor would continue wage war. Odin explained that he was aware that he was mainly delaying Thor's actions, and Loki suggested that he was correct. He assured Odin that Thor would defend Asgard while Odin was in the Odinsleep. Odin cut Loki off and resurrect Sif before announcing his time to enter the Odinsleep, leaving Thor in charge. As Odin walked off, Loki said that he would do what was necessary for Asgard and for himself.

Thor then contacted Loki, telling him that he had successfully activated the Bifrost Bridge. Loki told Thor that Odin was laughing and feasting, telling Thor to use the opportunity to go to Niflheim. He said that the Frost Giants would never foresee their plan. Thor went to Niflheim, and Loki sent a projection of himself which said that it looked nice. Thor simply told Loki to point him toward the Frost Giant. Loki reminded Thor to be patient and told him to find their leader, Ymir. Thor demanded to know where he was, and Loki said that he was hidden in the ice and could see everything that happened. He told Thor that by defeating Ymir's warriors, Ymir himself would be drawn into the open.

Loki sent another projection of himself to Thor as Thor was confronted by a storm of Ymir's creation. Loki asked if Thor could stop it, and Thor explained that he could not due to its unnatural origin. Loki explained that Ymir was using the Storm Spire to focus his power, causing Thor to realize that if he destroyed the spire, the storm would go away. Loki commented that Thor could become intelligent before disappearing. As Thor entered Ymir's citadel, Loki sent a projection to tell Thor that there was a fissure beneath Ymir that led to Niflheim's core and that Ymir was the only thing stopping the heat through the fissure. Loki revealed that Thor would be exposing Niflheim to an immense amount of heat and left.

Once Thor seemingly defeated Ymir, Loki sent another projection, which Thor told that Ymir was dead. Loki said that so long as ice could form, he could not be defeated. He introduced Thor to the cave he was in, the Cave of Ages, which he said had a weapon powerful enough to melt all of Niflheim. Thor recognized the writing on the walls of being by Odin, wondering why their father would lock the weapon away. Loki suggested that Odin had lost his nerve before disappearing. Thor unleashed Mangog and called for Loki, telling him that Mangog was going to Asgard. Thor asked Loki to send him to Asgard, and Loki told him that he was going to the observatory and to wait before disappearing again.[1]

Dealing with Ulik[]

Instead of going to the Himinbjorg to help Thor, Loki went to Vanaheim to talk to Ulik, offering a chance to leave Vanaheim in exchange for him fighting Thor. Loki explained that the Vanir were trying to recreate the Bifrost Bridge, calling it Frostgrinder, saying that he could do it while the Vanir could not. Loki suggested that if he used Frostgrinder to bring Thor to Vanaheim and Ulik keep him distracted, giving Loki a chance to prove himself a better heir to the Asgardian throne. Ulik asked what would happen after, and Loki explained that he would bring Thor to face Asgard's wrath while Ulik would return home to Nornheim. Ulik agreed, and Loki activated Frostgrinder.[1]

Mangog's Attack[]

"Time to be the hero."
―Loki[src]

Loki watched as Mangog attacked Asgard, holding the Casket of Ancient Winters. He said that he would become a hero and opened the casket, attacking Mangog with it from a safe distance. Mangog was frozen, and Loki started to walk away, but Mangog unfroze himself and teleported to the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf. Loki watched, frustrated as Mangog summoned Jötuns and Infernir to attack Asgard. Loki realized that his plan failed, and that Asgard would be destroyed if he did not bring Thor back. He cast several duplicates of himself and leapt into action.

Loki went to Ulik, telling him that Thor must be allowed to return to Asgard, offering to still send Ulik to Nornheim. However, Ulik got upset with Loki for breaking there dealing, insisting that he will be the first to use Frostgrinder. Loki then left while Ulik demanded that his Frost Giants kill Thor. Once Thor defeated Ulik, Loki appeared, prompting Thor to ask where he was and what wsa happening to Asgard. Loki told Thor that Mangog opened portals for their enemies to invade, and that even Odin could not stop the creature, being weakened in the Odinsleep. Thor demanded to know why Odin was in the Odinsleep, but Loki said that it did not matter due to the invasion.

Thor told Loki that Odin created Mangog and bound it using Scabrite, prompting Loki to point out that Scabrite is only found on Muspelheim, asking if Thor would be willing to fight the Infernir on their own grounds. Thor insisted that he would, and Loki told Thor that he would find him there. When Thor got to Muspelheim, Loki appeared to him and commented on how different it was from Asgard. Thor commented that they would be similar soon unless he found Scabrite, so Loki told him that the Infernir use it in their weapons and armor. Loki told Thor that he would find pure Scabrite in the Infernal Forge, and prepared to tell him to fashion a sword from it. However, Thor cut him off and insisted that Mjølnir would be infused with Scabrite so that it could be the weapon to kill Mangog. Loki warned Thor to avoid fighting Surtur before leaving.

Loki later appear to Thor again and showed him the path to the Forge. He told Thor that he was looking for the portal the Infernir used to get to Asgard before disappearing again. He met with Thor once he reached the heart of Musphelheim and showed him the shield protecting the Forge. He told Thor that he could use the Core Drill to get through the shield before disappearing again. Thor reached the Forge, and Loki appeared again, telling him that he needs a plan. However, Thor simply said that his plan was to undo the damage he caused and save Asgard. Loki mockingly asked if he simply intended to knock on the gate, to which Thor replied that he knocks loudly. Loki agreed to Thor's plan before disappearing.[1]

Stopping Mangog[]

"A bomb? Did you stop them?"
"With what, brother? An illusion? A clever retort, a raise of an eyebrow and a withering look?"
Thor and Loki[src]

As Thor returned to Asgard, Loki appeared to him, relieved that he had returned. Thor demanded to know where Mangog was, so Loki told him that Odin was fighting it in the Althing. Thor declared his intention to help, but Loki said that he first needed to help retake the Himinbjorg, since Odin said destroying its horde would weaken Mangog. He told Thor that Heimdall and Sif were defending the observatory alone, shocking Thor as he heard that Sif was alive. Thor said that that he would help at the observatory, and Loki stated his intention to rally their defense and disappeared.

During the battle, Loki approached Thor, wanting to explain. Thor told Loki to do it later, since Asgard needing him to defended. Thor told Loki to defend his city, and Loki agreed. Loki later returned to Thor, prompting scolding from Thor. However, Loki warned Thor that the Infernir appeared to have a bomb. Thor asked if Loki stopped the bomb, but Loki said that he did not have the skills. Thor then told him to wait while he handled them bomb.

Having stopped the bomb, Thor returned, and Loki told him to destroy what he had unleashed. Thor said that they were both responsible for Mangog being unleashed, and that they could both stop it. Thor then grabbed Loki and brought him to the battlefield. Loki watched as Odin was blasted backwards and worked with Thor to attack Mangog. While Thor fought Mangog, Loki cast an illusion of himself to confuse it.

Once Thor defeated Mangog, Loki joined Odin as he told Thor that Asgard was saved by Thor's valor. He watched Thor and Odin share responsibility for the attack. Loki said that they defeated the beast together, but Odin cut him off, revealing that he knew that Loki was responsible as well. Loki, Sif, Thor, and the Einherjar watched as Odin released the Vanir from Mangog and shouted "For Asgard!" in celebration of their victory.[1]
