Leviathans[1] are cybernetically augmented creatures used for combat and troop transport by the Chitauri armies under Thanos' command.

History[]

Massacre of the Zehoberei[]

Zen-Whoberi Attack

Leviathans in Zen-Whoberi

The Leviathans, along with the Black Order and a contingent of Chitauri, followed Thanos to Zen-Whoberi. There, they successfully aided Thanos in his goal of slaughtering half of the Zehoberei population.[2]

Battle of New York[]

In 2012, the Leviathans were used by the Chitauri during their assault on Earth as both warships and assault crafts. During the Chitauri invasion, the first Leviathan that arrived in New York City was initially confronted by Iron Man, who caused it to follow him to where the rest of his team was and was destroyed by both him and Hulk.

Other Leviathans arrived from the dimensional portal and attacked New York City, but were countered and destroyed by Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk. Many more Leviathans were ready to attack; however, the Chitauri Command Center was destroyed after Iron Man diverted a nuclear cruise missile launched by S.H.I.E.L.D. through the portal. This caused every Chitauri and Leviathan to die and fall to the ground.[3]

Aftermath[]

Battle-NY-NYB

New York Bulletin newspaper

One of the Leviathans that had fallen [3] was photographed. The fall had killed hundreds of people. The photograph was used by the New York Bulletin, headlining its "Battle of NY" coverage.[4] One Leviathan that was slain by Thor and Hulk fell inside Grand Central Station. Adrian Toomes' salvage company was contracted by the city of New York to salvage the technology from its corpse, but they were interrupted and ordered to hand over all the recovered salvage by the United States Department of Damage Control.[5]

Massacre of the Korbinites[]

THPS28

Leviathans at Korbin

In 2014, Leviathans joined Thanos, Gamora, and Nebula when they invaded Korbin and slaughtered half of its population.[6]

Wanda Maximoff's Illusion[]

"Yeah... I got something bigger."
Captain America and Iron Man[src]

Following the invasion, Leviathan corpses were recovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. and were secretly stolen by HYDRA agents and placed in the HYDRA Research Base. In 2015, Baron Strucker and his scientists studied the Leviathan corpse, obtaining several components of Chitauri technology, especially the anti-gravity technology later incorporated into HYDRA Exo-Suits. When the Avengers attacked the base, Wanda Maximoff used her powers to produce a nightmarish illusion to Tony Stark that the Leviathan corpse was actually real and showed him visions of the Avengers dead and dying and the Leviathans crossing a wormhole towards Earth.[7]

Alternate Universe Versions[]

Battle of Earth[]

Leviathan (Avengers Endgame)

Alternate Leviathans arrive

In an alternate 2014 timeline, an alternate Thanos learned from Nebula of the main timeline and used reverse-engineered Pym Particles to transport himself, his weaponry, and his army, including the Leviathans, through the Multiverse using the Quantum Realm to travel into the main timeline. Thanos then summoned his army from the Sanctuary II to fight on the ruins of the Avengers Compound against the Avengers.

A Leviathan is lifted by Wanda Maximoff

Wanda Maximoff used her powers to lift a Leviathan away from Captain Marvel's path as she tried to bring the Nano Gauntlet to Luis' van. Valkyrie rode Warsong up to another Leviathan and used her weapons to scale its side.

Rocket Raccoon vs Leviathan

A Leviathan attempts to attack Rocket Raccoon

The battle concluded after Iron Man used the Infinity Stones to wipe out Thanos and his army, including the surviving Leviathans, to disintegrate. As one Leviathan made an attempt to attack Rocket Raccoon, it disintegrated right before it reached him.[6]

Characteristic Traits[]

The Leviathans are large creatures with serpentine bodies and massive teeth. They have been cladded almost completely in armor plating that is outfitted with large fin-like blades, anti-gravity devices, and grappling hooks for Chitauri passengers to rappel into battle. Some Leviathans are also outfitted with laser cannons. Much like the Chitauri, the Leviathans are linked to the Chitauri Command Center through their cybernetic implants.

Beneath their armor, Leviathans possess soft bodies that seem very frail. This can be seen when the Mark VII's well-placed missile was able to almost completely obliterate the first Leviathan's body. While it is durable, their armor proved useless against significantly powerful beings such as Hulk, Thor and Giant-Man.

Trivia[]

  • When asked about the weight of a Leviathan, The Avengers co-writer Zak Penn guessed that it weighed 3 million tons.[8]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • In concept art for The Avengers, the Leviathans are listed as "Chitauri Jumbos" because "Jumbo" was the creature's original name. However, it was decided to change it to Leviathan as "jumbo" would be too silly if it was made into a toy.[9]
