Leopold James "Leo" Fitz is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and scientist. A genius engineer, he is one of the youngest and most prominent members of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sci-Tech division, and inseparable from his research partner and friend (and later wife), Jemma Simmons. He, along with Simmons, was recruited to Phil Coulson's Team and worked with them on all of their missions. While on the team, Fitz became good friends with Grant Ward and Skye. During the HYDRA Uprising, Fitz was an active participant in hunting for John Garrett and the rest of the Centipede Project. When Ward, a HYDRA infiltrator, was ordered to kill him and Simmons, Fitz suffered brain damage due to prolonged time without oxygen after being dropped into the Atlantic Ocean.
As time progressed, Fitz's condition seemed to get better with help and support from his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. colleagues rebuilding it. Slowly regaining his skills, Fitz was able to get back into doing active field and lab work under Coulson's supervision, and played an important role in the conflicts with Robert Gonzales' S.H.I.E.L.D. faction and during the War Against the Inhumans. After Simmons was swallowed by the Monolith, Fitz studied the Monolith for months and with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s help, he went through a portal to Maveth and rescued her. Fitz helped Simmons research a way back to the planet, but their work attracted the attention of HYDRA, who forced Fitz to go back to the planet to bring the insidious Inhuman Hive back to Earth. Following the Battle of Maveth, Fitz helped S.H.I.E.L.D. in defeating Hive and his plan to disperse a pathogen that would turn a portion of humans into Primitives.
Since Jeffrey Mace's appointment as the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fitz worked with Holden Radcliffe on developing an Artificial Intelligence called Aida which was designed to serve S.H.I.E.L.D. as a decoy target. He was caught in an explosion with Coulson and Ghost Rider by Eli Morrow and was almost sent into another dimension, but managed to get out, and helped in stopping Morrow's evil plan. To Fitz's shock, Radcliffe betrayed S.H.I.E.L.D. and used Fitz's technology against S.H.I.E.L.D. Fitz was captured and his mind was connected to the virtual reality called the Framework where he lived a rewritten life as The Doctor, Aida's lover and HYDRA's ruthless second-in-command. After he created for Aida a machine to become a real person, Fitz left the Framework, traumatized from his behavior there. Shortly after, with the help of the Spirit of Vengeance, Fitz and his allies defeated Aida.
Despite having averted Aida's plan, it was at the cost of having become international fugitives, implicated for Mace's death, and the attack on Glenn Talbot. When his close friends were all abudcted by mysterious forces, Fitz was arrested U.S. Air Force General Hale, who had accused him in abetting their escape. Six months into his imprisonment however, Lance Hunter rescued him and brought him to Enoch, the one responsible for the abduction of the agents. Fitz decided to go into suspended animation for 74 years to facilitate his rescue of the team.
A few months later, the ship he and Enoch were waiting on was attacked by the Confederacy, though Fitz and Enoch escaped. The two traveled through space for about a year until Fitz arrived on Kitson via the Lazy Comet and shortly after was captured by Malachi, being brought to a Confederacy ship. Upon 'reuniting' with Simmons, Quake, Piper and James Davis, Simmons bargained for her team-mates' lives and the two were plugged into the Cerebral Fusion Machine. After a confrontation with his dark self, Fitz and Simmons escaped the ship when Enoch incapacitated the Chronicoms who were watching them, with Enoch then using an Inter-Planetary Conveyance Disc to teleport them to Earth. The trip went wrong, however, and the trio found themselves on Kitson once again. Fitz was sentenced to death as he was still wanted, but the trio was saved by Izel and brought onto her crew.
FitzSimmons took the Lazy Comet back and headed for Earth, but upon realizing Izel's true nature fled from her and her crew. Fitz escaped in a Quinjet and at long last returned to Earth following a heartfelt reunion with his team. Fitz gave the agents support from the Lighthouse when they were attacking Izel, but when Chronicom Hunters attacked the Lighthouse, Fitz and Simmons were forced to retreat. With help from Enoch, Fitz and Simmons worked on a plan to prevent the Hunters to take over the Earth. To that end, they used a fragment of the White Monolith to use all the time they needed, and also took some time for themselves to live some years of a peaceful life, during which Fitz fathered a daughter, Alya. Fitz then remained isolated while Simmons went to help the rest of the team travel through time and he would ensure their success by remaining hidden from both S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Chronicoms. Eventually, Fitz was reunited with his team after traveling between timelines through the Quantum Realm, and took part in the final victory against Sibyl. He and Simmons then retired from S.H.I.E.L.D. so they could raise their daughter and live a peaceful life.
Raised by his Mother
Leopold James Fitz was born in Scotland, United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 19, 1987. A genius-level engineer, whose only other relative is his mother, after his father, Alistair Fitz, left him at age ten.
Leo Fitz started attending the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Science and Technology, where, when he was 16, he met and would become best friends with the engineering genius, Jemma Simmons. The two were the youngest ever enrolled. However, originally the two were rivals, due to both being the smartest in their classes.
They would constantly compete with each other, never speaking to each other until they were paired together in chem lab, where they realized that together they were twice as smart. Among their instructors were Vaughn and Franklin Hall, who taught chemical kinetics during their second year.
Working with Jemma Simmons
One night, the two planned to meet together in Fitz's room, but Simmons was twenty-four minutes late due to a conversation with Professor Anne Weaver, When Simmons arrived, Fitz addressed her lateness, which he feared was because she had blown him off.
The two then awkwardly talked about each other's rooms until Simmons brought up the reason Fitz called her to his room, which was to help out with a problem he had. But, due to him trying to play cool, Fitz told Simmons that he really didn't need her help but thought it would be good to bounce ideas off her, which she interpreted as him seeing her as "thick wall". Fitz then tried to correct what he meant by saying she was good at clarifying good ideas and mapping out consequential results. That night, Fitz would feel at complete ease around Simmons.
Fitz would come to despise Simmons' boyfriend Milton, but they would eventually break up. Fitz and Simmons graduated from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy three years early in 2004. Wanting to see more than the inside of a lab, and against the advice of Professor Vaughn, Fitz was convinced Simmons to seek out a field assignment claiming it would be the perfect opportunity to see the world.
Meeting Phil Coulson
Fitz and Simmons were called in to meet with Phil Coulson, for which they were both very nervous for, as Fitz thought they were getting transferred.
As they walked up to the room, they talked amongst themselves about Coulson and the stories that they heard about him, making them more nervous, the two introduced themselves to Coulson, who was under the impression that "FitzSimmons" was one person. Coulson then went through the history, being the youngest to graduate, and an unauthorized biofuel experiment they conducted, which resulted in an explosion.
However, not only did their experiment, a new way to power a Quinjet with an algae biofuel hydrogen cell, inspire the superiors to use their design, but to also nominate them for a new S.H.I.E.L.D. operative group. Fitz was initially against going, being afraid to go into the field, but Simmons was excited and convinced him. Stationed on the Bus, the pair have designed specialized equipment and compounds on the fly in various emergency situations.
Fitz and Jemma Simmons were the first to arrive on the Bus, unloading all their equipment and bickering between each other until they were interrupted by Grant Ward, the next person on their team to arrive. Fitz enthusiastically greeted Ward before somewhat roughly taking his phone before smashing it. Phil Coulson then arrived and the team would soon begin to take off, commencing their soon to be multiple missions together.
Their first foray into the field involved the case of Michael Peterson, a man in danger of exploding due to his use of the volatile Centipede Serum. Fitz and Jemma Simmons investigated the Centipede Device and found that it was a combination of all known causes of superpowers including Chitauri technology, gamma radiation, the Super Soldier Serum, and Extremis. Meanwhile, they reproduced footage from the crime scene using the flash memory of a video camera and the audio recorded by Skye who had bugged the lab.
When Skye was kidnapped by Peterson, the team tracked them down to Union Station, trying to find a way to stop him without killing him. Fitz and Simmons eventually found a way to tranquilize Peterson without killing him and were able to give Grant Ward the Night-Night Gun before Peterson would cause an explosion from the Extremis.
Finding an 0-8-4
The team then became aware of an 0-8-4 in Peru. As Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Skye were inspecting the 0-8-4, they soon came under attack, causing them to have to escape with the Peruvian rebels only to face an armed takeover of the Bus.
Being captured and tied up by the rebels, the team worked together to take back the Bus by activating the 0-8-4, causing it to blow a hole in the side of the Bus. The team was successful in retaking the Bus and securing the old HYDRA weapon. They then decided that the 0-8-4 should be taken to the Slingshot to be destroyed. When they arrived, they watched as the rocket took off.

- ―Leo Fitz[src]
Coulson's Team received a message that a S.H.I.E.L.D. lorry transporting cargo had been attacked by a mysterious and invisible enemy. The team investigated and Jemma Simmons discovered that a rare element called Gravitonium was the cause of the attack. The team then learned that it was in fact Fitz and Simmons' former mentor, Franklin Hall, who was the cargo and he had been kidnapped by billionaire Ian Quinn.
The team was sent into rescue Hall from Quinn's island home, with Fitz, Simmons and Melinda May observing Skye as she infiltrated an event held by Quinn. They then discovered that Hall was behind him getting captured in order to destroy Quinn's compound. When Phil Coulson attempted to shut down the machine, he failed, so Simmons told him to then find a catalyst, forcing Coulson to kill him.
Searching for Akela Amador
Phil Coulson, Melinda May, and Skye investigated a robbery where a group of military officers, escorting some diamonds were taken down by one woman who did it with her eyes closed. They soon learned that the assailant was Akela Amador, Coulson's old protege. The team then went to Zloda, Belarus to search for Amador, Fitz Jemma Simmons and Skye being instructed to look for her electronically in the van.
They then began to search for Amador, until they came across a broadcast with an unusual signal containing live surveillance looking at a van, which they then realized was their van. At that moment, they were hit by a truck, knocking them into a ditch. The team then regrouped in the Bus, where they were able to continue to see the surveillance, learning that Amador was being controlled. Fitz and Simmons were able to save Amador, performing surgery on her to remove the Backscatter X-Ray Eye Implant, despite it being a challenge for both of them.
Having created the Backscatter Glasses, Fitz decided to use them for his own personal gain, getting Skye to wear them as he played Grant Ward in poker. While they played, Fitz acted confidently towards Ward, claiming that he could detect his tell which allowed him to win. He then notified Skye to use the glasses to see Ward's cards so he could win, but when she told him that in doing so she would see him naked, Fitz abandoned the plan, to Ward's confusion.
Dealing with Scorch
Phil Coulson informed the team of Chan Ho Yin, a man with pyrokinetic abilities was kidnapped. The team then observed as Skye tracked down a Rising Tide hacker responsible for Chan's disappearance in Austin, Texas. The team then learned that Skye was in contact with the hacker and warned him about them. When they confronted Skye, Fitz and Jemma Simmons went through some of Lydon's files while discussing Skye lying to them.
Back on the Bus, Fitz and Simmons continued to look through Lydon's files until they found some evidence on him selling information. They then learned that Chan was taken to a Centipede research base, which Simmons believed they were using him because his abilities would stabilize the Extremis element of the Centipede Serum. The team attempted to rescue Chan, going by "Scorch" now, but were unable to, forcing them to cause him to overheat, killing him.
Fitz continued to modify the new Night-Night Gun, but when Grant Ward inspected it, he was unsatisfied with the weight, much to Fitz's annoyance. When Ward left, Fitz mimicked Ward, which made Skye laugh. The two then talked about her being trusted by the team, and how Fitz and Simmons were connected, which was proven when she entered and also mimicked Ward.
When strange deaths started occurring where the victims' bodies were found floating with a hole in the forehead, Coulson's team was sent to investigate. While investigating a mysterious death in Wrigley, Pennsylvania, the team eventually found a connection between the victims and were able to find another man just a few minutes before he died. This man revealed that he was friends with the other victims and they had taken a Chitauri helmet during the Battle of New York, which had given them all an alien virus. The man later died and Fitz checked the team for the virus.
When the team regrouped on the Bus, it was discovered that Simmons had been infected by the virus. Fitz would help Simmons in an attempt to find a cure, and in a last ditch effort they used samples to the Chitauri helmet to produce one, however, it appeared to be fruitless. With time running out, Fitz and Simmons, overwhelmed by emotions, began to argue with each other until they eventually thought of how to make the cure. Fitz and Simmons, who was now inside the quarantine, starting working on the cure only to end up another seemingly failed attempt.
Simmons knocked out Fitz and jumped out of the plane to save the others, but when he awoke, he discovered that the cure did in fact work. Fitz attempted to go after Simmons but couldn't get the straps of the parachute on, but Ward was able to arrive and jumped after Simmons. After Simmons was administered with the cure and brought back onto the Bus, she sat with Fitz and thanked him for being by her side as they worked on the cure.
When the team had a stopover at the installation known as The Hub, Victoria Hand explained that enemy forces had obtained a weapon called the Overkill Device in Georgia, which had the power to wipe out their own missile systems and render S.H.I.E.L.D. defenseless. Hand said that Fitz was assigned infiltrate the border of South Ossetia with Grant Ward.
An inexperienced Fitz entered the assignment with Ward watching his back. They went in search of Ward's contact Uri Dubrovsky, only to learn that Dubrovsky had been killed and another group of mobsters had taken over. They were taken hostage by Marta, however, Fitz's technical knowledge came in helpful as he was able to repair the mob's television after a black-out, which earned them a safe trip to where they needed to go.
The next morning, the pair used a camouflage blanket to hitch a ride on the underbelly of a truck which brought them to the compound. Fitz disarmed, while Ward took out the guards and they discovered the Overkill Device. Fitz and Ward learned that Victoria Hand had not sent in a rescue team. Ward would try to convince Fitz to leave before the alarm was sounded but Fitz refused, proudly stating that he was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent just like Ward and just as brave as him. Fitz surprised Ward with his quick thinking, adaptability, and courage during the assignment, they managed to escape when Phil Coulson and Melinda May sent the Bus to rescue them.
Encounters with Asgard
After Thor saved the Earth from the wrath of Malekith and the Dark Elves, Fitz, along with the rest of the team and S.H.I.E.L.D., proceeded to clean up the mess the battle had left in Greenwich. Any piece of alien technology was taken and stored away with S.H.I.E.L.D., the team then found themselves in Trillemarka National Park, where a mysterious couple cut down a tree and attacked the park rangers.
Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Phil Coulson then went to visit Elliot Randolph, an expert on Norse Mythology, where he informed them that the item the couple had stolen was a piece of the Berserker Staff. After the team failed to retrieve the next piece of the staff, they when they went to retrieve the third piece, they were ambushed by Jakob Nystrom, who stabbed Randolph. The team were able to obtain the staff and defeat the couple.
Hunting a Ghost
Fitz and Jemma Simmons visited StatiCorp after its particle accelerator exploded and scanned the area, discussing the possibility of telekinesis and there time at the academy, realizing that they never got to pull any pranks on any freshmen. Fitz and Simmons were analyzing Hannah Hutchins, they noticed no irregularities in her brain waves.
Later that night, Fitz had been sleeping peacefully while Coulson, Ward, Skye, and Simmons played "Upwords" in the lounge. He silently entered the room, with shaving cream smeared across his face. He became irritated as the team laughed at his misfortune, and he demanded to know who was responsible, completely unaware of Melinda May's guilt in the prank.
Working with Mike Peterson
Fitz then did some tests on Peterson, where he learnt that the Night-Night Gun that he and Jemma Simmons designed was what stabilized him. Later, the team learnt that Centipede Project had kidnapped Ace Peterson and would trade for his father. The team decided to agree with the deal, using Simmons' Tracking Scent to locate Peterson when he is taken. However, it turned out that it was Phil Coulson that they wanted, taking him instead.
The team then began the search for Coulson, leading them to taking Vanchat, hoping he would be able to tell them the whereabouts of Coulson. As they continued to search for him, the team found themselves frustrated with Victoria Hand's priorities not being of rescuing Coulson, and having too many agents onboard making no progress, as well as removing Skye from the mission. Fitz and Simmons gave Skye a satellite phone in case of an emergency as well as informing her of how much time she had to try and locate Coulson on her own. Fitz and Simmons worked on the Night-Night Bracelet, designed to be able to neutralize people with the Centipede Serum. Fitz would witness a call with Simmons and Skye, informing them of the location of Coulson. While the rest went to find Coulson. The team were able to rescue Coulson and bring him back to the Bus.
Coulson's Team received a report of a mysterious attack at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Science and Technology. The incident involved an indoor pool instantly being frozen, with young cadets in it. The team made a visit, and Fitz and Jemma Simmons, being very well known in the academy, prepared a speech to share their experiences in the field with the students. However, in the middle of their speech, a student began to cry in panic, as his body was being slowly frozen over.
Fitz and Simmons rushed to the cadet, with Grant Ward and Skye alongside them. Simmons administered a drug to keep the boy alive, and Ward located a machine that was the source of the ice. Upon Fitz's orders, the machine was smashed, and the student, later revealed to be Donnie Gill, was saved. Gill briefly thanked Fitz and Simmons for saving him and apologized for ruining their speech. He was then escorted back to his dorm to recover.
On Ward's suggestion, Fitz visited Gill in his dorm, and the two instantly connected. Fitz admired Gill's inventions and designs and he shared stories of himself at the academy and how he did not like it there at first either. He and Gill bonded over common experiences. Eventually, Fitz took note of a power problem Gill was having. He suggested to him a solution and Gill immediately realized his problem was solved.
Fitz bid goodbye to Gill and began to head to the Boiler Room of the Academy at Simmons' request. Simmons told him distressing news over the phone, that everything was not as it seemed, and Fitz rushed back to Gill's dorm. There, he discovered an upscale version of the freezing device found earlier, and frantically warned Gill of the danger. Since Fitz had seen too much, Seth Dormer shot the engineer unconscious.
Fitz was removed from the situation and received news that Gill's weather machine had gone haywire, causing a massive storm. The team located the source, along with Gill and Dormer, and brought them on board the Bus, seeing as Dormer was injured. He had been struck by lightning, and despite Simmons' efforts, he did not survive. Fitz tried to comfort the grieving Gill but was pushed away.
The Italian Job
After the mission in France, the team found a lead to the whereabouts of the Clairvoyant through Ian Quinn. Tracking a mysterious package that Quinn acquired from Cybertek, the team went undercover and boarded the train transferring the package to Quinn's care. However, the team was jeopardized by Luca Russo, and Cybertek sent operatives to neutralize the team. In the ensuing chaos, the group was separated, and only Fitz and Skye were left to pursue Quinn.
The pair arrived at Quinn's compound, Fitz would disabled the cars of the Cybertek operatives, while Skye proceeded inside. When Fitz saw Carlo Mancini's corpse right in front of him, he realized Skye was in real danger. Fitz was soon joined by the rest of Coulson's Team, who had finally tracked down the package to Quinn's Villa. Together, they stormed the villa and took down Quinn's guards, arresting Quinn in the process, but Skye was fatally wounded.
The team brought Skye to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Trauma Zentrum, where the doctors would try to save her. After a while, the team were informed that there was too much damage and that she would only be able to stay alive on life support. With no other options, Coulson decided to try and save Skye the same way he was revived. Fitz and Simmons were instructed in analyzing Coulson's death and recovery report, to understand the medical procedures that took place.
They were boarded by John Garrett and Antoine Triplett in order to take Ian Quinn to the Fridge. Fitz and Jemma Simmons were ordered to study the Clearance Level 10 file regarding Coulson's death and recovery to learn about the actual procedures used, and to choose one that could save Skye upon arriving to Bethesda, the location where Coulson was supposedly treated after his death. However, Fitz and Simmons tried to contact Dr. Streiten, knowing that he was one of those responsible of the procedures, but the crew of the trauma center in Bethesda informed them that Streiten had gone off the grid, and the personnel and facilities that appeared in the file did not exist, at least in Bethesda.
Fitz would go with Coulson, Garrett and Grant Ward to find the doctor who brought Coulson back to live, Fitz would get teased by Garrett while he was trying to communicate with Simmons about their chances of dying horribly during the mission, telling him that he should get a better sense of humor. Fitz assisted them in breaching the bullet-proof glass before they were quickly shot at by the guards inside the base. Fitz and Coulson entered a room marked with a Biohazard Containment sign filled with different chemical compounds, and managed to locate different vials with drugs marked with the GH letters, including the GH.325. Ward arrived to inform them that they couldn't stop the bomb. Fitz was ordered by Coulson get the drug to Simmons, while he stayed behind to check a vault marked with the acronym T.A.H.I.T.I.
Fitz and Ward were told by Garrett to make sure Skye received the drug while he went to find Coulson. As Fitz approached the Bus, he communicated with the agents staying inside to take the plane off the ground to avoid the impending collapse caused by the explosion.
After Skye recovered, the team then came into learning of a strange energy reading over California. The energy readings turned out to by that of the arrival of Lady Sif, who was there to track down an escaped Asgardian, Lorelei. With Ward enthralled by Lorelei, she hijacked the Bus and also enthralled Fitz. Fitz locked Simmons and Skye in the recovery room and opened the airlock, sending Sif outside the plan. After Fitz was knocked out, they were able to defeat Lorelei.
Fitz with Simmons continued to work on uncovering exactly what the drug was in Skye's blood while the rest of the team made progress in their search for the Clairvoyant. When Melinda May discovered that they were working on the drug, she asked some questions about Coulson and Skye's behavior, to which Fitz and Simmons had nothing to comment on. Fitz witnessed as Skye became an official S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. He became upset though as Simmons was called to the Hub to be a consultant on Deathlok.
Fitz would join Phil Coulson, Melinda May, John Garrett, Grant Ward and Skye on a mission to find the Clairvoyant, the team would blast through the door. Fitz then sent his Golden Retrievers to search the place, impressing John Garrett, one of the drones located Deathlok, who would destroy it. Fitz was ordered by Coulson to return outside of the facility with Skye, as the other agents would go deeper within the facility to find where Deathlok. During the search, Coulson would ask Fitz to send a Retriever down to find Deathlok, which one would find Thomas Nash.
Fitz and Skye watched on as the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents confronted Nash, who taunted them, especially Coulson, until he brought up Skye, claiming she would eventually die, which prompted Ward to shoot him in cold blood much to the others agents' surprise. In order to communicate secretly about Simmons' findings on GH.325, Fitz put in a secret phone line. However, he found that Melinda May already had one. He told Skye about this just as it was realized that the Clairvoyant was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
- "As for you, Agent Fitz, you'll hold a very high rank, run our tech division, if you volunteer. If not, you'll have no rank and a lot of pain. Of course, either way, your services will be required."
"You're going to suffer for what you've done. And I... I plan to be a very big part of that."
- ―John Garrett and Leo Fitz[src]
Fitz told Skye about what he discovered, telling her about Melinda May's phone line. Which Skye would inform Phil Coulson, which he was interrogating Grant Ward to see if he worked for the Clairvoyant. While Coulson interrogated Ward, Fitz was being hunted by May, who was going to shoot him with an I.C.E.R.. When Coulson and Skye arrive, telling May to surrender and at gunpoint demanding answers. While Fitz, May, Skye and Coulson had a four-way argument about the phone line, the plane was rerouted to the Hub by Victoria Hand.
Coulson's Team is joined by John Garrett, who furiously questioning what had just happened although Coulson explained that they had no idea. While their plane was being forced towards the Hub, the team made the discovery that S.H.I.E.L.D. had now been infiltrated by HYDRA, and theorized that Hand was the true Clairvoyant who had been manipulating them all throughout their missions, which Garrett notes that they thought Grant Ward killing Thomas Nash had ended the recent threats of the Clairvoyant's attacks against them.
The team then discussed HYDRA, with Fitz noting that the original HYDRA, led by Red Skull was destroyed in World War II, with Garrett questioning what their motto was. Having discussed the concept that HYDRA had now indeed infiltrated their organization, Garrett recommended that they all escape the Bus while they still had a chance and live to fight another day; however, Fitz demanded that they save Jemma Simmons and Antoine Triplett who were both still at the Hub and likely in danger, so Garrett then recommended using Ward who had been locked away.
Once landed at the Hub, Fitz aided Phil Coulson, John Garrett and the team into successfully sneaking past all Hand's men, who had been ordered to open fire on the Bus's crew. With Hand's soldiers using a Pick-Lock Device to break onto the Bus, Fitz and Garrett left a small grenade behind to distract them while they made their escape. Fitz uses the Mouse Hole, the team was able to successfully get off the plane without detection, as Fitz and Garrett discussed the Mouse Hole, Garrett noted that devices like that would have been taken by top brass.
Coulson insisted Victoria Hand should first be questioned, however, Garrett mentioned Raina being subjected to the machine used on Coulson during his own capture something that Coulson had never mentioned. Coulson and his team realized the reason behind Garrett's coincidental appearance: he had led the Clairvoyant to the GH.325 drug. Fitz who was greatly upset of Garrett's betrayal, was offered a chance to work for HYDRA, which Fitz bravely refused, promising to kill Garrett himself someday soon. During the Coulson and Garrett's fight, Fitz reunited with Jemma Simmons and Antoine Triplett.
Search for Providence
Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Antoine Triplett began to repair the Bus, when the team was forced to leave the Hub by Glenn Talbot. The team had a meeting about Triplett's loyalty, after John Garrett's betrayal, but the Simmons trusted him, in which Phil Coulson agreed with her. The team were sent coordinates, believing them to be from Nick Fury, so they decided to head there. After the meeting, Fitz talked with Simmons, Fitz beginning to notice Simmons has been attract to Triplett but she let him know that things have changed.
They soon landed at the location where Coulson spoke to his team, telling them how things were, and despite their doubts, the team still followed Coulson. When they arrived at their location, they found the hidden base. When they entered, they were greeted by Eric Koenig, telling them that they were at the Providence, one of Fury's secret bases.
Saving Audrey Nathan
Grant Ward arrived at the Providence, badly injured, so Simmons performed first aid on him while he told them what had happened with John Garrett at the Fridge. Ward then claimed that he had killed Garrett in the fight. The team were then required, by Koenig, to complete a lie detector test to confirm their allegiance. When Fitz had his turn, he was asked about his family, what would he bring on an island and when he was asked about reason for being there, Fitz responded with they have to stick together and keep the people they truth close by. Fitz join Coulson, Simmons and Triplett for brief about Marcus Daniels, one of the prisoners to escape from the Fridge.
They then went to Portland to apprehend Daniels, where Coulson informed them more about Daniels and his potential target, Audrey Nathan. Simmons and and Triplett then arrived at Nathan's location, rescuing her from Daniels, while Fitz and Coulson tried to take down Daniels by exposing him to more light energy that he could absorb, a technique Coulson had used to arrest him in the first place. However, Daniels was more powerful than before and knocked off Coulson and Fitz before running away.
Since conventional means were inefficient, Fitz tried to find another plan to capture Daniels. He suggested to use Nathan as a bait to lure Daniels into the Outdoor Theater, where S.H.I.E.L.D. would await him and be ready to use powerful Gamma Power Reserve retrieved from their Jump Jet. At first, Coulson refused, claiming that he could not afford to put his former lover in danger, but Fitz insisted and noticed that Nathan was already in jeopardy.
Fitz, Simmons and Triplett used their Gamma Power Reserves, when Daniels got close. Although Daniels was affected, he managed to withstand the assault and took down the three S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, prompting Coulson to intervene. As Daniels was closing up to Nathan, Coulson and Triplett activated the Gamma Power Reserves once again. Although Daniels nearly reached Coulson with a spread of Darkforce, he was overpowered by the energy radiations and his body exploded, putting an end to the threat. The team then returned to find the Bus and the others gone.
Grant Ward's Betrayal
With some of their team missing, they began to search for them using the security footage, which were all erased, except for one showing the Bus. They saw Melinda May leave as well as Grant Ward and Skye later on. Fitz discussing with Jemma Simmons, about making pancakes. When Fitz would go in Eric Koenig's office, when he found Skye's message that "Ward is HYDRA". They focused on locating Skye, who they realized was playing Ward. The team then were alerted of an incoming threat, which turned out to be a group of special forces, led by Colonel Glenn Talbot, who were informed of the bases location by Maria Hill.
Fitz, Simmons and Triplett debated with Talbot, trying to tell him that they were not HYDRA, but it got them nowhere. Coulson and Hill then regrouped with them, and they all went to leave to find Skye. The team then went to a hotel in Los Angeles where Simmons and Fitz discussed Ward's betrayal, and the two reassured each other that they were not HYDRA. Coulson then decided that the team should take the night off and just relax after everything they have been through.
The next morning, while watching the news, Fitz with the team wondered why Deathlok killed Alejandro Castillo. Coulson then recapped everything they had gone through: Centipede Serum, Ian Quinn, the Clairvoyant, GH.325 and how it was all connected to Cybertek. The team then discussed a way to destroy everything the was on Skye's hard drive, infiltrating the Cybertek Corporate Headquarters. After Antoine Triplett obtained some of his grandfather's Howling Commando Gear, the team prepared to go to Palo Alto. As Coulson and May pretended to be former S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists to stall for Fitz, Skye and Simmons provided them with what they needed to say to seem convincing.
The team were able to retrieve the some files on Deathlok and made their escape. They then went through all the files and realized Garrett's plan was to heal himself and then create an army. The team then headed to Havana, Cuba, learning that Garrett would be there. Fitz and Simmons found the Bus and informed Coulson, who ordered her to not engage. Simmons had the idea to plant of the the D.W.A.R.F.s on the Bus so they could track it, but before they could, Grant Ward captured them and took them aboard. Fitz activated an EMP Joy Buzzer that fatally wounded Garrett, but as the two tried to hide in a Medical Pod, Ward cornered them and ejected them off the Bus into the Atlantic Ocean.
Confession to Jemma Simmons
Fitz would inform Simmons that they had sunk to the bottom of the ocean and that he had broken his arm. When Simmons tried to suggest how to get out of there, Fitz told her that there isn't a lot of hope, even though he sent out a signal, as with the dissolving of S.H.I.E.L.D., no one would be listening. Fitz then came to the realization that they were going to die down there. The two then began to discuss what death would be like, providing comfort for each other.
The two argued over who should take it, as Simmons has the idea of breaking the glass without the water pressure crushing them. Fitz would reveal his true feelings for Simmons, which Simmons overwhelmed with emotions, embraced Fitz and tried to get him to think of another way, but he pushed the button, breaking the glass, forcing Simmons to take the last burst of air.
However, Fitz is rescued by Simmons, who was able to take him. They were then rescued by Nick Fury, who received the distress call. Fury informed Simmons when she wrote up that Fitz was still alive and she told him of where to find Coulson. Fitz would have brain damage from oxygen deprivation and would later fall into a coma due to and was not be the same, due to his injury.
Imagining Jemma Simmons
It took nine days for Fitz to awaken from his coma, but months later Fitz still experienced damage to parts of his brain that still had not healed. The brain injury made it difficult for Fitz to complete tasks that used to come easy to him and gave him aphasia, which made communicating to other members of the team much more difficult for him. Jemma Simmons left Fitz and the rest of the team to go undercover within HYDRA for S.H.I.E.L.D. after Simmons had left, he started to imagine she was still with him and had conversations with his hallucination of her. Eventually, Fitz realized that Simmons had left but continued to have the hallucinations.
During Coulson interrogating Glenn Talbot, Fitz would watch the interrogating on the screen feeling jealous of Billy Koenig. Fitz started to have a conversation with imagine Simmons, feeling self-conscious that the others are rushing him to get the cloaking technology finished. Fitz would have a hard time to express his feeling, as he would say that imagine Simmons, is the way that he is feeling better.
Fitz was tasked by Phil Coulson to build cloaking technology for the Bus, this well be used for the agents could travel unimpeded from Talbot and the United States government. Fitz was incapable to go on a mission by, with Melinda May, Antoine Triplett, Skye, Lance Hunter and Isabelle Hartley to steal a Quinjet. Fitz would continue to work on the cloaking technology, while Coulson, Koenig and Alphonso Mackenzie watched him, revealing that Fitz is getting worst without Simmons but his side.
When Skye and Antoine Triplett returned to the Playground with a Quinjet, they would meet up with Alphonso Mackenzie, as the was talking about cloaking technology, Fitz walked in and would try to help them by due to his trouble of speaking, he couldn't get his words out.
Fitz was able to recognize the designs he had previously done on the Overkill Device as a way to disrupt Carl Creel's powers and cause him to overload. With the help of Alphonso Mackenzie, who took his time to help Fitz explain his thoughts, he was able to modify it in order to stop Creel, which Coulson used to save Lance Hunter which turned him stone and would arrest him. This cooperation started a friendship and strong trust between the two as Mackenzie was the only person who was really able to listen and took the time to speak to Fitz.
Discovering Grant Ward
Fitz joined a team meeting with Phil Coulson and the field agents, where they discussed Donnie Gill being hunted by HYDRA. During the meeting, Coulson asked if Fitz know where he could be, since that Fitz knew from the mission at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, which Fitz with the help of Mackenzie said that the last time Fitz saw Gill he had trouble making friends, which Coulson said the the two agents to information him if they hear something. Coulson would put Melinda May in charge of finding Gill, which Fitz interrupt saying where's Skye, which May responded she working another angle.
When the team was leaving to find Gill, Fitz and Alphonso Mackenzie would watch them leave to find Donnie Gill, which Mackenzie suggested to Fitz that since the team have left for a mission that they should have the night off and go and play some Xbox with each other. Fitz was still unhappy with the decision, of not going to Morocco and try and stop Gill with the others. Which causes Fitz to continue questioning Phil Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s decisions, thinking they are keeping secrets from him. Mackenzie responded with, that they are protecting him from death and to not be paranoid.
Fitz still upset that he was not leaving for Morocco with the others, would go to where Skye was working her important angle. When the imaginary Simmons appears, trying to stop him, which he would listen. He went to the Vault D and discovered that it held Grant Ward, who was happy to see Fitz again. Ward attempted to convince Fitz that he did not want to kill Fitz and Simmons, so he instead ejected their pod into the ocean to give them "a fighting chance" at survival.
Fitz then revealed to Ward how brain damaged he was and that he now felt useless to his team, who he revealed was now in Morocco to look for Gill. Fitz slowly lowered the oxygen level of the cell to show Ward what he experienced. Suffocating, Ward told Fitz of how HYDRA brainwashed some of its members, including Gill, who had taken over the Sandbox while brainwashed. Fitz, with extreme difficulty due to his aphasia, was able to communicate this knowledge to Mack, and the two informed Coulson about this. When Coulson asked how Fitz knew this, Fitz admitted that Ward told him.
Coulson met with Fitz privately after this incident and expressed his regrets that he still had Ward at the base. Coulson told Fitz that he has been monitoring his progress, telling him that he's an improve part of the team, and he watched what Fitz done to Ward. Which Fitz responded, which he not a killed. Fitz asked if Coulson was hiding any other secrets from him, to which Coulson replied that as director of S.H.I.E.L.D., there were a lot of things that he was not telling Fitz, but he added that this was not just to Fitz. He also let Fitz know that Simmons left S.H.I.E.L.D. upon Coulson's request.
Bonding with the Others
- "Fitz, this team wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. This is big. Let me buy you a beer, mate. We haven't gotten to work together much yet but I thought this was a successful mission. And if we keep up with this teamwork, there will be more successful missions... and plenty more beer, plenty more–"
"Yeah, hey, so, um, I don’t have an ex. But there was this girl that I like and I told her how I felt but she doesn't feel the same way as I do, so she left."
- ―Lance Hunter and Leo Fitz[src]
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents took the Bus to Florida, due to Phil Coulson wanting a painting that had the Words of Creation inscribed on its back. While the others were bonding, discussing past relationships and love interests, Fitz kept his distance from the others, being hesitant about his feeling that the others did not want to be around him since he had trouble speaking. His hallucination of Jemma Simmons kept trying to encourage him to join in with the conversation, but he refused, saying he doesn't feel like talking.
Fitz would go to their old lab, when hallucination of Simmons would try and encourage him to be more involved with the team. Fitz believed that the others have more conversation with Ward more than they did to him, feeling that the others found Ward more useful. Then Agent 33 who is disguised as Melinda May, entering the Bus asking for Coulson and planted a virus which disrupted the electrical systems.
Fitz, still keeping his distance from everyone, was still being encouraged by his subconscious to go and help the others. When all of a sudden, the Bus had been sabotaged by a virus that would explode the plane. Fitz would explain to the others that if the virus continued the plane would explode. Fitz and Lance Hunter went to a section of the plane that was not yet affected. Fitz explained that he needed Hunter's hands, since his were not steady, to halt the cascading effect. Together, they rewired the section and stopped the virus.
Later, Hunter brought some alcohol to celebrate a successful mission. After prodding from Hunter, who wanted to thank Fitz for saving their lives, Fitz decided to participate and began talking about a girl, without saying that it was Simmons, not returning his feelings and leaving him. Alphonso Mackenzie and Hunter said he was better off without her and toasted to "moving on."
Uneasy Reunion with Jemma Simmons
- "I am different. And I... And I'm... I'm trying not to be, but I am. And if for some reason you can't accept it..."
"Oh, that's not fair. Fitz, I'm only trying to help."
"You left. I needed help. I needed help with the cloaking. I needed help with... um... With lots of other things, and someone to talk through, at least. You gave up on me."
- ―Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons[src]
Fitz and his imaginary Simmons, would discuss Alphonso Mackenzie, where Fitz brought up that Simmons wasn't real. This would cause Fitz's subconscious to congratulate, telling him that it's a good thing and that he doesn't need his subconscious since he has real friends. Fitz is still hesitant, saying that he still misses Simmons, which his subconscious responds with he should move on like she did, before his subconscious disappeared.
Not too long after Fitz let's go of his subconscious, he was met with the real Jemma Simmons, which at first he thought that his subconscious vision of Simmons returned. Fitz would realize that it was the real Simmons, who returned from her undercover mission with HYDRA with the help from Bobbi Morse. Fitz how feeling awkward knowing that it's the real Simmons, greeted her with hesitancy due to her leaving without saying goodbye.
Fitz is asked by Simmons for help in accessing the hard drive, Simmons told Fitz that the hard drive was damaged, during her escape from HYDRA Laboratories. Fitz and Simmons had a brief argument between them due to Fitz's situation of having trouble speaking, Fitz would bring up Simmons leaving when he needed her the most, bring up he needed her help with the cloaking device and someone to talk to. Fitz continued the argument, saying that Simmons laid to him saying she was visiting her parents. Simmons would leave the lap, when Alphonso Mackenzie arrived.
Fitz and Mackenzie discover the Vincent Beckers, the grandfather of the Belgian Foreign Minister, Julien Beckers, when Simmons returned with tea. The two would tell Simmons, that in the 1940s a HYDRA agent who worked for the Red Skull developed a weapon. When Mackenzie and Simmons spoke of Fitz's predicament, he pointed to her as the cause of his trouble to which she cited as the reason why she had left. After the mission, Fitz would witness Grant Ward being transfer to his brother, Christian Ward.
Fitz and Alphonso Mackenzie went and retrieve the body of Janice Robbins so Jemma Simmons could perform an autopsy, both Fitz and Mackenzie jokingly told Phil Coulson and Skye, how they got the body. Which Simmons disagreed with the words of bravado that Mackenzie told Fitz. Before the autopsy started, Simmons asked if anyone wanted to leave, which Fitz, Mackenzie and Skye put their hands up.
Fitz and Mackenzie watched as Skye and Simmons pugged Coulson within the Theta Brain-Wave Frequency Machine, Mackenzie would question why they would use the machine. Fitz would explain, that Raina used the machine on Coulson due to him losing him memories after Project T.A.H.I.T.I.. Fitz and Mackenzie were told by Skye to hold Coulson down if he started acting erratically. Fitz then asked how much more Coulson can take, his Skye and Simmons said they must him the names of the T.A.H.I.T.I. test subjects. Fitz and Mackenzie had to hold down Coulson after the session ended, which Coulson revealed that Sebastian Derik is the one killing the test subjects.
After the experience, Fitz would join and watch Mackenzie play Halo on the Xbox. The two, would talk about the experience, with Fitz saying that it wasn't Coulson failed. Which Fitz explained that Coulson's memories was replace thanks to S.H.I.E.L.D., after the T.A.H.I.T.I. Project. Mackenzie would give Fitz the controller, telling him that it would help him with his hand-eye coordination. During playing the game, Simmons arrived asking if they since Skye. Which she would find her, locked in the same prison that Grant Ward was kept in. The three would release her, as she would tell them that Coulson is going after Hank Thompson.
Later, Fitz was among the senior S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were assembled as Director Coulson gave the new mission, find the city that matched, which Coulson found during his duel with Sebastian Derik and the Words of Creation must find it before HYDRA does.
Fitz accompanied Phil Coulson, Skye and Antoine Triplett to Hawaii, Fitz who wanted to get back in the field, is ordered by Coulson to practice on the Bus rebuilding a transceiver repetitively until he can do it under six minutes. Fitz admitted that he had only one fully functional hand, which Coulson responded with rely on muscle memory.
Fitz would start to rebuild the transceiver, which him eleven minutes. Get frustrated, he would repeat the process again, before Skye and Triplett tells him to take a break. Fitz explained to them that Coulson, gave him the task of rebuilding a transceiver under six minutes. Fitz and Triplett discuss Coulson, with Triplett telling Fitz that Coulson is the anchor of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Coulson would informed the team, that there next stop is Laura Creek, Australia. Coulson reminded Fitz, that he needs to complete his task under six minutes, saying that he can do it.
Fitz and the team arrive in Australia, Fitz would go with Coulson and Triplett to infiltrate a laboratory that housed a powerful satellite receiving station. Fitz have to install the transceiver so that the city matching the Words of Creation could be found. Fitz admitted to Coulson that he was able to do the job in under seven and half minutes, which Coulson told him that wasn't good enough, Fitz would reply with that time is with just one hand. Fitz revealed that with both his hands, he would be able to do the job within the time limit, signifying his progress. When the team arrived at the station, they were attacked by HYDRA, during their escape Triplett is shot and bleeding out.
All of a sudden, Calvin Zabo arrived saying that he can help with Triplett's injury. During the surgery, Zabo admitted that he knows Coulson, threatening him by say he will kill Triplett if he shoots him. Zabo told both Coulson and Fitz, to hand their guns. Zabo would tell, the two how to save Triplett. As he fled, Coulson and Fitz gave Triplett the blood clotting agents needed to stop him from bleeding to death. When Fitz and Coulson return to the Bus, they was going to tell Skye about her father, which they was able to find a match.
Destroying the Kree City
When returning to the Playground, Fitz would find a radio-controlled miniature version of Lola controlled by Alphonso Mackenzie. Fitz asking Mackenzie, if the toy could fly, asked Mackenzie to talk to Jemma Simmons for him. Mackenzie would tell him that he needs to talk to her sooner or later. This would cause, Fitz to walk away.
Fitz along with Bobbi Morse, Mackenzie and Simmons accompany Phil Coulson to Puerto Rico, to destroy the city that matched the Words of Creation. When the team arrived, Fitz and Simmons worked in silence, before Mackenzie would leave them alone so they could talk. Simmons tearfully tried to tell Fitz why she left and went undercover months ago, Fitz interrupted her by saying that he could not work with her anymore. Simmons misinterpreted his statement and asked if he was quitting S.H.I.E.L.D., Fitz told her that he thought it best for him to work for her, making her leader of the science team.
Inside Castillo San Cristóbal, Fitz and Simmons prepared the D.W.A.R.F.s to test the structural integrity of the city, so when it was destroyed, it would not affect the residents of San Juan. When the drones lost power after entering a hundred foot shaft, Mack went down to investigate. Hearing his screams, the others hoisted him up and watched as he slapped Coulson across the room. Fitz gave Coulson an I.C.E.R. to stop the attack of the super-strong mechanic, but it was ineffective. Fitz now holding a gun, pleaded with his friend to stop his assault, while Coulson, attempting to keep Simmons from falling into the shaft, ordered him to fire. He did not because Morse electrocuted Mackenzie and he fell stunned into the shaft. They then returned to the Bus, where Fitz and Simmons discussed the possibility of Mackenzie being alive, which Simmons believed could be due to a zombie-like influence over him.
When the team planned to go back to the city, Fitz and Simmons provided containment suits, believing it will protect them from anything down there. Fitz and Simmons along with Antoine Triplett, in containment suits, then went down to the Kree City to plant explosives and to see if Mackenzie survived. However, it was taking too long for them to plant all the bombs, so Fitz decided that they split up. When Fitz set his bomb, he would reunited with Simmons and Triplett, with ten minutes to spare. However, when they discovered that Skye and Coulson were in the city, Triplett ran off to defuse the bombs. An earthquake occurred as he waited with Simmons, and they hugged in panic as the island shook, causing rubble to fall around them.
Returning from the Kree City, Fitz would help Alphonso Mackenzie with his work in the garage. Fitz started working on repairing and analyzing Skye's heart monitor to get a biological replay of what happened to her. Fitz asked Mackenzie to share his feeling about his experiences as a thrall of the Kree City, Mackenzie snapped at Fitz, claiming that he could not understand the feeling of having his body betray him. Fitz calmly stated that he could due to his own brain damage.
Fitz approached Skye while she in quarantine, Fitz started questioning the data he learned from Skye's heart monitor, Fitz mentioned that her heart rate was "inhuman", as well as how she was unaffected by the earthquake. Fitz realized that she was the epicenter, this would cause Skye to panic and cause the lamp in her room to explode. Due to this, Fitz would run away.
Fitz returned to see Skye, when Melinda May and Jemma Simmons saw that bleeding, As Skye was about to admit that she had changed, Fitz interrupted and showed them Skye's blood test, which he had changed the results to have it show that Skye was normal. When Simmons and May left, Fitz cleaned Skye's wound, explaining that until everyone has calmed down from their traumatic experiences, especially Simmons, it was a secret between the two of them. This caused, Skye to get upset and hugged Fitz, telling her that there was nothing wrong with being different. Later, Fitz attended the vigil of Antoine Triplett, as each of the agents would tell there best Triplett story.
While continuing the search for Raina, S.H.I.E.L.D. took notice of Lady Sif, who had appeared in Portugal with no recollection of her past or why she was on Earth. They discovered that Sif had fought an unknown man who wiped her memory with a hammer-like device. Following a confrontation with the man, Skye began to fear more that control over her abilities was wavering. She confided in Fitz, thinking that telling Phil Coulson about her new ability would be best; Fitz revealed that he was talking to hallucinations of Jemma Simmons for months. When Skye stared at Fitz, he told her that that feeling would be how the others would treat her. He then attempted to ease her mind, though they were interrupted by Lance Hunter.
Upon locating the man, who was revealed to be a Kree by the name of Vin-Tak, and bringing him in for questioning, the Kree restored Sif's memory and explained that he had come to Earth after being alerted to Raina's activation of a Diviner. Fitz and Simmons opened a crate Vin-Tak unearthed that supposedly had more Diviners, during which Fitz had inadvertently left his test results of Skye's blood out for Simmons to see. He attempted to explain that they were just fake results he created, however, Simmons was not completely convinced.
Meanwhile, Vin-Tak explained the purpose of the Diviners, and the Kree's role in the creation of the Inhumans. Realizing that she was in fact one of these people, Skye began to panic and lost control of her powers, exposing them to her friends. Both Sif and Vin-Tak were ready to strike down Skye in order to stop her supposed threat, but Fitz, having overheard, was quick to come to Skye's defense, furious at their suggestion of murdering her. Both Coulson and May defended Skye as well and attempted to get her to safety. Coulson told Fitz to get "Bambino." While running, he came across Alphonso Mackenzie and Bobbi Morse, and urged them to help stop the Kree. Mack, and later Hunter, were quickly defeated; but Morse managed to keep Vin-Tak busy enough for Fitz to locate the Destroyer Armor Prototype Gun. The blast stunned Vin-Tak long enough for Morse to erase his memory with his own weapon.
Later, Fitz apologized to Simmons for not telling the truth, though at the same time, he defended his choice, due to his belief that the others would have turned against Skye. The others, furious that he lied to them, essentially proved to him that his fears were correct, with Mackenzie stating they needed to be kept safe from Skye. Skye overheard the exchange, but would not stop to talk when Fitz chased after her, instead she retreated to the Bus.
- "Fitz, you don't have to put a positive spin on this."
"I'm not doing that. I would never patronize you. Well, the... things change. That's what I'm saying. So maybe if you can learn to control this, then... you could have Avengers-level powers. Something like Captain America, even."
- ―Skye and Leo Fitz[src]
Fitz observed a conversation, between Melinda May and Andrew Garner learning that May and Garner were married. Fitz wanting to get some food, seeing May laughing and smiling with Garner. He chose not to interrupt and traveled to where Simmons was working to heat his food. He told Jemma Simmons why he was there and how May was acting. This sparked a friendly conversation between them, speculating on Garner's and May's relationship. Before their conversation could continue, they was interrupted by an outburst from Skye.
Fitz observed Jemma Simmons checked over Skye's injuries, as Fitz tells Skye that her powers could be on the same level as Captain America. Which Simmons, reminds him that Skye's powers are still unstandable, comparing her powers to the Hulk. Which Fitz responded, with that he saved the world the last time he checked. During the argument, Skye started to have another outburst. Causing Fitz and Simmons, too apologies.
Fitz seeing Phil Coulson return, from putting Skye in Nick Fury's old safe houses. He would ask Coulson, where's Skye, which Coulson would tell him. This causes Fitz to respond, with that he put her in a prison, Coulson tells him that Skye is safe before walking away. Fitz would ask Simmons, what she gave Coulson and how it was related to Skye. Fitz argued that Simmons was the one who had changed because she became closed-minded.
Fitz sarcastically asked Jemma Simmons how her science experiment was going after she communicated with Skye at the Retreat. Fitz was asked by Phil Coulson to determine what the extra mechanism was that Alphonso Mackenzie had within the toy replica of Lola that Coulson had kept in his office. During the blackout caused from Bobbi Morse's EMP, Fitz was found by Melinda May. The two found Coulson and all compared notes, Morse stole the Toolbox and Mackenzie was on the run. Fitz told Coulson that Mackenzie had to be found as he went to secure the Playground.
Inside a maintenance closet, Fitz found a strange gadget. As he was investigating, he was approached by Mackenzie. Fitz is told by Mackenzie, that he not there to hurt him and would never do so, but he wanted Fitz to leave that closet. Fitz managed to grab a weapon to defend himself. However, he did not realize that Mackenzie was trying to protect Fitz from the gadget. Fitz is quickly grabbed by Mackenzie and fell upon him as the gadget exploded, allowing agents loyal to Robert Gonzales to enter.
Fitz would recover and find Simmons, As Gonzales agents stormed the base. The two silently reconciled with each other by holding hands and tried. They were confronted by Anne Weaver, who approached the two agents. Weaver asked Simmons to help diagnose Mackenzie's wounds. Fitz would approve, allowing Simmons to go with Weaver to attend Mackenzie's wounds.
- "Fitz, you're amazing. Can we meet up?"
"Uh... I'm being followed. They won't grab me. I think they're hoping I'll lead them to you first. The thing is, would it still be okay if I came and hung out with you? Maybe you could show me how to shake a tail. Maybe you could start, like, now?"
- ―Phil Coulson and Leo Fitz[src]
Fitz and Jemma Simmons discussed the Toolbox before being interrupted by Robert Gonzales and Bobbi Morse. Gonzales expressed interest in recruiting with Fitz and Simmons, every since the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, but Phil Coulson recruited them first. Gonzales asked Fitz for his help to opening Nick Fury's Toolbox, which caused Simmons to ask what would happen if he refused. Morse inform the two agents that he may leave after he was evaluated and debriefed, which Fitz told them that he is leaving to collect his belongings.
Fitz would beginning packing his belongings, as he is approached by Alphonso Mackenzie. Mackenzie tired to appeal to him by calling him his nickname "Turbo", Fitz who is feeling betrayed from Mackenzie's actions, pointing out that his friend Mackenzie would call him that. Fitz is told by Mackenzie, that he would always be his friend and try to convince him not to leave, which Fitz continues to refuse. Mackenzie revealed that Simmons is working to open the Toolbox using Coulson's DNA. Fitz, now horrified that Simmons might have joined Gonzales's team, this would cause Fitz to begin an investigating, he would go to the Holocom, learn what Simmons is doing.
Fitz would head to Simmons' laboratory, confronting her about her betray too Coulson. Fitz then grabbed the Toolbox, which caused a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to take aim at him until he put the Toolbox down. Fitz pitied Simmons for her betrayal and their lack of trust in Coulson. Fitz would then realize, that Simmons wanted him to leave along and Simmons admitted that he felt that if they could not work together to unlock the Toolbox, it would probably best that he do so. He then left with Simmons giving him one of his bags.
Fitz would leave the Playground, and take a taxi cab to the airpot. Fitz looked inside his bag finding the Toolbox, in his sandwich bag which Simmons gave to him before he left. Along with the Toolbox, is Fitz's favorite sandwich which he smelt with delight as he now knew that Simmons had not betrayed him and Coulson, but was instead distracting Gonzales with a fake Toolbox.
However, Fitz now on the run, found out that Gonzales sent his men to track him under the hopes that he would lead them to Coulson. Fitz took the Toolbox to a diner, where he opened it in the diner's restroom, ignoring the knocks on the door from other customers. He accessed Coulson's tablet from the box and contacted him and Lance Hunter, who were both shocked and surprised to see him. However, other patrons, who were in fact Gonzales' agents in disguise, began to become impatient and continued to bang on the door. Fitz asked Hunter for advice on finding a way out, and Hunter began describing an escape method.
Working with Grant Ward
Fitz, now being followed by Gonzales' men, would start running to a roof of a building. Where he was pick up, by Phil Coulson, Lance Hunter, and Michael Peterson, whom Fitz asked about his upgrades. Fitz gave Coulson the Toolbox and was briefed on their mission, Coulson explained that Skye had been taken by a teleporter and their only chance of finding her was to question HYDRA's current leader Baron Wolfgang von Strucker and Doctor List. When finding out that they would have to work with an enemy, Fitz agreed to it right away. However, upon hearing that they would be working with Grant Ward, much to Fitz's horror.
Fitz would stress his concern about working with Ward, which Hunter pointed out that their jobs sometimes required them to work with people whom they despised, comparing the situation to his own frustration with working with Bobbi Morse again. When Coulson and Deathlok brought in Ward and Agent 33, whom Ward had started dating, Fitz sat on an opposing side of the Quinjet, fingering his gun while Hunter tried to keep him calm. When Ward asked how Fitz was doing, Fitz lost his temper and leaped from his seat at him only to be held back by Coulson and Hunter. Once he had expressed his belief that Ward would betray them the first chance he got, Fitz calmed down, but still refused to answer Ward's question.
When a brainwashed Sunil Bakshi set up a meeting with List, Fitz watched through Deathlok's eyes with the others. Bakshi offered up Deathlok as incentive, causing the Quinjet to erupt into violence, and Agent 33 held a knife to Fitz's throat. As the standoff continued, Fitz was the only one who noticed that Deathlok was targeting everyone in the HYDRA meeting. He told the others, and the standoff ended. Fitz told Deathlok to play along. Later, when the rest of the team followed List to a building in Milwaukee, Fitz stayed behind in the Quinjet as backup while everyone else entered the building.
The mission failed, resulting in Skye and Calvin Zabo once again disappearing with the teleporter, during the battle Deathlok was captured by HYDRA and Hunter was wounded. As a result Coulson turned himself into Robert Gonzales and the two worked out an arrangement to stop HYDRA. Coulson had Fitz, Hunter, Ward, and Agent 33 board the plane and fly back to the Playground. As they were doing so, Fitz talked briefly with Hunter, asking him about his wounds. Hunter replied that he was in more pain from seeing Ward and Agent 33 talking to each other like a couple.
When Fitz returned to the Playground, he would go and speak to Jemma Simmons about Grant Ward. Fitz told her about his attempt to kill him, which she seem impressed. Simmons came up with the idea, of killing Ward with a Splinter Bomb, but Fitz express concern about her due to her being serious. Fitz would accompany Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Simmons and Ward on a mission to the Arctic HYDRA Research Facility to rescue Mike Peterson and Lincoln Campbell, from HYDRA.
The team, boarded the Bus where they heard a loud noise, which was revealed to be Skye, who had been teleported to assist them with the mission and to rescue her friend, Lincoln Campbell. Fitz and Simmons would catch up with Skye about where she been staying. Coulson would as the team to gather around, as Ward gives the intel on Sunil Bakshi. Ward began, but started to explain his actions during the time it had been revealed he was a HYDRA agent. Ward asked for the team's forgiveness, but nobody gave it. Near the base, HYDRA spotted the Bus' location and sent missiles to shoot it down, but the team escaped with a Quinjet and entered the base.
After the team sacrificed the Bus to get into List's base, Fitz went with Coulson and May to break into the missiles system and gather information about HYDRA, while Simmons went with Skye, Ward, and Bakshi to save Deathlok and Campbell. After Fitz succeed in his mission and the abducted were saved, the team returned to the Playground and the base was destroyed. He and Simmons talked with Deathlok and said to him that there was facility which had the equipment to repair his dismantled leg.
Robert Gonzales' Death
Fitz and Jemma Simmons looked at Skye, as she sat near the anesthetized Lincoln Campbell. Then, they informed Kara Palamas that the brainwashing of HYDRA was not affecting her reactions anymore. Palamas thanked them but then the light of the building turned on and off, as Campbell awoke from his coma. After S.H.I.E.L.D. located the Inhumans' base, Afterlife, Fitz and Simmons were with Skye and said their goodbyes before she returned to the base as a part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s plan reaching an agreement with the Inhumans with their leader, Jiaying, who was also Skye's mother, and putting them in the Index. Before Simmons went to Afterlife as the agent-in-charge of the Index process, Fitz talked with her and admitted that he had wanted to kill Grant Ward but was unable to do it and was glad that he did not become a murderer. He was also glad that Simmons did not kill Ward either, but Simmons admitted that she had indeed tried to kill him.
Fitz was in Coulson's office along with Coulson and Lance Hunter while S.H.I.E.L.D. was on the way to meet the Inhumans. Hunter doubted Coulson's decision of sending Robert Gonzales to meet Jiaying and not him. Even Fitz questioned the council's decision, but Coulson said to him that it was not the council versus them anymore and they were right about their decision. He said that he had not always made the right call, especially where it had came to Skye, and if they did not trust the council, S.H.I.E.L.D. would fall again. Hunter joked that S.H.I.E.L.D. would fall again if a dozen enhanced people will bring terror on them, to which Fitz agreed. Coulson then said that he thought that they had spent too much time together. Just then, Melinda May informed them that the Inhumans turned over Calvin Zabo, to which Coulson said that they will deal with this when they had returned to the base.
Finding Bobbi Morse
After a while, Melinda May talked with Phil Coulson, saying that Bobbi Morse had not arrived at Afterlife yet. Coulson sent Lance Hunter to check what had happened to her. Suddenly, Jemma Simmons joined the conversation and said that Robert Gonzales had allegedly shot Jiaying. Fitz said that he had got what he always wanted, but Coulson said that Gonzales had not done this and ordered them to find him.
Fitz then joined Hunter in the search for Morse. He checked the flight records from the base and saw that Morse had left the base with a Quinjet before the three others left for Afterlife. Hunter told him to change access and check the security cameras to the time before she left the the base. Fitz discovered that May had left the base twice; one time with Morse and the other time with the delegation of S.H.I.E.L.D. to Afterlife. Hunter realized that it was Agent 33 who was disguised as May and took Morse on a Quinjet. Fitz asked Hunter what Agent 33 wanted with Morse. Shocked by their discovery, they went to Coulson's office and showed the footage to Coulson, Melinda May and Jemma Simmons. Hunter said they found where the Quinjet was and May volunteered to take him there.
Calvin Zabo's Transformation
Calvin Zabo was brought to the Playground, to be interrogated by Phil Coulson. Where Coulson discovered that Jiaying staged the attack of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Afterlife so the Inhumans would think that they declared war on them. Where all of a sudden, during Coulson interrogation, Zabo started to have a heart attack. Zabo was brought to the lab where Jemma Simmons tried to revive him. Failing to save him, she asked Fitz for an adrenaline syringe.
When she injected him, Zabo's heart started work again, but he became monstrous with remarkable strength. Zabo was locked up in the medical pod, trying to get out, Coulson asked Fitz for suggestions and Fitz said that I.C.E.R.s could be a good start. As Zabo escaped from the pod, Fitz with Coulson and Simmons tried to shoot Zabo with I.C.E.R.s, but the attack was ineffective. Coulson ordered the two agents to go so he could try to calm Zabo down. Zabo would start searching the base, looking for agents to kill, until he found Fitz and Simmons. The two agents would lure Zabo into the hangar where Coulson could reason with him.
Preparing for a Counter Strike
Phil Coulson convinced Calvin Zabo to assist them against Jiaying, and Zabo was put under armed guard while Jemma Simmons helped counteract the effects of his formula, resulting in the reverse of his physical changes. Fitz informed Coulson that a distress beacon from the Iliad was expanded to all of S.H.I.E.L.D. channels. Coulson realized that the Inhumans had hijacked the ship while they were fighting Zabo.
Coulson asked Fitz if he got Lance Hunter and Melinda May on the line, but he responded that he could not communicate with them. Fitz then came to Coulson's office to inform him that he had built Quantum Field Disruptors that could make Gordon stay in a single location. Fitz and Coulson visited the room where Bobbi Morse would be analyzed since she had been badly injured. Coulson asked Simmons if Zabo was stable enough to join them in their mission to retake the Iliad, but Fitz and Simmons were surprised to hear that.
While preparing himself for going with Phil Coulson, Melinda May, and Calvin Zabo to retake the Iliad, Fitz was visited by Jemma Simmons. She started to explain that after she saw Lance Hunter with Bobbi Morse, she realized that they had never spoken about what Fitz had said her in the bottom of the ocean. Fitz was surprised to hear that. He said to her that there was nothing to be said about about it, but Simmons said that maybe there was. Coulson then came and informed Fitz that they were on the move, so Fitz followed him, leaving Simmons standing alone and crying to herself.
In one of the Quinjets heading to the Iliad, Fitz informed Coulson that someone had changed the S.O.S. signal. Coulson realized that it was Skye who had done that and Fitz said that she warned them that they were flying to a trap. Coulson ordered the other Quinjets to fall back while they still flew to the ship. As they landed on the the ship, Fitz got another message from Skye, which warned them about synthetic Terrigen Crystals in the HVAC room. Zabo then understood Jiaying's plan: she wanted to use the Terrigen Mist in the crystals to kill all the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Coulson and Fitz went to find the Crystals, while Zabo went to find Jiaying and May went to the HVAC room.
The two eventually found Alphonso Mackenzie protecting a box full of Crystals from Gordon. The three discussed, that if Gordon get's his hands of the that everyone would turn into a statue. Fitz started placing the Quantum Field Disruptors in place, this would trap Gordon inside the room so he could no longer teleport away. Fitz activated the devices in success, preventing Gordon from teleporting, much to the confusion of Gordon, questioning why he can't escape. Fitz would grab an iron pole, responded "Science, biatch."
The three S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, would try to hit Gordon but even when he stuck in the room he still have the advantages of teleporting around the room. Under Gordon made a mistake when he teleported behind Fitz, causing the iron pole Fitz was held to become embedded in Gordon's chest. As Gordon was falling down dying, he dropped the Terrigen Crystal that he had his his hand, which was caught by Coulson. As Coulson arm started to turn to stone, Mackenzie used his axe to cut off Coulson's hand and saving him.
Working on the Zephyr One
With the threat quelled, Phil Coulson asked Fitz to work on a new plane for his new program he founded. Fitz also helped Alphonso Mackenzie, who was now the head of the Alien Artifacts Department, to work on the Monolith on the Iliad. Although Jemma Simmons continued to push the idea of examining the Monolith, Mackenzie insisted that they must not open the box in a thousand years as it was too dangerous.
While Fitz and Jemma Simmons worked on the stone, he awkwardly tried to ask Simmons to go to dinner with him, although Simmons at first believed he was asking her to eat generally, she soon realized what he meant and agreed to have a date with him. Fitz leaned on the Monolith's casing and stumbled, causing the lock on the case to loosen. With Simmons having finally agreed, Fitz left the room. Without knowing it however, he had caused the stone's casing to unlock allowing the Monolith to swallow her. Simmons then disappeared without a trace.
Not Given Up Hope
Not willing to give up hope on finding Jemma Simmons again, Fitz dedicated his time and work to studying the Monolith in the hopes of finding an answer. This led him to questioning if she had been sent to a parallel dimension or lost to the Quantum Realm like Janet van Dyne. The more questions he asked, the more time he took off from S.H.I.E.L.D.. Eventually he learned of a scroll casing which was said to hold the answer to the Monolith's power; Fitz tracked the scroll to the criminal Yusef Hadad, who had stolen it.
Fitz tracked Hadad to Morocco and offered him the contents of his briefcase; Hadad's men captured Fitz and only spoke to him when they discovered the briefcase could not be opened without the password. Fitz explained his reasons for coming and told Hadad that he would only open the case if Hadad gave him the scroll casing. Hadad acquiesced and handed over the casing, ordering Fitz to open the briefcase; Fitz did and handed over the Splinter Bombs inside, explaining that they were the weapons that killed Sunil Bakshi. When Hadad tried to kill Fitz with the bomb, it activated the flash grenade inside. During the ensuing chaos, Fitz escaped with the scroll casing while Hadad's men shot at him.
Never Giving Up
Back at the Playground, Fitz found Phil Coulson waiting for him. Coulson tried to sympathize with Fitz's feelings by comparing his loss of Melinda May to Fitz losing Jemma Simmons; Coulson attempted to convince him to move on but Fitz remained determined. He smashed open the casing and read the scroll, translating the word to "Death". Seeming to accept this as the final confirmation that Simmons had been killed by the Monolith, Coulson comforted Fitz and told him it was time to finally move on and continue with their work.
Unable to accept that Jemma Simmons was dead, Fitz, after Coulson left, grabbed a shotgun and charged into the room containing the Monolith, ignoring the warning signs and kicking open the door. Without hesitation or fear, Fitz shot the locks of the Monolith's casing and stepped into its protective box. Fitz at first quietly spoke to the stone, asking it to do something and give him an answer; when nothing happened, he began to lose his temper before screaming at the stone and demanding it to do something, all while punching and kicking it to make it respond. Despite his screams, tears and strikes, the Monolith remained a stone and did not give him the answers he sought.
Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse then charged into the room followed by Phil Coulson, Alphonso Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson. They pulled Fitz away from the Monolith and locked its case seconds before it transformed into its liquid state again. Coulson berated Fitz over being so foolish, noting that he had already lost Jemma Simmons to it and could not afford to lose him too. Fitz apologized but assured him that he would never give up on finding his friend. As he sat on the ground, Fitz noticed a strange sand on his fingers which he had gained from touching the Monolith; seeing the sand gave Fitz an idea and he ran from the room.
Once he had confirmed his theory, Fitz called the team into Phil Coulson's office where he pitched them the idea that the sand was impossible and should not exist; therefore, it must confirm that the Monolith is a transportation device and had sent Jemma Simmons to another point across the universe. Coulson tried to make Fitz accept that it was possible that although he could be correct, Simmons may well be dead anyway having been lost for months; this did not stop Fitz and they agreed to continue researching his theory. While Fitz confirmed what he needed, Coulson sent Lance Hunter on his mission to hunt down and assassinate Grant Ward.
Help from an Asgardian
Fitz joined Phil Coulson and Bobbi Morse in traveling to Norway to seek the help of the Asgardian professor Elliot Randolph, who had been arrested for getting drunk and damaging property. Although Randolph initially made it clear that he had no wish to help as he was trying to keep his Asgardian powers quiet due to the recent fears of the public, Fitz made it clear they did not have time to wait and Coulson was able to change his mind with a threat of handing him over to the ATCU. Randolph reluctantly agreed and ripped the bars off his cell and left with them.
Returning to the Playground, Randolph looked at the Monolith and was fascinated, having never seen such an artifact before. As they discussed its powers, Randolph made it clear that they should destroy it; Fitz assured him that he would have to go through him first. Not wishing to kill Fitz, Randolph relented and asked for more information. The team told him about the scroll which Fitz had recently recovered and Randolph recognized the writing from a castle he had visited hundreds of years ago. Confirming his thoughts, Randolph told everyone to join him in the plane to investigate.
- "It's a strange shape for this time period because it's made to resonate, uh, to-to-to, uh... create a-a quantized field within the stone."
"Fitz, you're talking, but we're not totally following."
"The room is a speaker. The machine is an amplifier. Uh, a sub... subsonic frequency to resonate with the Monolith."
- ―Leo Fitz and Phil Coulson[src]
The team traveled to England to the castle which Elliot Randolph had visited all those years earlier. Randolph confirmed that it was the same castle and described the party he had attended there where he had seen the writing on the walls of the castle. The group found the writing and before long, Phil Coulson found a secret passage leading to another room which Randolph had never seen before. The room was filled with ancient machinery and a trap door which seemed like the perfect size to hold the Monolith. Once they confirmed the room was designed to test the Monolith's power, Coulson called Alphonso Mackenzie and ordered him to bring it to them.
Although reluctant, Mackenzie brought the Monolith to them in Zephyr One and they set it up for their experiment. Fitz led the team in setting up their equipment as they worked out how to work the machinery. They turned on the machine which triggered a vibration that caused the Monolith to transform into liquid; Fitz looked down at it and called out to Jemma Simmons. Demanding more light to see, Phil Coulson threw Fitz a flare gun which he fired into the liquid, making it instantly vanish. Before they could get their answers however, the machine broke and the Monolith returned to stone. The vibrations also caused Daisy Johnson to collapse as she complained of a terrible noise which nearly killed her.
Despite the machinery being broken, Fitz worked out that Daisy Johnson could use her powers to trigger the same effect. Johnson agreed despite the terrible effect it would have on her and the experiment was set up for a second attempt. Johnson used her powers to create a small earthquake which caused the Monolith to turn to liquid; while Coulson and Bobbi Morse set up a video feed to drop inside, Fitz attached a rope to himself and jumped inside. Fitz fell onto a desert planet in the middle of a sandstorm. Without hesitation, he began to desperately call out for Jemma Simmons.
To his shock, Simmons answered him and he saw her appear from behind a rock. The two friends called out to one another and desperately fought against the powerful winds to reach one another. However, back on Earth, Johnson struggled to control her powers and to keep the Monolith liquid, forcing Phil Coulson to order that Fitz be pulled back. Fitz was just able to grab Simmons' hand as he was pulled back into the portal. The moment the pair were sucked back to Earth, Johnson collapsed and the Monolith exploded. Fitz hugged his friend and smiled to the team as they celebrated their victory.
Once she had gone through medical tests and deemed to be safe from infection and physically well, Simmons was allowed to go to sleep aboard Zephyr One. Fitz stayed by her bedside while she slept. Once he had fallen asleep, Simmons awoke from a nightmare and attempted to defend herself with a blade. However, once she remembered where she was, she turned to see the sleeping Fitz sitting beside her. Simmons found comfort resting on Fitz's lap and fell into a more peaceful sleep.
Helping a Friend
Fitz would talk to the team, about Jemma Simmons physical had changed due to her experience on the Monolith. He would help her adjust, to Earth's gravity and accompanied her to the lab, where Bobbi Morse welcomed her. Fitz theorized that if she saw the lab again, she would feel better. Fitz noticed that small noises diverted her, as like when Morse's phone when off. Fitz is told by Simmons, that she wanted to go to her room to relax. He then start speaking with Morse, about how distanced Simmons is. Fitz is told by Morse, that Simmons needed a fresh start to learn how to live again on Earth.
Fitz then left the room, and made a reservation a restaurant just for him and Simmons, just like he promised to do months ago. He brought Simmons to the restaurant and told her that the reservation had been waiting for months and he planned it so that they would eat alone. Simmons said she did not know what to say for what he had done for her, so Fitz said that she did not have to say anything. But as she started to cry, Fitz sat next to her and comforted her.
Learning About Will Daniels
Fitz would join Phil Coulson and Bobbi Morse to Hollywood, California, to gather evidence from the apartment of Shane and Lori Henson, two Inhumans killed by Lash. Fitz would become annoyed with Morse, due to her because to difficulty adhering to the system that he and Jemma Simmons had developed. When Morse asked about Fitz and Simmons dinner, Fitz responded with it went find. But when He asked Morse if Simmons revealed anything to her about her experiences on the other planet, which Morse would lie, saying that she knew nothing.
Fitz and the team would return to the Playground to analyze the samples, Fitz is alerted by Morse that they have a hair sample of Lash began to dissolve. While discussing the strange occurrence, and if Morse had somehow contaminated the sample, Fitz found a notebook filled with research on the Monolith. Simmons ran into the lab and abruptly grabbed the notebook from Fitz, causing the paper to fall to the floor. Collecting her research, Fitz is told by Simmons to leave her things alone as she left.
Later, Fitz went to Simmons' room and asked her why she was researching the Monolith; Simmons decided to give him full disclosure about her experience on the other world. After telling him about her ordeal and her relationship with Will Daniels when she gave up hope of being rescued, Fitz left the room without speaking to Simmons. She, teary-eyed, begged him to understand her feelings. Fitz told her that he did understand her feelings and showed her his computer screen; it revealed the research that he had done over the past six months that she had been absent to locate her. Fitz declared to Simmons, that they would save Daniels and return him to Earth.
Researching Will Daniels
Fitz was assigned to act as technical support for Melinda May and Bobbi Morse, as they went to the Cayman Islands in search of Werner von Strucker. He allowed his computers to run simulations pertaining to the Monolith, as he made cover aliases and backgrounds. Fitz was met with Lance Hunter, who was reassigned for his actions with Grant Ward and putting Andrew Garner's life at risk. Fitz was asked by Hunter, why he was helping Jemma Simmons to rescue Will Daniels, a man about whom he knew nothing, when Fitz had feelings for Simmons. Fitz didn't answer, asking Hunter why he was there. Hunter wanted to help him, but Fitz quickly asked him to leave when he began touching the computers.
During May and Morse's undercover mission, Fitz would do research on von Strucker to find Ward, using the Backscatter Glasses which Morse wore. They would find Strucker's fake IDs and passports in his lock box, when an alarm went out. When Morse asked how much time they had, Fitz responded with zero. Fitz would determine that von Strucker, was in Lisbon, Portugal and which he informed Morse and May.
Fitz is asked by Simmons how his research into the Monolith was progressing. He could only tell her that the computer simulations had not yet found a way to open a viable portal. Fitz is told by Simmons, if he know Daniels, then he would understand why she wanted to rescue him. Fitz assured Simmons, that he will get to know Daniels. When Simmons left, Fitz, unknowing to Simmons, returned to reading background information and newspaper articles on Daniels.
Accessing Simmons' Phone
Fitz is asked by Jemma Simmons, to fix her phone when she had used during her survival on Maveth. Fitz would go uncover though Simmons' files and would watch her logs, when he would find his video on Simmons' birthday party. Fitz watched in shock, as he witnessed what Simmons' submitted logs and images about the groundbreaking realities of the planet and that of Will Daniels.
Fitz continue researching, as he noticed that Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter, that Daniels had a symbol on his uniform similar to one he had seen in the English castle, weeks ago. Morse thought that NASA had sent Daniels through the Monolith, but Fitz gave a theory believing that an ancient order truly sent Daniels. Hunter dismissed Fitz's conspiracy theory as lunacy, but Morse would tell to him check it out.
Fitz had given the fixed phone to Simmons, he would start to question Simmons about her entries. Fitz now wondering, about her state of mind as she placed them. Simmons, knowing that Fitz was referring to her affirmations of love to him and her said desire to start a family with him, told Fitz that she had perfect clarity when she made her logs. The two then watched as the morning began.
Discovering an Unlikely Connection
Fitz would continue this research on his theory, he scrolls and books brought to the lab. The agent moving the books dropped them, and Fitz angrily confronted him over his carelessness. Jemma Simmons calmed him down, before becoming angry with him when he mentioned bringing back Will Daniels. Fitz would follow her to the lab, bringing him into her search along with being angry with him for being so willing to bring back Daniels. Fitz retaliated, saying he was incredibly angry and sick, not at Simmons but at the cosmos for keeping them apart. Fitz was present at a debrief from Coulson on initiating Operation Spotlight, an infiltration of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit.
As Fitz continued to work on a way to bring back Daniels, Simmons would start to get angry with him. Fitz would try to calm her down, but she would end up leaving. Fitz would go and confront Simmons in the lab, asking her do she want him to help or not. Fitz is told by Simmons, that she expected him to get angry with her, and he had not. Fitz would tell that he is sick, that they are cursed and the universe want them apart. Fitz listed all the obstacles to their relationship, culminating with Daniels. Fitz asked Simmons if she loved Daniels, to which Simmons hesitatingly answered yes. Fitz agreed and began listing all of Daniels' character traits, saying that he had done everything for Simmons. However, Simmons cut him off and reminded Fitz that he had jumped through a portal to rescue her. Fitz stared at Simmons for a second, then kissed her. Simmons kissed him back, but Fitz broke away and mouthed "I love you" too Simmons before whispering that they were cursed and walked away.
Fitz was called back by Simmons when she noticed that a book that had fallen off the desk had opened to a page with a symbol similar to the modern HYDRA insignia. The two realized that HYDRA was behind Distant Star Pathfinder and had been sending people through the portal for centuries. Fitz and Simmons revealed their research to the other agents, laying out paper with each insignia, beginning with the Distant Star Pathfinder logo and continuing to the HYDRA symbol. Their research showed that HYDRA was inside NASA and the Advanced Threat Containment Unit.
- "It's irresponsible of us to open another portal. HYDRA's been searching for the thing on that planet for centuries."
"It's an old wives tale HYDRA moms tell their goblin babies."
"But I've seen it. It's real."
"Yes, and so is Will, and he's stuck there, and he needs our help."
- ―Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz[src]
When Rosalind Price was killed by Grant Ward, Phil Coulson summoned all the original members of his team to interrogate them about Ward to try and uncover anything to help understand him. Fitz was brought in, Fitz would tell Coulson that he saw Ward in his bunk. Coulson asked him, did he steal anything, which Fitz say no, but he was just sitting there staying at a picture of Fitz and his mom.
When Fitz was done with the interrogation, he returned to the lab where Alphonso Mackenzie brought in Luther Banks to see if he knew of the symbol that they recently discovered, which revealed to be associated with HYDRA. Banks explained that the symbols was from a project called Project Distant Star Pathfinder, a NASA program Banks was apart of. He revealed Gideon Malick funded the project, Coulson sent Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Banks to an abandoned Project Distant Star Pathfinder facility in search of clues to the Monolith.
While there, Simmons expressed her belief that it was unlikely they would find anything, but Fitz replied that they still could find something to help them bring back Will Daniels. Simmons told him that they could not bring him back, but Fitz said that they now knew exactly where the portal would open on Maveth, so they had to go there. Simmons told him that it would be selfish to potentially allow HYDRA to achieve their goal, but Fitz said that the HYDRA leader was only a legend. Fitz would protest, staying that it was important to get Daniels back, which he is told that she wanted to bring the man that saved her, but told him that it would be selfish to allow HYDRA to achieve their goal.
Before Fitz could respond, the two heard shots. Quickly turning, Fitz saw Banks shoot the other agents, then turn the gun on the two. Fitz asked Banks not to shoot them; however, Banks managed to say it was not him before the gun floated out of his hand, turned, and shot Banks in the head. Shocked at the sudden mysterious attack, Fitz and Simmons watched as Giyera entered the room and ordered them to follow him.
In the HYDRA Castle, Fitz and Simmons were brought to Ward and Gideon Malick. Fitz refused to help them open the portal, but Malick claimed that they did not need their help, so Simmons understood that they did not know how to bring someone back from there. Fitz and Simmons refused to cooperate with them, so Ward ordered to separate between the two. Fitz was tied up to a chair and heard Simmons' cries from the other room, and Ward told him that he could end this by telling them what they need.
Unable to stand hearing Jemma Simmons being tortured, Fitz agreed to enter the portal and guide HYDRA's team. Entering the portal chamber, Fitz saw Simmons restrained by Giyera. She broke free from his hold and ran to Fitz; when Giyera started after her, Fitz told him that the deal was off if he touched her. Simmons begged him not to go, but Fitz assured her that the only thing he would bring back would be Will Daniels. Hugging Simmons, Fitz saw Grant Ward enter the chamber in full combat gear. Asking him what he was doing, Fitz learned that Ward was leading the HYDRA team. The portal opened and Fitz, Ward, and the other agents jumped through.
Once through the portal, the team began searching for It. Hiking up a rise, Fitz tried to distract Ward by showing him the program he was using to find the exit portal, before going for Ward's gun. However, Ward realized his intent and kicked Fitz down a ridge before following him down and threatening that Simmons would die if he did not return, and it would be Fitz's fault. One of Ward's soldiers called out for him to come and he walked away. Fitz followed him to the soldier, where he saw an old structure in the shape of HYDRA's symbol. Fitz continued on with the team.
Fitz realized that the area that they were walking through was familiar; looking around, he noticed a metal hatch in the ground. Knowing he had found the home of Will Daniels, Fitz entered the hatch, with a furious Ward following him. Once in the cave, Fitz found what he believed to be Daniels with an injured leg on his bed. "Daniels" sat up and questioningly recognized him; Fitz confirmed that it was him as Ward stormed in, angry that Fitz had entered the cave without permission. Fitz panicked as Ward threatened to shoot "Daniels", hastily explaining that "Daniels" was to be their guide and he was the only way to find It. Ward noticed the insignia on "Daniels"' suit and agreed to take him, first offering Fitz the chance to shoot him. Fitz told Ward to grow up and once he had confirmed that "Daniels" could walk, the group left the cave.
Walking with "Daniels", Fitz explained that Ward was part of an organization dedicated to bringing back their leader, It. Fitz listened as "Daniels" informed him that they were in the 'no fly zone'. Fitz listened as Ward asked "Daniels" what the structure they had seen was; "Daniels" told him that it was a shrine to It, and that It had lived there. "Daniels" formed a plan to escape from Ward and ordered Fitz to follow his lead. As they continued, a sandstorm began to form, and the team eventually had to shelter behind some rocks. Fitz watched as "Daniels" killed the two HYDRA agents sheltering with them, and he and "Daniels" crept away before Ward realized their escape.
Fitz and "Daniels" continued on towards the exit point. As they walked, Fitz saw an ancient city, and asked "Daniels" about it, asking why Simmons had not told him about it. "Daniels" replied that she had never seen it, and explained that there were nine such cities, and the inhabitants had torn each other apart. Suddenly, "Daniels"' leg gave out and he fell. Fitz ran to him and pulled the bandage away to try to assess the damage; he saw only bone and rotting flesh, and realized that what he had believed was Will Daniels was in reality It, inhabiting Daniels' corpse. It began attacking Fitz, who held It off for a time, but was beaten back. Just as It was about to crush Fitz with a rock, It was shot by Phil Coulson.
Fitz got up and watched Coulson fight Ward, before realizing that It had also regained its feet and had begun walking towards the now-opened portal. Fitz found a gun and shot It again, but It continued on. Finally, Fitz discovered his flare gun and engulfed It in flames, finally stopping the dark Inhuman. Realizing that the portal was about to close, Fitz screamed for Coulson. Fitz watched Coulson kill Ward, before both entered the portal and were rescued by Alphonso Mackenzie, back on Earth as they made their hurried escape.
Getting onboard the Containment Module, Fitz, Coulson, Mackenzie and Daisy Johnson managed to escape the HYDRA Castle just as it was destroyed by missiles. Reaching Zephyr One the group reunited with their friends and teammates while Fitz watched as Simmons searched for Daniels inside the empty Containment Module, before realizing he was not there and turning back to Fitz as she began to cry. Fitz hugged Simmons to comfort her over the loss of her friend and lover, and shared a look with Coulson, knowing that Coulson had killed Ward in cold blood.
Back to Work
Missed by Jemma Simmons
Fitz would return to the lab assisting Jemma Simmons, where Phil Coulson ask to speak to him. Fitz is asked by Coulson his opinion on Lincoln Campbell, which replied that Campbell had been helping Simmons understand the Inhumans' biology. Fitz also told Coulson about feeling guilty for what he had done to Will Daniels. Coulson explained that he had made the hard choice, due to It using Daniels as a host. Fitz is ordered by Coulson to set up the Theta Brain-Wave Frequency Machine, which he refused at first, but Coulson said it's for Werner von Strucker, who might know where Gideon Malick was.
Later, Fitz finished working on Coulson's new robotic hand, as Simmons entered the lab and said that she missed him. Fitz was confused, but Simmons explained that she missed their partnership because of the recent events. Fitz told her that maybe there had been a way to save Daniels, but Simmons said that he was extraordinary, since he had been fully supportive of her since she had returned from the Maveth and killed the creature. Together they restored the moment they had met, reintroducing themselves in an attempt to start over.
Fitz made a device for Phil Coulson that could replicate people's fingerprints, as he brought it to Zephyr One, he spoke with Lance Hunter about the Inhumans symposium. Later, Carl Creel was brought into the Playground, he was by inside a Containment Module. Fitz and Jemma Simmons would meet with his, asked him about his powers and how he could touch the Diviner without being killed, which he didn't know. They would do some of Creel's blood and test it with Terrigenesis.
The two interrupted Lincoln Campbell that Daisy Johnson's pre-Terrigenesis blood reacted to the Terrigen, but as they mixed it with Creel's blood, it broke down the Terrigenesis. They theorized that it could be a vaccine to Inhumans that were not yet transformed. Johnson entered the lab, shocked at the idea. Fitz and Simmons left the room to let her and Campbell talk.
Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter followed Gideon Malick to Siberia, which the rest of the team would follow them on Zephyr One. They went to a compound, where Hunter and Melinda May found the body of the Prime Minister of Russia's Attaché.
Morse and Hunter were caught after they entered the building. Phil Coulson asked Fitz to activate an EMP in Morse and Hunter's investigation room by his signal, but no signal was made. Coulson returned from where they had been interrogated, saying that in order to keep S.H.I.E.L.D. a secret, the two had been disavowed from the agency. Later, the team went to a bar where Morse and Hunter were. Without directly contacting them, Coulson and the others all ordered shots for the two, saying goodbye in the only way they could.
Encounter with the Watchdogs
Following the Watchdogs attack on the ATCU Storage Facility, Fitz is sent by Phil Coulson to go with Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie to check out the scene. Fitz discovered that the Watchdogs had used Nitramene to collapse the facility.
On Zephyr One, Fitz, Mackenzie and Johnson would discuss, the Watchdogs. Fitz brought up that if you hate something, it gives up a direction. Which Mackenzie would bring up, his brother. saying that his a good guy but he on the side of the Watchdogs. Johnson suggested to use her powers against on of them and questioning him, but Mackenzie explained that it was not about how they acted, it was about how they would respond. Mackenzie would then leave going, to return to his brother. Which Fitz would join Johnson, much to his uncertainty.
Fitz then helped Johnson to interrogate a Watchdog member, called Dallas Wyatt by threatening him with a gun, despite his unwillingness. After he told them the location of the Watchdogs base, they would travel there. The three arrival, and Fitz would use a D.W.A.R.F. in their barn where they saw Felix Blake. However, Fitz was shot by a member of the Watchdogs, with a Nitramene. Johnson could not defect it, which Fitz realized Blake had improved it.
In a Containment Module, Fitz and Johnson questioned a member of the Watchdogs, which they would learn from the member how to defect it. After Fitz was saved, Johnson told the Watchdogs member she would hand him over to Glenn Talbot, but he told her the Watchdogs were after Mackenzie as they mistook him for being an Inhuman.
Daisy Johnson's Visions
Daisy Johnson saw a vision of the future from the Inhuman Charles Hinton. After she returned to the Playground, Johnson told the team she would fight HYDRA to rescue Hinton from them and Fitz and Jemma Simmons would hold hands as the snow falls. Johnson said they could change the future from happening, but Fitz explained to the team that time was an illusion of the fourth dimension, therefore the future could not be changed. Phil Coulson suggested they would send Melinda May to the mission, as well as ordering Fitz and Simmons not to go in the snow, attempting to alter the predicted future.
Johnson gave details of the location of the battle to Fitz and Simmons, and they used S.H.I.E.L.D. services to find it. May entered the room and demeaned they would not use all of them. Simmons explained that she and May used some of the services to find Lash. Fitz joined Simmons, Lincoln Campbell and others as they began training to ensure Melinda May would undergo her mission as fast as possible in order to change the vision's outcome. Despite Fitz's doubts, Johnson made sure the room was laid out as accurately as possible to the vision she had had while Fitz and the other agents acted as the guards who needed to be taken out. Eventually May managed to beat the time limit.
Eventually they were able to replicate the events perfectly, with May managing to beat the time limit. They then eventually found the location of the battle, which was owned by Transia Corporation. Coulson said he had heard of them so Fitz said he had used their technology for his prosthetic hand. Coulson gave his last orders to May when suddenly the alarms in the base went off, telling them that there was an intruder. Andrew Garner was brought into the base and explained that Lash was taking over and he wanted to say goodbye to May. Which May ordered by Coulson, to stay so she can say goodbye to her ex-husband while Johnson would go on mission.
May was ordered to stay behind, so she could say goodbye to her ex-husband while Johnson went into the mission and Fitz managed to hack into Transia Corporation's CCTV feed. In Coulson's office they watched as they managed to hack into the Transia Corporation's CCTV feed. As they spotted Giyera on the feed, suddenly the video seemed to show Grant Ward in the building. Fitz claimed it was likely to be the creature, that lived on Monolith.
They went to the building to save Johnson and find Ward. Fitz and Simmons stayed outside. Seeing no cloud in the sky, Fitz said that maybe Johnson had not seen the future. Suddenly, Fluorescent sparkles fell from the building's rooftop, so Fitz realized Johnson had not seen snow. Simmons said they supposed to hold hands now, so the two did it.
Fitz, Jemma Simmons, Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie examined skeletons sentenced from the skin by Hive. Fitz explained that Grant Ward's body was possessed by the Inhuman from Maveth. The team was called to Phil Coulson's office for a meeting where he explained that in order to find Hive, they would go to GT Agrochemical facility which had been raided by HYDRA. On Zephyr One, Fitz and Simmons explained to Coulson that Hive had created small organisms which had consumed the victims' flesh. As the team prepared to enter to facility and to face Giyera there, Fitz explained them his powers. Melinda May asked him about a room in the facility where she could defeat him.
After they kidnapped Giyera, Fitz found that the data of the facility had been moved to an oil field in Schoonebeek. Fitz found a frustrated Coulson. He asked him if he was fine, so Coulson explained that in contrast to the justified act against Hive Fitz had done on Maveth, he should not had kill Ward. Fitz tried to conform him by saying Ward had to die, but Coulson retorted by saying that Ward got the last laugh when he killed him. Fitz then was near to the Containment Module where Giyera was inside it. Suddenly he noticed that one of the seat belt was missing a buckle. Giyera used it to escaped the module and Fitz set the alarm. He pointed a rifle at Giyera but the latter managed to take it. Fitz revealed it had no bullet so Giyera threw it towards Fitz but he missed. Mackenzie tried to beat Giyera but he failed and Giyera managed to bring the plane to the oil field.
Fitz, Jemma Simmons, Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie helped a wounded Melinda May to get shelter in a storage room at Gideon Malick's Headquarters. The room was soon assaulted by HYDRA agents who began to ram the door. While Simmons took care of May's wound, Fitz and Mackenzie spread chlorine gas in the corridor, making the HYDRA agents cough and blinding them. The group was then rescued by Elena Rodriguez and Daisy Johnson before returning on the Zephyr One.
Back at the Playground, Fitz and Simmons noticed that the dead body of Lucio, killed by Joey Gutierrez during the battle at Gideon Malick's Headquarters, maintained a high body temperature, and thus placed the corpse in quarantine. Fitz later assisted Simmons during Lucio's autopsy, looking for a way to determine whether one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Inhumans was infected by Hive. Fitz displayed some discomfort, both because of the autopsy and because of the fact that they could not trust the Inhumans present at the Playground. The two scientists then discovered the signs of Hive infection in Lucio's brain, and reported their discovery to Coulson.
Immediately after that, the power was cut at the Playground. Fitz and Simmons made their way to the generators room and, on their way, discovered the dead body of Malick with a grenade beside it. The grenade exploded, throwing Fitz and Simmons on the ground. They were found by Coulson who ordered them to get some rest in a calm place, with Fitz abruptly rebuking Lincoln Campbell when he offered his help since they still did not know whether he was infected by Hive or not.
Fitz and Simmons went to Fitz's bedroom where they kept searching for a test for Hive's infection. Both sitting on Fitz's couch, they contemplated one of his pictures of cosmos, discussing Hive, and Fitz jokingly noted that Hive was unable to leave Maveth without the help of humans. Fitz and Simmons then shared a tender look, holding hands before slowly kissing. Fitz apologized, remembering that Simmons had proposed to start their relationship from the beginning. However, Simmons replied that they had known each other for 10 years and that, since Fitz considered that they were "cursed", they couldn't waste any more time. They kissed again and stayed in Fitz's bedroom until Johnson, who turned out to be infected by Hive, escaped from containment by generating a earthquake which damaged the Playground.
Fitz ensured the rebooting of the system with the help of Lincoln Campbell. He later attended the crisis meeting held by Phil Coulson before leaving the Playground with the Zephyr One, along with the rest of his friends. He and Jemma Simmons then informed Coulson that Hive's infection on the Inhumans had the same effect than a drug addiction, making them invulnerable to I.C.E.R. shots. They suggested to make contact with Holden Radcliffe, a scientist specialized in parasitic organisms who used to work at GT Agrochemical. Radcliffe was fired from the company due to the transhumanist experiments he conducted.
Coulson sent Fitz, Simmons and Alphonso Mackenzie to Romania in order to retrieve Radcliffe. While preparing for the mission, Fitz and Simmons, acting as they were having a professional conversation due to the presence of numerous S.H.I.E.L.D. agents around them, discussed the future of their relationship after the kiss they shared the day before, especially in the perspective of having sex. However, they were interrupted by Melinda May.
In Bucharest, Fitz, Simmons and Mackenzie rented a hotel room and prepared for their mission in a private club where Radcliffe was supposed to be. Fitz and Simmons posed as two high ranking geneticists willing to sell an advanced technology to Radcliffe: a variation of the eye technology implanted in Deathlok. Mackenzie stayed in the hotel room, following the progression of his colleagues through Fitz's glasses. Fitz noticed two men staring at them and supposed that they were working for Radcliffe. Approaching them, they were greeted by Anon, Radcliffe's assistant, who asked them if they had made an appointment.
Upon learning that they were willing to show their technology to Radcliffe only, Anon requested that Fitz and Simmons waited at the bar until Radcliffe was ready to see them. There, they briefly cut their communications so that Mackenzie could not hear them and they resumed their interrupted conversation about moving further in their relationship. Fitz compared the fact of having sex with Simmons to a singularity, like in transhumanism or in a black hole. Simmons found the metaphor both lovely and terrifying, and the two agreed that their best option was to stop thinking about it and simply doing it.
Anon came back to them and invited them to follow her in order to meet Radcliffe. Fitz and Simmons were brought to a small operation room where they were asked to surgically implant the cybernetic eye on a patient in order to demonstrate the efficiency of their technology. They discussed the matter with Mackenzie and resolved to follow Anon's instructions. However, before doing the surgery, Simmons noticed that the eye they were supposed to replace was not of human origin but was instead an avian prosthetic eye. The patient they were supposed to operate was actually Radcliffe himself.
Fitz and Simmons presented their technology to Radcliffe, who recognized it as similar to the one used by Cybertek to control their soldiers through explosives implanted in the eye. Fearing that Fitz and Simmons were from HYDRA, Radcliffe ordered Anon to generate an EMP to disable their communications. Distraught, Fitz and Simmons informed Radcliffe of Hive's existence and his ability to infect Inhumans. However, before they could develop, Radcliffe's guards came across the room and tried to take them out. Fitz managed to knock one guard out and explained to Radcliffe that he was the only one who could save Daisy Johnson while Simmons was taken out.
Just as Fitz mentioned her, Johnson blew up the door of the operation room and proceeded to kidnap Radcliffe with the assistance of Alisha Whitley. Fitz tried to stop them, but Johnson used her powers to throw him against the wall. Johnson then smothered Fitz with her powers and demanded that S.H.I.E.L.D. stopped trying to rescue her, stating that she had finally found a family with Hive and that she was willing to hurt any S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who would come near her. Releasing a hardly breathing Fitz, Johnson finally threatened him to kill him if he came for her again before leaving the club.
Mackenzie would decide to given the two agents some privacy, leaving the room, Fitz would return to the hotel room, where Simmons was awaiting him. Fitz is told by Simmons, that Mackenzie is busy at the Quinjet unloading equipment, so they were alone in the hotel room for a while. Fitz, putting in practice what he and Simmons had discussed in the club, kissed Simmons and the two finally had sex, taking a great leap forward in their relationship.
Searching for a Cure
- "Jemma... are we good after, you know, our disagreement?"
"Oh, yeah, of course we're good. If I wanted a boyfriend who agreed with everything I said, I never would have broken up with Milton."
"Ugh... Milton! He was the absolute worst, what with his stupid, fat cabbage head of his."
- ―Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons[src]
Fitz and Jemma Simmons kept trying to elaborate a cure for Hive's infection. They developed an antitoxin which was shown to fight the parasites, but it was also potentially fatal to the immune system. Fitz insisted that it was worth testing. Lincoln Campbell, ready to do anything to help Daisy Johnson, offered to be their Guinea pig.
They had to call for Phil Coulson in order to make a decision one way or the other. To Simmons, Campbell was only willing to try the antitoxin because he was a "lovesick fool trying to make a grand gesture". Fitz, possibly identifying with that description since he had risked his life on multiple occasions to save Simmons, thought that there was a slight chance that it could work. However, Coulson refused that Campbell received the antitoxin and ordered Fitz and Simmons to look for another solution.
Fitz went to find Simmons at the Playground's cafeteria, worried that their disagreement might affect their relationship in private. Simmons reassured him, saying that she did not want a boyfriend who agreed to anything she could say, since she already had that kind of boyfriend when she dated their classmate Milton. Both agreed that they should not let their disagreements at work endanger their newfound love story. The pair jokingly talked about their time at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy on their way back to the lab, only to find Campbell who had seized a syringe and injected himself with the antitoxin. Fitz and Simmons rushed at him but Campbell, on the verge of fainting refused that Simmons gave him a drug to counter the effects of the antitoxin.
Fitz attended to an exhausted Campbell, blaming him for disobeying Coulson and for causing malfunctions in the lab's equipment, since Campbell's electric powers burst out when he injected himself with the antitoxin. Fitz then prepared Campbell so that Simmons could perform a brain biopsy to test the effects of the antitoxin. Fitz and Simmons soon had another patient, to take care of Alphonso Mackenzie had been wounded by Johnson in an attempt to bring her back to S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson's team thus learnt of Hive's plans, turning all humans into Inhumans who would serve him while he took over the world.
Daisy Johnson's Return
Following Daisy Johnson's infection by Hive, S.H.I.E.L.D. knew that she was able to infiltrate its systems. Fitz decided to take some countermeasures in order to keep her out of the systems, though he knew that he could not repel her attacks forever. However, Melinda May suggested another course of action, and to take the initiative instead of only defending themselves.
Fitz attended a meeting with Phil Coulson and Jemma Simmons, during which they informed Glenn Talbot of the mechanism of Hive's infection. Fitz and Simmons also warned Coulson and Talbot that although Hive could not harvest the Kree blood he needed from the two Krees who had tried to kill him, he had another source of Kree blood: Daisy Johnson. Indeed, since the GH.325 she had been injected with when she was mortally wounded by Ian Quinn was of Kree origin, Hive could use her blood in order to successfully replicate the Kree experiment that he underwent and so transform humans into Inhumans, by creating a virus he just had to spread across the Earth.
Talbot recommended a preemptive strike by the U.S. Army, but Coulson, Simmons and Fitz disagreed. Indeed, Fitz informed Talbot that Hive had stolen something in an ATCU facility in Indiana. At the same time, Fitz received an alert indicating that Johnson was back into S.H.I.E.L.D. systems. Fitz and Simmons discovered that she had accessed Lincoln Campbell's containment chamber by fooling them with a loop on the video feeds making them think that Lincoln was asleep while he was actually talking to Johnson.
With the help of Simmons and Alphonso Mackenzie, Fitz locked down the Playground and its systems to prevent Campbell from escaping. However, he forgot to do the same for the Quinjet systems and realized only too late that Johnson had took over on it. A Quinjet flew out of the Playground but contrary to what Fitz, Simmons and Talbot thought, Campbell was not aboard: he made Johnson believe he would join her, while actually he had no intention to do so as long as she was under Hive's influence. Campbell devised this plan with May and instead, they sent Lash to Hive. Indeed, since Lash had once spared the life of Johnson, Campbell thought that his purpose was not to kill her, but instead to kill Hive. Though they were wrong, Lash's intervention cured Johnson from her infection, allowing her to return to the Playground.
Fitz and Simmons asked Johnson about what she experienced beside Hive and she told them about the existence of the Primitives. They understood that if Hive had a way to generate a shock wave powerful enough, he could spread his virus and turn all humans into Primitives. Talbot revealed that he already had what he needed, since the device stolen in Indiana was a warhead.
Cure for the Primitives
In order to prevent Hive from launching a missile loaded with his virus, S.H.I.E.L.D. needed to get a missile kill code from the U.S. military. While Glenn Talbot was trying to get one from General Andaz, but the latter refused, saying that it would violate the chain of command. However, Talbot kept him long enough on the line so that Fitz could find the location of the kill codes and duplicate the voice and the image of General Andaz. Fitz then used chroma key compositing and motion tracking sensors to impersonate General Andaz during a video interview with Undersecretary Walter Thomas to obtain the kill code from him. This enabled S.H.I.E.L.D. to stop the launching.
Fitz dismantled the Theta Brain-Wave Frequency Machine, due to Phil Coulson's request. Fitz would help Alphonso Mackenzie and gave him instructions for the development and the deployment of the Theta Brain-Wave Frequency Machine that Mackenzie, Melinda May, Elena Rodriguez and Lincoln Campbell used against Hive in order to bring back to his mind all the memories of his previous hosts at the same time, confusing him.
Following the success of the operation led by S.H.I.E.L.D, both from the Playground and on the field, Holden Radcliffe was taken into S.H.I.E.L.D's custody and ordered to work with Fitz and Jemma Simmons in order to find a cure for the Primitives that Hive and Radcliffe had created. However, Fitz doubted that they could easily find a cure. Discussing with Simmons, he soon realized that she was planning a romantic trip for both of them in the Seychelles Islands in order to get some rest far from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agitated environment.
Fitz later approved the transfer of the Gel Matrix box in which Hive was locked in. However, he noticed that something was wrong with a shipment of mechanical pieces that were stored next to the cell. Before he could do anything, an explosion happened, spreading a pseudo-Terrigen Mist which turned S.H.I.E.L.D. agents into Primitives. Fitz escaped the mist but was almost killed by the Primitives before leaving the hangar with the assistance of Phil Coulson and Simmons. However, Hive was released by his new Primitives slaves and planned to steal the Zephyr One in order to spread his virus.
While Daisy Johnson was fighting Hive after learning that he could no longer take her under his influence, Fitz went with Melinda May to check on the malfunctioning of her Containment Module. Together, they discovered that Johnson had escaped and was trying to stop Hive. At the same time, 28 Primitives had stormed the Playground and were invading it to take down S.H.I.E.L.D., quickly followed by Giyera, Hellfire and other Primitives. Hive stole the Zephyr One with Giyera and Hellfire and put it in vertical flight in order to drop his virus on Earth, but unbeknownst to them, Fitz and May had infiltrated the plane.
Fitz and May found Johnson, imprisoned in the plane's Containment Module, but she refused to be set free, thinking she was a liability. Fitz respected her decision and wet to find some weaponry for May and him. Before they could proceed on the plane, May was knocked out by Giyera, who used his telekinetic powers to steal Fitz's gun and threaten him. However, Fitz managed to play for time by telling Giyera that he had hidden a weapon on the plane to destroy them all and seized an invisible Cloaked Gun to shoot Giyera twice, killing him. He then released Johnson and took a dizzy May with them.
They soon received reinforcements as Phil Coulson, Jemma Simmons, Alphonso Mackenzie and Lincoln Campbell used a Quinjet to get on the Zephyr One. However, Campbell was badly injured fighting Hellfire, so Simmons and Fitz had to take care of him. Fitz and Simmons then let Johnson with Campbell to give them some privacy.
Coulson disclosed his plan to the rest of his team: stealing the warhead containing Hive's pathogen and load it into a Quinjet to have it blown into space, where the pathogen would be harmless. However, this implied that someone had to be in the Quinjet, sacrificing himself. When they discovered that Johnson ran to the Quinjet to do it, Hive and several Primitives appeared, making Fitz and the others fight them.
To everyone's surprise, Campbell had also infiltrated the Quinjet and projected Johnson out of it, taking the Quinjet into the cosmos himself with Hive and his warhead aboard. Johnson begged her friends to bring Campbell back, but Fitz told her that it was impossible, since Campbell had suppressed the remote control and that the Quinjet could not be maneuvered in space anyway. Fitz then watched, helpless, the destruction of the Quinjet, exchanging a saddened look with Simmons at the sight of Johnson, devastated by the loss of his boyfriend.
Yo-Yo Rodriguez' Vendetta
When Elena Rodriguez came to the Playground in order to sign the Sokovia Accords, she went to the labs where she met with Fitz and Jemma Simmons, who were gently arguing about a television Fitz wanted to buy for their room. While Fitz was setting up her new tracking watch he had specifically designed to account for her Inhuman powers, Rodriguez asked them if they had been looking for a place to live together, much to Fitz's dismay, who told Rodriguez that from this moment Simmons would be obsessed by the matter. He then explained to Rodriguez how the watch worked. Unbeknownst to Fitz and Simmons, Rodriguez had used one of the lab's computer to perform a facial recognition on her target Victor Ramon.
Creation of Aida
Fitz would design the Framework with the help of Jemma Simmons, a virtual working environment. Fitz would discuss the new S.H.I.E.L.D. with Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie, when they brought up Simmons' promotion where she is now the Director In Science and Technology, (which Fitz jokingly called it S.A.D.I.S.T.). Fitz was told by Simmons, that she couldn't make it to Holden Radcliffe's football game.
Fitz would arrive at Radcliffe's House, where he would accidentally discovered the existence of Aida, a Life-Model Decoy created by Radcliffe in order to serve as his assistant. Fitz showed great discomfort with Radcliffe's project, since he was not supposed to conduct any experimentation without oversight. Radcliffe requested Fitz's help to finish conceiving Aida but Fitz refused, thinking that the best course of actions was to report the existence of Aida to S.H.I.E.L.D authorities.
Fitz warned Radcliffe about the dangers that Aida could represent, remembering the mayhem caused by the creation of Ultron. However, Radcliffe and Aida replied that she was not designed as a weapon but as a decoy and a safeguard to prevent Fitz and Simmons to lose more friends after they suffered the losses of Antoine Triplett, Andrew Garner and Lincoln Campbell, for example. Fitz resolved to keep Aida's existence a secret to Simmons and Jeffrey Mace until he and Radcliffe would be sure that she was flawless.
Encountering Ghost Rider
Fitz and Jemma Simmons were asked to study a mysterious box brought back from a field mission by Phil Coulson and Melinda May. Fitz, not believing that the box was as empty as it looked like, managed to reveal that it contained extremely advanced technology. Alphonso Mackenzie then came to the lab and told them that S.H.I.E.L.D. had heard about someone suffering from the same kind of dementia than the Chinese mobsters who had been in contact with the box. When Mackenzie mentioned the vision of a ghost, Simmons deemed it as simple hallucinations, but then Mackenzie showed them footage of Lucy Bauer, who looked like a spectrum.
Fitz and Simmons would start to investigate Bauer's incorporeal nature, mentioning a possible multi-dimensional event like Tobias Ford had experienced. Fitz would also study the composition of the alloy of the box, which was manufactured by Momentum Labs. Upon learning that one Momentum Labs facility was located in Pasadena, California, Fitz is picked to go with Mackenzie to go on the field to investigate the lab. Fitz discussed with Mackenzie about if Mackenzie has spoken to Yo-Yo Rodriguez, which Mackenzie responded with that he speaks to her on Skype. Fitz then asked Mackenzie about finding Daisy Johnson, which Fitz is told that they was close.
Fitz and Mackenzie infiltrated the facility and arrived in a mysterious room at the center of which was a strange reactor. However, another incorporeal man, Frederick, appeared, only to vanish when Mackenzie shot at him. Fitz and Mackenzie quickly realized that they were powerless facing such an opponent. Frederick locked Mackenzie in the reactor and threatened to kill him as well as Fitz by blowing up the facility. However, while Frederick was on the verge of killing Fitz, he was stopped by Robbie Reyes, who took his Ghost Rider form to eliminate Frederick. Reyes was followed by Johnson, who released Mack out of the reactor. Finally, Fitz managed to stop the reactor, preventing the whole facility from exploding.
- "I'm also gonna need some needles and some bowls of water. What, didn't any of you guys go to the Scouts? We're making compasses. Oh, come on. It's rudimentary science. Yeah, no big deal. Just rudimentary science. Maybe saving the day."
- ―Leo Fitz[src]
When Miami was struck by a blackout, Fitz investigated the video sent by the so called "Inhuman Resistance" to determine its origin, seeing that the attack's high level of sophistication excluded the possibility of an opponent acting on his own. Fitz thought that the blackout was caused by an E.M.P. and not by an Inhuman, and warned that similar blackouts could occur in other cities across America.
Fitz, Alphonso Mackenzie and Phil Coulson were sent by Jeffrey Mace to Miami in order to solve the crisis. Aboard the Zephyr One, they watched the interview of Ellen Nadeer, and were informed that more American cities had also underwent a blackout. Fitz developed a way to track down the origin of the E.M.P. and locate its users. However, since the E.M.P. was continuous and not pulsed, all of S.H.I.E.L.D. modern equipment was out of use when the team arrived in the E.M.P. area, forcing Fitz to track down the E.M.P.'s origin the old way. Fitz, Mackenzie and Coulson then arrived at the hotel where Yo-Yo Rodriguez was previously partying with her friends in order to save her from a Watchdogs attack.
Fitz, Coulson, Mackenzie and Rodriguez quickly figured out that there was no such thing as the Inhuman Resistance and that all the blackout attacks were set up by the Watchdogs in order to grow hatred towards the Inhumans, since the Watchdogs wanted their extermination. Fitz then crafted hand-made compasses in order to locate the source of the E.M.P. Fitz, Coulson, Mackenzie and Rodriguez successfully raided the place where the E.M.P. source was located. Using Rodriguez's powers, they unarmed and knocked out all the Watchdogs before deactivating the E.M.P., ending the Miami blackout and giving the solve for other cities.
Mace seized this S.H.I.E.L.D. victory as an opportunity to reveal S.H.I.E.L.D. to the public. Fitz watched his press conference with the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents at the Playground, wondering if going public was such a good idea as he appreciated working in the shadows.
Fitz was called by Jemma Simmons who is looking for a place where the two can live together, Fitz went to Holden Radcliffe's apartment in order to check on Melinda May and work on a chemical cure for the infection induced by Lucy Bauer and her former coworkers. However, he was upset to see that Radcliffe had Aida helping him taking care of May, thus revealing her existence to another person. However, Radcliffe dismissed his fears, stating that May did not notice Aida's android nature.
Under the guise of having to do more tests on her brain, Fitz and Radcliffe were able to convince May to stay within Radcliffe's apartment for a bit longer. They were almost given away when Aida had translated what May said in Chinese before claiming most of her was Chinese, but Fitz interject telling May that Aida is from Canada. Which May brought the story, saying that she likes Aida.
That night, Fitz is greeted by Simmons and Phil Coulson, which they came to check to see how May is and to see if she ready to return to S.H.I.E.L.D.. While Aida introduce herself to Coulson, Fitz is asked to speak to Simmons in private. Simmons thought that Fitz was spending time at Radcliffe's apartment because of Aida's looks, which Fitz would try to play dum. Fitz is then told by Simmons, that she knows that Aida is an android. Fitz admitted that he participated in Aida's design and that he did not tell Simmons because she had to undergo frequent lie detector tests, Fitz is informed by Simmons that her lie detector test is the next day.
After learning Aida's true nature, Jemma Simmons was mad at Fitz for keeping a secret. Fitz tried to reconcile with Simmons, offering to train her for her lie detection test, but Simmons bluntly refused and sent Fitz away.
Fitz would join Alphonso Mackenzie and Quake on the Zephyr One in order to provide them with antidote syringes for the infections caused by Lucy Bauer and her former coworkers, since they had trapped Phil Coulson and Melinda May in the prison where Eli Morrow was detained. Fitz would remain on the Zephyr One to communicate and guide the team and monitor the prison security feeds so that they could reach Morrow.
When Bauer released some of the prisoners to fight Coulson, Quake and May, Fitz was forced to hack into the prison's systems, thus opening all the doors, including the cells. Fitz then continued to guide his teammates to Morrow through a secure way, though Quake chose to stay behind in order to hold back the prisoners chasing them. Fitz then managed to find another way for Coulson and May to get back to Quake while Mackenzie and Ghost Rider released Morrow. However, the latter was kidnapped by Bauer.
Fitz took part in other mission at Momentum Labs, where they learned that Lucy Bauer had taken pieces of equipment in order to replicate the experiment which had turned her into a ghost so that she could reverse the process and abandon her incorporeal nature. Fitz figured out that she needed a more powerful power source to be human again.
Fitz needed to access some classified files and needed Coulson's approval to study them. However, Jeffrey Mace, who was aboard the Zephyr One searching for Daisy Johnson and Robbie Reyes, dismissed his request as not being a priority. Fitz would arrive, saying that might have a lead to find Eli Morrow. This would cause Reyes to force his way out of the Containment Module, much to Fitz's surprise. Fitz would witness Ghost Rider attack Mace, which Phil Coulson tried to stop Reyes from killing Mace. The attack was stopped, Gabe Reyes managed to reach him, making stop and transforming back into human.
Finally able to access the files he needed, Fitz tracked down the activities of the firm Isodyne Energy, which led him to a Roxxon Corporation facility where Bauer could produce enough energy to power her experiment. After informing Alphonso Mackenzie of his findings, they flew to the facility. Meantime, Fitz was also worried because no one could tell him where his girlfriend Jemma Simmons.
Trapped Between Realms
Fitz would join Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Alphonso Mackenzie and Robbie Reyes infiltrated the Roxxon Power Plant. However, Fitz and Mackenzie could not cut off the power from the operating room. Mackenzie went back to the Zephyr One to get an E.M.P. device while Fitz remained in the facility. Unfortunately for S.H.I.E.L.D., it turned out that Eli Morrow, who they were trying to save, was the one who was trying to replicate the experiment in order to gain an absolute power. Morrow succeeded, and the reactor he used caused a violent outburst that drove Fitz, Coulson and Reyes in an inter-dimensional space between the Earthly Plane and Hell.
In the wake of the blast, Fitz would be able to find Coulson, where they discussed what happen with Morrow. The two agents then saw May and Mackenzie arriving, they soon turned out that May and Mackenzie could not see or hear neither Coulson nor Fitz, much to their dismay. Following their colleagues, Fitz and Coulson found Reyes lamenting over the deaths of several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents killed by Morrow. The three of them returned on the Zephyr One, where they heard their colleagues' conversation about their fate, Fitz hypothesized that they were experiencing the same thing than Lucy Bauer, but to a greater extent.
Fitz with Reyes would listen to Jeffrey Mace as he went to contact Jemma Simmons about Fitz's situation. When Fitz learnt that Simmons had been taken to an unknown place and that her phone had been confiscated, and that Mace had an arrangement with Ellen Nadeer who fiercely hostile to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Inhumans. Fitz worried about Simmons would threatened to hit Mace when he was able to get back to Earth's dimension, however, Reyes collapsed due to him experiencing freezing and he needs sunlight or he will die. Fitz would the Spirit of Vengeance leave Reyes and took possession of Mackenzie's body and left the plane.
Fitz and Coulson returned to the Playground, where May and Mace enlisted the help of Holden Radcliffe and Aida. They noticed that the darkness around them went closer to them, signaling that they were progressively drawn into Hell. Fitz revealed to Coulson that Aida was an android and that she could read the Darkhold in order to find a way to bring them back. Fitz and Coulson argued, since Coulson disapproved Aida's existence but Fitz explained that Aida had been built to prevent further losses like the sacrifice of Lincoln Campbell. Fitz blamed Coulson for resigning as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D, since the new Director had sent his girlfriend in an unknown place and Fitz heavily worried about her. However, Coulson promised him that they would come back and he would be reunited with Simmons.
Aida successfully read the Darkhold and built an Inter-Dimensional Gate using Laser-Coupling Gloves built by Radcliffe following the Darkhold's instructions. While she was doing so, Coulson began being dragged into Hell, but Fitz hold him back and finally managed to pull Coulson back from darkness and the two eventually escaped their inter-dimension space and returned on the Earthly Plane.
Fitz immediately rushed to find Mace confronting him about what happened to Simmons, who finally returned from her mission of investigating the Terrigenesis of Vijay Nadeer. Fitz considerably relieved to see that Simmons was safe, hugged her, finally having a tender moment with her after their argument about Aida's conception.
- "There's an order to things in this seemingly chaotic universe. There are laws, okay? And one of those laws says that every speck of matter that makes up every animal, vegetable, mineral... no matter how much it changes, it comes from somewhere, belongs somewhere. Its natural state... its home."
"It's kind of a lovely sentiment, even if it was completely unintentional."
"So what's the cause of the quake?"
- ―Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons, and Quake[src]
Fitz and Jemma Simmons assisted the rest of the team from the Zephyr One when an assault was launched against the Chinatown Crew Headquarters in order to stop Eli Morrow. They also monitored the numerous earthquakes that were happening across the globe.
When Ghost Rider infiltrated the building, Fitz discovered that Morrow had built a giant Quantum Battery. Morrow placed a Demon Core also know as a subcritical mass of plutonium, inside the Battery, making him able to cause a massive nuclear explosion. While talking with Quake, Fitz and Simmons found out that Morrow was at the epicenter of a new earthquake that Quake was feeling. Fitz then understood that Morrow was not creating matter out of nothing, but rather was harvesting energy from another dimension, which caused all the earthquakes.
Fitz, Simmons, Holden Radcliffe and Aida went under the Chinatown Crew Headquarters, building a new Inter-Dimensional Gate in order to end Morrow's plans while Quake absorbed the seismic waves. They were discovered by one of Morrow's mobsters, who shot Aida before being killed by Fitz and Simmons. Despite this interruption, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s plan succeeded and Morrow was sent to another dimension along with Ghost Rider and the Quantum Battery. Fitz and the rest of the team returned to the Playground, where they watched the news talking about the S.H.I.E.L.D. operation in Los Angeles.
Fitz was called in with the other agents into Jeffrey Mace's office where they discussed how they would dispose of the Darkhold, explaining it would be sent to an agent who would destroy it when Phil Coulson ordered Fitz and Holden Radcliffe to erase Aida's memory due to her reading the Darkhold, which they reluctantly agreed to as it seemed to be the only way to be safe from the book's effects.
With some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents accompanying them, Fitz and Radcliffe returned to the Radcliffe's apartment where they found Aida there looking out of the window. When Fitz is asked by Aida is everything ok, saying that he looked sad. He would ensure her, saying that he stressed with work. Fitz deactivated Aida, noting how she was becoming more observant and seemed to recognize guilt. To everyone's surprise, Aida then reactivated herself, she would knock out Radcliffe and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and throwing Fitz into the lab, allowing him to discover Nathan B. Nathanson's corpse in the lab. Returning to the Playground, Fitz and Radcliffe explained that the told Phil Coulson and Melinda May that the Darkhold was likely responsible for Aida's rebellion.
Aida would take control over all of her systems, which would cause Fitz and Radcliffe to go and fix the power out, which him and Jemma Simmons installed in the system in case the base was ever hacked again in the wake of the previous attacks. As the two was fixing the power for the base, they discussed if reading the Darkhold had allowed Aida to gain human emotions such as rage which was overwhelming her. Fitz would confront Radcliffe, during his rant, saying that Aida was built to save lives. Fitz and Radcliffe would start to debate if Aida is now a living person, which Fitz would disagree saying she still an android. Fitz is then told if they cut Aida's power, that would that make them murderers, which he struggled to argue against.
Eventually, Fitz and Radcliffe were able to restore power back to the base and found Aida walking out with the Darkhold. Maintaining his own cover, Fitz called out to Aida requested that she surrender now before revealing that they had now locked her inside, blocking her escape. As Aida insisted that she had not killed anyone there, she explained that the Darkhold had indeed given her the new emotions. Just as they were speaking, Mackenzie arrived with Yo-Yo Rodriguez and used his Shotgun-Axe to decapitate Aida. Fitz would knee by her lifeless body, apologizing to her, later Fitz would recover Aida's head.
The next day, Fitz would visit Radcliffe to confront about Aida. Which Fitz noted how they had just had a funeral for agent Nathan B. Nathanson. Fitz wasn't convinced with Radcliffe, refusing him to examine Aida's head. Fitz explained that tempers at the Playground were high and recommended that Radcliffe keep his distance for a few days at least, noting that it was, in fact, Director Jeffrey Mace who had now recommended this for the time being at least. But Fitz ensures him that he will still come round for football matches, leaving Radcliffe to have an conversation with the new Aida.
When Fitz returned to the Playground, he was updated by Jemma Simmons about where Jeffrey Mace, Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie are. They further discussed Aida's rebellion and which Fitz was told by Simmons to stop investigating on the matter, as she wants Aida's head to be destroyed. Fitz and Simmons were unable to locate the Quinjet but they soon learned a disturbing truth from Glenn Talbot: contrary to what had been announced, Jeffrey Mace is not an Inhuman. Instead, he was using a super strength serum inspired from Calvin Zabo's Formula. Fitz and Simmons strongly disagreed with this decision, stating that despite the precautions taken, the super-serum could be dangerous for Mace's health.
Since they could not locate the Quinjet used by Mace, Fitz and Simmons suggested to use Aida's severed head in order to intimidate Yuri Zaikin, the Watchdog who had tried to kill Mace, to find their missing colleagues. The idea proved to be successful. Despite Simmons's disagreement, Fitz resolved to study Aida's head to find what had caused her rebellion. He downloaded her data on his phone and told Simmons that the head was locked in a S.H.I.E.L.D. vault.
Holden Radcliffe's Betrayal
- "You know, one of the upsides of having a girlfriend is you get to talk about what's bothering you."
"Yeah, well, doesn't really sound like an upside for the girlfriend."
"I know you're upset about Aida. I'm in a strange position. I don't want to intrude on you while you're... processing. But I also want you to know you can talk to me. Always."
- ―Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz[src]
Fitz still figuring out why Aida betrayed the team, but he was met with Melinda May, which she wanted answers regarding Aida. Fitz was asked how much Aida was aware of her actions, which Fitz knowing that it wasn't a security report, thinking that May feels guilty about asking Aida to read the Darkhold. Fitz is met with his girlfriend, inviting Fitz to join her and May, Which Fitz declined. He was asked by Simmons that he can talk to her about Aida, but Fitz say that he works better when it quiet.
Fitz is confronted by Simmons, who had been working on Aida's head all along instead of locking it away for good. Fitz was accused by Simmons, that of being the source of Ellen Nadeer's intel since he could have turned on Aida's eye camera and thus leaked intel from within S.H.I.E.L.D. However, Fitz rejected Simmons' accusations and corrected her when she told him he was obsessed with Aida.
Instead, Fitz told her that he had been investigating on the cause of Aida's malfunction and that he had found the answer: Holden Radcliffe, Aida's creator. Following this revelation, Fitz joined a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents led by Phil Coulson to Radcliffe Residence in order to arrest Radcliffe. Although, unknown to everyone present, it wasn't the real Radcliffe, but a Life-Model Decoy of him, as he anticipated himself being caught by S.H.I.E.L.D..
Radcliffe was locked in a Containment Module at the Playground, where Fitz visited him. Fitz confronted Radcliffe about his betrayal and blaming him for having changed Aida's programming. When Radcliffe apologized to Fitz, he figured out that he is not talking to the real Holden Radcliffe, but rather to an Life-Model Decoy vision. Fitz would go to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, who was guarding the door, and asked for his gun. Fitz took the gun and shot Radcliffe, revealing that Radcliffe created an android of him, tricking all of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
Interrogating Holden Radcliffe's LMD
Fitz repaired the Life-Model Decoy of Holden Radcliffe in order to interrogated him, to find the real Holden Radcliffe and what his plans. Where he was joined by Jemma Simmons and Alphonso Mackenzie, to help Fitz find out where Radcliffe is.
Since Radcliffe's LMD proved to be uncooperative, Fitz decided to hack into his systems to find the answers. However, the android's programming was incredibly complex and Fitz was unable to access it. The longer the questioning lasted, the more troubled Fitz was, especially when Radcliffe's LMD mentioned Fitz's father. Indeed, the android assumed that Holden Radcliffe and Alistair Fitz were classmates and that Radcliffe knew how few consideration Alistair had for his son. Fitz, enraged when reminded of his abusive father, disconnected the android and left the labs.
Back in his bedroom, where he stared at an old picture of his mother and him, Fitz was joined by Simmons. Fitz lamented over the fact that he had been betrayed on multiple occasions, be it by his father, Grant Ward or Radcliffe. However, his girlfriend made him see the bright side by reminding him that these betrayals had not kept him from becoming a good and caring person. When Fitz noticed that this could be the reason why he kept being betrayed, Simmons replied that it was the reason she fell in love with him. Finally, when Simmons told Fitz that his personality was something more than pure programming, it clicked in Fitz's mind: if he could not crack Radcliffe's LMD's code, it was because the android was not running on pure programming as well. Instead, he was using a Quantum Brain built by Aida thanks to the knowledge of the Darkhold.
While Fitz and Simmons examined his Quantum Brain, Radcliffe's LMD inadvertently revealed that Holden Radcliffe and Aida had crafted more than one Quantum Brain: the Melinda May that had been with them in the last few days was also a Life-Model Decoy. Fitz and Simmons thus informed Daisy Johnson, who was on the field with Melinda May's LMD, who was closer than ever to retrieve the Darkhold. Finally, considering that they had obtained all the answers that they could get, Fitz, Simmons, Mackenzie, Johnson and Phil Coulson proceeded to the destruction of Aida's severed head and Radcliffe's LMD in a furnace.
Fighting Tucker Shockley
Following the Life-Model Decoys infiltrating the Playground, Fitz would work on a detection to detect Life-Model Decoys, if they enter the Playground. Fitz would arrive in the lab, to show Jeffrey Mace and Jemma Simmons his new suit, before Simmons telling him that he can't use the serum.
Fitz learned about the attack on Ellen Nadeer's office and the death of the Senator. He accompanied the team and headed to the Capitol in order to investigate the office's remnants. Fitz and Simmons took numerous samples but could not find any trace of explosives in the office. Together, they found out that a member of the Watchdog called Tucker Shockley visited Nadeer prior to the explosion, making him a suspect in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s eyes.
Fitz went back to the Zephyr One, where Shockley was brought following his capture by Johnson. After performing numerous analysis, he and Simmons figured out that the explosion had not been caused by a classical bomb but by an Inhuman who had underwent Terrigenesis: Shockley himself. Fitz, with the assistance of Mace and Simmons, managed to place Shockley in the Zephyr One's Containment Module and eject it out of the plane right before another deadly explosion, saving the lives of everyone on board.
Fitz and Simmons understood the mechanism of Shockley's explosions and requested Johnson's help since her powers could be used to defuse Shockley's explosions. Fitz designed a containment sphere in which S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to imprison Shockley and contain his explosions. However, they lost Director Mace, who managed to save the team, but was taken by the Watchdogs and their leader Anton Ivanov on the mission.
Krasnoyarsk Krai Battle
- "You've got to think about the implications of what you create."
"Electricity is used to execute criminals. Does that mean we also shouldn't use it to power our hospitals?"
"Not the same thing, and you know it."
"There's always risks involved in science. That doesn't mean that we don't pursue it anyway."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Leo Fitz[src]
Fitz introduced his version of the Framework to S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, describing it is a virtual area where they could train and practice with an extreme level of sensations and detail. Fitz and Simmons then explained to Phil Coulson, Quake and Alphonso Mackenzie that Aida and Holden Radcliffe had built another version of the Framework in which Melinda May was trapped. Mackenzie was very critical towards the Framework and voiced his critic to Fitz, reminding him that many of the ordeals S.H.I.E.L.D. had to overcome in the recent days was a more or less direct consequence of Fitz's designs. Fitz rejected these accusations, saying that he merely had conceived tools and that he could not be blamed if misguided people like Radcliffe were using it the wrong way.
Later, Fitz would have an argument with Mackenzie about the consequences of Fitz. Which Fitz saying, that it's for training agents, not an Oculus VR. Fitz quickly found that it was nearly impossible for S.H.I.E.L.D. to track down the location of Radcliffe's equipment. Nevertheless, Quake managed to find the location of Krasnoyarsk Krai, where Anton Ivanov's men were based. Fitz found comfort beside his girlfriend Jemma Simmons who reminded him that he never had bad intentions and that he had a chance to make amends for his mistakes by rescuing his friends.
Fitz, Simmons, Coulson, Mackenzie and Johnson infiltrated Krasnoyarsk Krai's naval base, where he and Simmons had to take over the communications room. Upon finding some old computer equipment, Fitz decided to copy the data and try to find some Framework hardware while Simmons went to find Aida who had been spotted in the base. However, Fitz was captured by Anton Ivanov's men. His memories were downloaded and uploaded in a Life-Modey Decoy while his real body was forcefully connected to the Framework by Aida, alongside with those of May, Coulson, Mace and Mackenzie.
Following his connection to the Framework, Fitz's memories were replaced by a whole new virtual life. In the Framework, Fitz became a ruthless high-ranking officer of HYDRA nicknamed The Doctor, making the pride of his father who had imprinted his cruel and cold nature in his son's mind. Fitz never knew Jemma Simmons in this world, less did he fall in love with her, and was instead Aida's lover, the android being known as Madame Hydra, leader of the organization which had taken control of the United States after S.H.I.E.L.D.'s demise, and whom Fitz remembered to have met during his time at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy.
When Daisy Johnson, who had infiltrated the Framework, how going the under the name Skye in order to rescue her friends, lost control of Vijay Nadeer, she encountered The Doctor. Once Nadeer was back in HYDRA's custody, The Doctor showed Skye the machine he designed in order to test the presence of Inhuman powers without inducing Terrigenesis, showing no consideration for the pain suffered by the subject, much to Skye's dismay. When Skye voiced her concerns about the fact that The Doctor's machine was completely immoral, The Doctor dismissed her critics.
Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Melinda May, who informed him of the reporting of Jemma Simmons as a subversive by Phil Coulson. Before the Doctor could give May a command, Skye asked about her, asking where she is, before The Doctor told her that it does concern her. When Skye left, The Doctor ordered May to send a team to arrest Simmons. However, the mission failed and The Doctor learned from May that a mole was likely working from within HYDRA. The Doctor, reminding May of what happened during the Cambridge Incident, ordered May to eliminate the traitor.
After meeting with May, The Doctor would go and meet with Madame Hydra in her office, which he informed her of a traitor within HYDRA's ranks, as well as the subversives that were Skye and Simmons. Fitz is told by Madame Hydra, that that she had increased security measures, but refused to reveal any information on the subversives themselves, despite the Doctor's insistence. To keep him quiet, the Doctor is kissed by Madame Hydra, who told him she needed his creativity to continue torturing Inhumans such as Vijay Nadeer who was being experimented on.
The Doctor visited Madame Hydra once again, asking her why she did not wanted him to take part in the chase of Jemma Simmons. Madame Hydra reluctantly showed him the picture of Simmons and The Doctor, after staring a long time at a picture of Simmons, decided to take the lead on the chase. Before leaving, The Doctor once again confessed his love for Madame Hydra, saying that he would cross the universe for her, possibly unconsciously referring to an event which occurred in the real world, and the two shared a passionate kiss. The Doctor would hold a briefing with the HYDRA agents, when Melinda May and Daisy Johnson entered. The Doctor explained that they are looking for Jemma Simmons, and if it comes to it they agents must use lethal force.
Feeling that Madame Hydra had been keeping information about Simmons, The Doctor infiltrated her office and found out that the alleged subversive was officially deceased. Madame Hydra then revealed to The Doctor that Simmons did not belong to their world and that she was here to destroy everything they had built inside the Framework. The Doctor learned that in this other world, S.H.I.E.L.D. had defeated HYDRA. Madame Hydra told her lover that she was a slave in this world and that she needed him to complete his Project Looking Glass so that she could defeat her enemies once and for all. When Madame Hydra left her office asking him to follow her, The Doctor stared once again at Simmons's picture, seemingly troubled.
The Doctor would go with Madame Hydra to Ogygia, an island of the Framework designed as a residence for Holden Radcliffe and Agnes Kitsworth, since HYDRA had received an alert indicating the presence of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Though The Doctor could not find Grant Ward, Phil Coulson or Jemma Simmons, who where on the island, he found Kitsworth and could not help but notice her resemblance to Madame Hydra. Panicking, Radcliffe explained to The Doctor that Kitsworth was not a threat to HYDRA.
While Radcliffe confronted Aida about what she had done with the Framework changing it to a world that HYDRA won the war, The Doctor would find Agnes Kitsworth and brought her before Madame Hydra and could not help but notice her exact resemblance with the head of HYDRA. Madame Hydra explained that Radcliffe came from "the other side" and that he had enslaved her, triggering The Doctor's anger towards him, and accused the fallen scientist of planning to replace Madame Hydra with copies.
The Doctor listened to Radcliffe trying to explain that neither Kitsworth nor himself represented a threat for HYDRA. Disbelieving him, The Doctor would take a weapon from one of his HYDRA agents and threatened to shoot Kitsworth with it, telling Radcliffe that he had to convince him if he wanted his girlfriend to live. Unbeknownst to them, they were watched by Grant Ward, Jemma Simmons and Phil Coulson. Ward had a shot at The Doctor but Simmons refused that he killed him since it would also mean the death of the real-life Leo Fitz.
Radcliffe further explained the situation to The Doctor, trying to have Fitz remembering details of their past friendship in the real world. When The Doctor mentioned Simmons, Radcliffe mentioned how deeply she and Fitz were in love in the real world. However, all these attempts were done to no avail when The Doctor claimed that his work in HYDRA was his true nature and, to make his point, he murdered Kitsworth in cold blood right before Radcliffe's eyes. This cold-blood murder horrified Simmons, who witnessed the whole scene and screamed, and The Doctor stared at her, puzzled, while his agents exchanged bullets with Coulson and Ward. The Doctor then left Ogygia.
Back at the Triskelion, The Doctor visited a cell with Daisy Johnson inside, who had been captured by HYDRA after having been tricked to admit her allegiance to S.H.I.E.L.D.. Ignoring her pleas about him being trapped in an alternate reality like Radcliffe had said before, The Doctor informed her that they knew she was an Inhuman and threaten her but saying they have ways to make her talk. He would call two guards to take Johnson out for questioning and torturing her, stating that Johnson did not know him.
- "The carrot or the stick? When neither motivates the truth, we face unspeakable choices."
"What happened to you, Fitz?"
"This is my home. I'm not gonna let you destroy it. We'll get to yours first. And when we do, the Patriot and all of his kind will pay for ever setting foot here."
- ―The Doctor and Daisy Johnson[src]
The Doctor further interrogated Daisy Johnson in her cell, asking her to reveal the whereabouts of the Patriot and of Jemma Simmons. He also told her that he was aware of the existence of another world from which Johnson had come and that HYDRA considered that Johnson and Simmons had entered the Framework to conquer it. Johnson replied that she did not know where Mace and Simmons were but that she would gladly give him the location of Simmons if she knew it since she considered her to be the only person to make Fitz realize that his life in the Framework was an immense lie. Enraged, The Doctor violently slapped Johnson, calling the Framework his home.
The Doctor reported the results of his unsuccessful interrogation to Madame Hydra, who decided to carry on the questioning while The Doctor had to deal with a security breach regarding the Project Looking Glass, due to S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Antoine Triplett having placed a camera in a HYDRA facility. The Doctor then walked and discussed with his father Alistair Fitz, expressing concerns about the necessity of killing Agnes Kitsworth. However, his father dismissed this feelings as being nothing more than womanly and unworthy of him, comparing him to Fitz's mom, which The Doctor apologized and agreed with him.
When S.H.I.E.L.D. assaulted an HYDRA Enlightenment Cultivation Center, The Doctor is informed by Melinda May, who injected her with a dose of super-serum in order to lead a team of HYDRA agents. He then joined Madame Hydra in her office and ordered the destruction of the quarantine building where the Patriot had gone. Together with Alistair Fitz, they later celebrated the death of the S.H.I.E.L.D. leader.
However, the HYDRA mission failed to capture the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The Doctor, enraged, yelled at his father for this failure, but was quickly chastised in return, with Alistair Fitz considering his reaction to be only worthy of his mother. The Doctor calmed down and admitted that he could not tolerate any weakness or failure, even from his father. He later went back to Madame Hydra's apartment and informed her that he had completed his Project Looking Glass, enabling her to get a new and stronger body. The Doctor also asked his lover to take him with her. Later, Alistair Fitz informed him that after interrogating Holden Radcliffe, he found out that the fallen scientist and Daisy Johnson had been communicating through the vent between their respective cells.
Leader of HYDRA
The Doctor went to Holden Radcliffe's cell in order to determine what the he and Daisy Johnson discussed when they were both imprisoned in adjacent cells at the Triskelion. At first, Radcliffe refused to speak, telling that he was already dead in the real world and that living in such a horrible version of the Framework, without Agnes Kitsworth, meant nothing to him. However, The Doctor persuaded Radcliffe to change his opinion by telling him that his Project Looking Glass could enable the transhumanist scientist to achieve immortality. The Doctor thus learned of the existence of the backdoor and gathered a team of HYDRA agents to stop Jemma Simmons and Quake.
However, while the Zephyr One was heading to the steel mill indicated by Radcliffe, The Doctor received a phone call from his father Alistair Fitz. Indeed, his father was threatened by Simmons who ordered him to bring Fitz, but instead he chose to ask his son to come and arrest Simmons. The Doctor heard his father being accidentally killed by Simmons and rushed at his house, only to find his dead body. Enraged, The Doctor had Radcliffe staring at the body of Alistair and swore to get revenge on Simmons.
Despite Madame Hydra ordering him to get back to the Triskelion, The Doctor took the Zephyr One and the HYDRA team to the steel mill where the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were. Accompanied by Radcliffe, The Doctor was able ti find the steel mill, to find found Simmons and to get vengeances for the death of his father. The Doctor ordered Simmons to kneel, but she won't trying to force him to draw out the man she knew and loved, The Doctor felts nothing but anger for Simmons, he would shoot her in the leg, forcing her to kneel, and prepared to kill her.
However, The Doctor was suddenly disarmed by Radcliffe, hitting him before he could murder Simmons. The Doctor is dragged by Radcliffe to the backdoor, as Radcliffe apologized for everything having regret for all the wrong he had done and what had happened to Fitz. The fallen scientist then threw The Doctor through the backdoor, thus successfully bring him back into the real world.
Escaping the Framework
Fitz woke up in Anton Ivanov's naval base, where Phil Coulson and Melinda May were already awake. However, when remembering that his actions had led to the deaths of Agnes Kitsworth and Jeffrey Mace, Fitz was horrified and started panicking, despite Coulson trying to calm him down. While Fitz was still in distress, Aida arrived, using her newly created human body. She smiled at Fitz and seemingly tried to seduce him like she did in the Framework. Fitz, puzzled, was unable to react and could not move away, keeping May from shooting Aida. Suddenly, Aida teleported, displaying an ability similar to the Inhuman Gordon and took Fitz away with her.
Back to the Real World
Aida teleported Fitz and herself to a beach, where she experienced the pleasant sensations of the warm sand and the water on her feet. Fitz himself was not that well, torn between his real life and his memories of the Framework. He confronted Aida about manipulating him and causing pain. Aida said that she had only repaired his relationship with his father and confessed that she loved him. Afterwards, she teleported with him into an apartment. Though the apartment was made so that Fitz would find it familiar, Fitz was still highly troubled. Fitz asked Aida if she was able to feel empathy and made her realize that by carrying her plans, she had endangered the lives of the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents by enabling Anton Ivanov to kill them. Upon understanding that and by using her newly found compassion, Aida teleported back to the naval base and tried to stop Ivanov's multiple mechanical bodies who had taken over the base.
Aida successfully returned to the base with Fitz and saved Alphonso Mackenzie, who was still trapped in the Framework. They teleported on the Zephyr One, where Piper and Jemma Simmons used I.C.E.R.s on them and locked them into the plane's Containment Module. The whole team, finally reunited, headed to the destroyed Playground, where Fitz and Aida were placed in one of the remaining Containment Chamber, blocking Aida's teleporting abilities.
Fitz finally woke up and discussed with Aida. He lamented over the fact that his friends would not forgive his past actions in the Framework. Still traumatized by his behavior as The Doctor, Fitz thought that he had an evil nature implanted by a father figure, just like his former colleague and friend Grant Ward, and feared that this would drive Simmons away from him, destroying all the future he had planned for their couple. Aida tried to comfort him but mistakenly thought that after what they had experienced in the Framework, Fitz was still in love with her in the real world. When she realized that Fitz was still deeply in love with Simmons and only her, which causes Aida to go completely insane.
Aida tried to forcefully take Fitz out of the Playground to live with him, whether he wanted it or not. However, due to the Quantum Field Disruptors of the chamber, Aida could not escape. Fitz was pulled out of the chamber by James Davis, Piper and Prince. Fitz warned them that Aida would easily leave the Containment Chamber: indeed, she had built a body with numerous Inhuman abilities, including Lincoln Campbell's lightning manipulation. They were later caught by soldiers sent by Glenn Talbot and immediately after, Aida attacked them. Prince was killed but Piper managed to bring Fitz to the Zephyr One, where he ordered May to take off the plane, as they were no more than easy targets for Aida. Talbot agreed to let the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents leave and they finally escaped the ruins of the Playground. Fitz would remain in the plane's Containment Module, grieving about what has happened. He was joined by Simmons who, after hesitating, sat beside him and hugged him in comfort. Both of them burst into tears, traumatized but finally reunited.
Regrets and Guilt
Since S.H.I.E.L.D. was heavily vulnerable to Aida's assaults, Fitz and Jemma Simmons tried to figure out a way to stop her. Fitz told Simmons about the Inhumans he had been studying in the Framework, assessing their powers through painful and even lethal procedures, which included Lincoln Campbell, Vijay Nadeer and Gordon.
Fitz lamented over the fact that he was unable to find an efficient solution to stop Aida and that his ideas had only brought pain and death so far. Simmons replied that this was the kind of idea they needed because Aida had to be killed, though Fitz did not seem enchanted by this perspective. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents soon had to deal with another part of Aida's plans. Indeed, Aida was shutting down the Framework, deleting all the elements in it and thus threatening the lives of Alphonso Mackenzie and Elena Rodriguez who were still trapped in it. Fitz and Daisy Johnson managed to find a way to postpone their deletion, but it would only last a few hours.
When S.H.I.E.L.D. finally retrieved the Darkhold from Aida with assistance of Ghost Rider, Phil Coulson devised a plan to lure Aida and stop her. In order to complete this plan, he asked Fitz and Simmons to put aside their emotional troubles about what had happened in the Framework in order to work together. Fitz and Simmons silently nodded, ready to work together. Fitz returned at the Playground with the others and he and Simmons were quickly confronted by Aida, who seized Simmons and threatened to kill her.
Fitz, distressed, agreed to help Aida retrieve the Darkhold and come with her, but Aida stabbed Simmons nonetheless much to Fitz's horror. However, unbeknownst to Aida, Simmons had been replaced by a Life-Model Decoy in order to lure Aida into a trap, and Fitz, though visibly shaken, had only fooled Aida by making her believe he would obey her. Fitz then rushed at the real Simmons and the two of them watched as Coulson, temporarily using the powers of the Spirit of Vengeance, destroyed Aida's body while she was staring at Fitz in despair.
With Aida gone, Fitz attended Robbie Reyes' return to Hell. After that, the agents were warned by Mackenzie and Rodriguez, who had escaped the Framework, that soldiers were coming for them. Fitz offered to stay behind and turn over himself in order to make amends for his mistakes, but Simmons and the others made him understand that they had forgiven him and that they had to stay together. However, his friends refused, with Daisy explaining that she had tried to do something similar after Lincoln Campbell's sacrifice, only for her to lose herself and realize she needed her friends.
Uncovering the Future
Arrest and Escape
Under Coulson's suggestion, they all then decided to go to Rae's Restaurant and enjoy a meal together before potentially being arrested. As they sat in the diner, Fitz was not eating still feeling guilty. Suddenly the lights shut off and a mysterious man leading an armed squad entered to take them. The man used a Stasis Device to stun them and bring everyone but Fitz through the White Monolith, which liquified and transported them to the year 2091.
Fitz had little time to cope with the fact that his friends had gone missing as the United States Air Force troops, led by Evans and Lucas, came to arrest him and took him to the Blue Raven Ridge facility. There, Fitz was interrogated because he was suspected of having helped the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to escape. Fitz denied all the accusations but acknowledged that he was responsible for the death of Jeffrey Mace. He then offered to fully cooperate in order to locate the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, being provided books to elaborate on multiple theories. However, over the course of six months, none of them proved to be relevant and General Hale grew weary of Fitz's failed attempts.
While looking for his friends, Fitz had also tried to reach Lance Hunter through fan letters sent to a football magazine. Hunter eventually got Fitz's message and came to him at the facility. After an emotional reunion, Hunter helped Fitz escape the military and both started looking for their missing friends. Fitz accessed the security camera footage and identified the vehicle used by Enoch and his squad when they arrested the team. After tracking down the vehicle, Fitz and Hunter discovered where Enoch was living.
Frozen in Space
Enoch immediately showed them a video of Fitz's friends being sucked into a strange Monolith-like rock, and explained he sent them to the year 2091 to fulfill a prophecy, while also explaining who he was. After Enoch showed hesitance toward showing them the source of the prophecy, Fitz now getting annoyed, suddenly took Hunter's gun and forcefully threatened him, much to Hunter's surprise.
Later that day, Fitz and Hunter was taken by Enoch to a park, to meet Robin Hinton, an Inhuman who gained the ability to see through all of time. However, they quickly found that they were traced and followed by the officials who arrested Fitz, to which Enoch froze them in place. The five fled to the Lighthouse, a bunker built for an apocalyptic event, to hide for the time being.
Fitz and Hunter would find some down time, where they discussed Fitz's relationship with Jemma Simmons and Fitz's newfound dark personality from the Framework. Eventually, Robin would start to open up to Fitz, who required to save his friends in the future where they were sent, and Enoch finally agreed to help him get there, revealing a capsule that could take him there. However, he also revealed it's at Blue Raven Ridge, the facility where Fitz was held for 6 months.
Fitz and Hunter would work together to break back into the facility, using false identities and ferrets as a distraction. They arrived at the facility saying that they were there to repair the damages from their the explosion, which Hunter had caused. Then released the ferrets to create a distraction, allowing them to break in. The two made their way into the storage room, where they searched for Enoch's capsule.
They soon enough found the capsule, while also discovering the Zephyr One, which was also put into storage. After fighting their way through some guards, they escaped with both the capsule and the Zephyr. Back at the Lighthouse, they hid a box full of useful items to be waiting for Fitz once he gets to 2091. Fitz revealed the capsule is a cryo freeze chamber, and that he intends to freeze himself and wait 74 years to catch up with his friends. The capsule turned out to be a cryofreeze chamber that Fitz used to be put into stasis for seventy-four years after an emotional goodbye with Hunter.
Adventures in Space
- "Apologies, Agent Fitz. We find ourselves in a bit of a conundrum. I was prepared to guard this vessel for the next seventy-three years, two hundred and sixty-one days. But I now must calculate your best chances of survival. An extremely... difficult computation. Considering the circumstance."
- ―Enoch to Leo Fitz[src]
Some months into their mission, the vessel that Fitz was being protected in by Enoch was under attack. Fitz was still in stasis as Enoch apologized for the disruption in their plan, saying that he had to calculate the chances of survival, which appeared to be very low. The vessel then was cut in half.
Although Fitz and Enoch escaped the ship's destruction, the Cryo-Freeze Chamber was destroyed, forcing the duo to head to Naro-Atzia where the chamber was made. A year later, Fitz and Enoch boarded the Lazy Comet, with Fitz posing as Sivian workers for the ship's leader, Viro, while Enoch hid away. Because Sivians were very xenophobic, Fitz acquired an Iriscope to change the appearance of his irises to match the Sivian. Enoch also taught him Sivian language, to help Fitz cover his true identity cleanly.
On their way to Naro-Atzia, Fitz was cleaning out the pipes of the Lazy Comet with the ship's engineers before he accidentally exposed himself after voicing Xandarian Snails to be disgusting―when they are revealed to be a delicacy to the galaxy for providing joy, and when he tried to counter the question of where he was from by saying he was from the North, unbeknownst to Fitz, however, was an irradiated wasteland. The Sivian Foreman and the other engineers later cornered and exposed Fitz when they discovered his use of the Iriscope to change his eyes to look Sivian. The foreman then exposed Enoch, who was hiding behind the walls of the ship, much to Fitz's dismay. Viro, the Comet's owner, came to the bridge, seeing Fitz and Enoch as stowaway and orders their execution via airlock jettison into space.
As he and Enoch were taken to the airlock, Fitz boldly said that the Comet wouldn't survive the next re-entry it makes, causing Viro to halt their execution temporarily. Fitz then reveals that the heat shields of the ship are misaligned and further bribed Viro by saying he is more productive than the ship's crew because of how he handled and fixed multiple faults on the ship. Despite this, Viro reminded Fitz that he lied by saying it wasn't his first haul when really, he revealed to Fitz that he was running. Viro ordered his men to continue with the execution before Fitz says he and Enoch will work for free. Accepting this, Viro ordered the duo to fix the heat shields and the airlock to earn their keep.
While repairing the ship as promised, Fitz brings up Enoch saying the ship was safe, but Enoch counters with it being more dangerous when Fitz revealed his identity and that Sivians are notoriously xenophobic, making Fitz frustrated that he didn't mention that before. Seeing how Fitz is not optimistic about their chances of survival, Enoch encouraged him by saying that they will soon return to cryofreeze and prepared to travel to the future safely, when all Fitz wants to do is to reunite with Jemma Simmons. Unbeknownst to them that the Earth had already been saved.
After completing the last of the repairs to the ship, Fitz and Enoch were taken to Viro on the bridge where he slurping down his drink. Fitz updates him, saying that the airlock is fixed and the shields are realigned. Viro, who initially pondered about what made them run to him but is satisfied with the work he and Enoch did. Despite this, Viro says the crew is lacking in the engineering expertise Fitz and Enoch have and plans to have them executed with the newly fixed airlock to jettison them from. Not wanting blood on his hands for a bribe, Fitz tried to convince Viro into letting them by training them to be more efficient like him, but Viro tells them to be thankful for letting them live.
As the engineering crew were being forcefully escorted to the Coment's airlock for execution, Fitz and Enoch watched from behind the pipes. Fitz says that the engineers were in that situation becomes of them, and it's up to them to save them. When Enoch says that there are very few chances where they succeed, Fitz counters by saying they can't just sit and watch them die, if he did, he would be unable to look Simmons in the eyes again if he let it happen, so the two came up with a plan that would save them and stop Viro.
As Viro was personally overseeing the engineers' execution, Fitz stood in his way wielding a wrench, causing Viro to confront him by saying he's not a fighter. Fitz agrees but adds that he could make him a lot more money if he let the engineers go. But Viro doesn't take the bait and allows his men to continue forcing the crew into the airlock. Knowing what was about to happen, Fitz gambled more by saying that Viro may not need them, but he needs Fitz himself. He then backs into the airlock. Viro questions him, asking if he thought of himself as a hero, but Fitz tells him that it was really about a woman, Jemma Simmons, and about looking her in the eyes again. When Viro shut the airlock door, the other airlock on Viro's side opened and Fitz watched as Viro and his men get sucked out into the cold vacuum of space. Enoch, who survived from being pulled into the vacuum, hit the switch and shut the airlock while opening up Fitz's, letting him and the engineering crew free and alive. After being thanked by the engineers, Enoch congratulated Fitz on his master plan, when he says it wasn't hard to predict, as he knows how hateful men thought.
After succeeding in rescuing the engineers, Fitz looked out of the Comet's window and saw Naro-Atzia. When Enoch joined him, Fitz asked him if it is safe on the planet. Enoch admitted that it would be difficult to cover up Viro's death, with the engineers facing the death penalty for it. Although Enoch recommends an escape plan, he declines, saying that they went through the trouble of killing Viro to keep the engineers alive. Fitz asks Enoch where to take them to keep them safe, to which he recommends Kitson, a planet within their fuel distance. When Enoch brings up him going back into cryofreeze and joining his friends in the future, Fitz says he has time and set off for Kitson.
Making a Fortune on Kitson
After the pair dropped the Sivian engineers off in Kitson City, the two started to unload the Xandarian Snails to Boyle and Toad to pay for a Cryo-Freeze Chamber. When Boyle questioned where they were heading after this, Enoch bluntly told them their plan, much to Fit's annoyance. The scavengers didn't seem to care about it though, and got back to work unloading the snails. Fitz then listened as Toad talked about what a job they did saving the crew from Viro, even calling them heroes.
Fitz caught the eye of puffies, but was stopped before he could eat them, with Enoch explaining that they were not meant for humans. Fitz is assured that they would find food once they were paid, but were in shock when Boyle pointed a gun at them, demanding the snails and ship. Toad then showed them that the two were most wanted from his datapad. Taking pity on them, Boyle gave them a casino chip they can use at the House of Games and urged them to leave.
The two entered the House of Games, where they were greeted by an employee who informed to leave their weapons and robotic companions behind or they would be executed. Fitz tried to urge Enoch to remain, but Enoch already walked through the scanner undetected. He followed after him and questioned how he got through. When Enoch explained that his Chronicom biology allowed him to fool any scanner, Fitz simply nodded and claimed to be happy that Enoch made it while patting his shoulder.
As the two walked down the stairs, Enoch talked about their year-long journey together has been "fun," much to Fitz's confusion. The two would continue down the stairs, Enoch then call Fitz his "best friend." He asked if Fitz felt the same, but he didn't provide an exact answer. Instead, he compared them to Xandarian snails, and how they're moving but not going anywhere. He then pulled out the casino chip and told Enoch that they needed more than the one chip they had before entering the main casino, with Enoch close behind.
When Fitz saw what kind of games and people were present, he became uncertain of their odds of succeeding in winning a fortune. Fitz is informed by Enoch that he was well-versed in over 10,000 intergalactic games of chance, some of which were being played in the casino they were in. Fitz asked which games he was good at, but Enoch revealed he was only an observer, not a participant. This gave Fitz little hope in seeing Jemma Simmons again and walked off.
After meeting up with Enoch, the two tried to figure out which game to bet on. When Enoch suggest a drink, Fitz questioned why he did that. Enoch assured him that they delicious, but Fitz specified that it wasn't the taste, but the price; they only had one chip. Enoch realized their predicament, he grabbed the chip from Fitz and placed it on a gaming board. Before Fitz could stop him, the board lit up at that moment and they won a handful of chips because of it. Fitz pulled Enoch to the side and asked how he did that. Enoch began to explain how he deduced the odds, but Fitz cut him off, realizing he was an advanced computer. Enoch felt like that was an insult, but Fitz assured him it wasn't and convinced him to use his advanced thinking to their advantage by calling him his best friend.
Fitz and Enoch were soon given their drinks and Fitz denied it while Enoch enjoyed his. Fitz deduced that the table behind them was where the most money was being won. Enoch was eager to join their ranks, but Fitz told him it depended on his poker face. Fitz accompanied Enoch to the board, where he greeted the brigands, much to Fitz's confusion. Fitz watched, as Enoch made great progress in winning a fortune.
Fitz tried to stop Enoch from betting, believing it was a trap. But Enoch disagreed and informed him that he thinks he found a "like-minded friend" to join their adventure. Fitz, however, didn't believe Wayne was a friend, much to Enoch's disappointment. In the end, Wayne won much to Fitz's annoyance. Enoch then questioned if Wayne lied to him, to which he openly acknowledged. This left Enoch in a daze as to him being manipulated.
The two sat at the bar in despair with Fitz dumbfounded that Enoch lost all their money. Enoch defended himself, saying Wayne intentionally deceived him. Fitz called it bluffing and compared it to what Enoch does. Enoch, however, saw no comparison, but Fitz reminded him that he was a robot passing as human, which was bluffing. Fitz is asked by Enoch that was he bluffing when he referred to him as his best friend. Fitz believed it didn't matter anymore and didn't answer. Enoch recommended they go to the brothels of Kitson to earn some money, however, Fitz, refused to take part in the brothels.
Enoch suggested a game that didn't require bluffing, but based entirely on mathematical odds. Fitz asked him why he didn't suggest this before and Enoch told him it was because it was very high stakes. Fitz is brought to where the game would be played where he was examined by Montalban. Fitz is told by Enoch that he is worth a high price, which led Fitz to realize he was the collateral. Fitz is informed that if Enoch losses, he would be sold into slavery. Now terrified, Fitz tried to get Enoch to take his place, but Enoch informed him that he has to count the tiles. Fitz is told that Enoch would give him a signal him using a high-pitched tone that only human ears could hear. Fitz took a seat and Enoch told him not to get a fourteen without further explanation.
Captured by Chronicoms
As the game progressed, Fitz was aided by Enoch's high-pitch tone. Though it looked as though they were winning, Enoch automatically shutdown. He was discovered by Montalban, who ordered everyone but Fitz to leave. Montalban locked them in and Fitz was finally able to turn Enoch back on. Enoch felt uncomfortable and urged Fitz to cease. Fitz told him that he set off a "air-raid alarm." Enoch, however, realized that he was remotely shut down and told him that it was a Chronicom Hunter that caused the shutdown and that they were on their way.
Fitz tried to find a way to escape before they could skin them, but Enoch didn't care if they had his skin, referring to it as his uniform of shame. Fitz tried to convince Enoch that he wasn't useless and to help him. When Fitz questioned what the horrible smell was, Enoch claimed it as the foul stench of the name Enoch. Fitz was instead referring to the dead gamer and Enoch informed him he was a Crepetolian whose blood was made up of 75% sulfur. He proceeded to bang his head on the table.
While Enoch was moping, Fitz started to spread the Crepetolian's blood across the door and asked Enoch to "spark up". Enoch questioned why he would do that when there was no purpose, saying the both of them would soon be dust and rust. To make Enoch feel better, Fitz called him his best friend and that was his purpose. Enoch believed he was bluffing, which Fitz assured him he wasn't; that during the time he's known him, he's grown on him. This gave Enoch the purpose he needed and told Fitz he would do anything for his best friend.
Fitz watched as Enoch sparked his fingers to ignite the sulfur, to knock down the door. The spark blew the door open. Fitz made his way out of the room to find Jemma Simmons. Fitz became surprised to see her, thinking that she was in the future. But before they could properly reunite, the Chronicom Hunter Malachi appeared and grabbed Fitz, quickly teleporting the two of them away.
Fitz was teleported onto Confederate Destroyer Ship, where he was taken hostage by Malachi. Atarah revealed Fitz being held at gunpoint by Malachi to convince S.H.I.E.L.D. to help them travel through time. When Simmons went to hug him, she went through him, revealing that it was a hologram. Fitz was then hit by Malachi, causing Quake to threaten to destroy the ship, which Atarah revealed that he was not on the ship, being aware of her power. When Enoch tried to stop Atarah from hurting Fitz, she would grow tired of their refusal, and ordered Fitz to be executed by Malachi on her command. Before Malachi could kill Fitz, Simmons revealed that they used a machine that controlled the Monolith that allowed them to travel through time.
Fitz was visited by Enoch, who gave him a brief on the situation. Fitz was informed of Simmons' capture, when he asked to fill in the blanks. Enoch reluctantly told Fitz that he offered Simmons up so that the two of them could be spared. Fitz, however, was furious at Enoch for what he did and ordered him to leave his cell. Enoch pulled out a small device and told Fitz he would always be his friend before releasing gas into the cell, causing Fitz to fall unconscious.
Long Awaited Reunion
Fitz was put in a state of unconsciousness, as he and Jemma Simmons was taken to the Cerebral Fusion Machine that allowed them to be put in a mental confine where they would share the same mind. When the machine was activated, Fitz awoke, a looked over and see's Simmons and the two hugged, finally reuniting with one another after a year of being separated. They talked about what they had been doing to get to one another, Fitz is told that they truly was sent forward in time. Suddenly, Atarah appeared and Fitz is informed by Simons that the Chronicoms had been hunting them for the last year. Fitz is also told that who Atarah is and about the destruction of their home planet Chronyca-2.
When she revealed her intention to reverse the destruction, Fitz realized she was referring to time travel, which he voiced was against the laws of physics, which Atarah told Fitz that Simmons claimed it to be possible, having done it before. She then told them to begin working on finding a way to achieve time travel, informing them that they had access to any tool imaginable and that their minds and memories were shared within the machine. This would cause concern for Simmons for their memories being shared, but Atarah would inform them that it was necessary in order to achieve their goal. Atarah then warned them that there is no escape and that they should only be concerned on working on how to help them, and once that would be completed, they would be free.
Atarah then suddenly exited, leaving the two to be alone, which then Fitz is giving the chance to speak with Simmons. He held her hands and began to reflect on their relationship, noting everything they had overcome, including surviving the bottom of the ocean and crossing over the galaxy to find one another, making him to then believe that they are stronger than any curse, and they could not be stopped. Fitz then proposed to Simmons, which she said yes to, and the two passionately kissed. They then hugged, and Simmons tells Fitz that she doesn't care if they ever escaped as long if they have each other. They then sat down, creating a spread of tea and sweets, and discussed their journey's to find each other and the planets they went to. Fitz then asked if she encountered any Kree, which is tell him that they did.
Dealing with Child Simmons
Fitz continued to take more about the future, trying to understand what had happened when they traveled through time. He then created a White Monolith and began to express some theories on how they could understand time travel. However, Simmons didn't want to go into too much detail about her experiences with the future, as she didn't want to let him know about his death. Fitz still interested in what happened in the future, would annoy Simmons that she would turn into a seven year old version of herself, which would shock Fitz. Fitz would follow the seven year old Simmons, under a bench and through a doorway that lead to her childhood bedroom.
Fitz confused on what's happening, asked the young Simmons if she knew who he was, which she did, which led him to ask why she came to her room, which was revealed that she would work out her problems by putting them in her music box, Fitz went to inspect the box, but was stopped by Simmons when she asked him to read to her. When Fitz tried to get her out of the room, Simmons yelled out to her parents, forcing him to comply with the request. When Fitz began reading the box, which was about Simmons' journey to find him, he discovered that it was the Darkhold, causing him to throw away the book.
Fitz then grabbed Simmons and brought her back to the space they were working in. When they entered, they saw Atarah standing in front of them, who Fitz questioned for putting them in a mind prison. Fitz interjected when Simmons tells Atarah that she does like her, Fitz, who was getting frustrated with Simmons, made her hand over the chemicals. The two began to argue until Fitz started to mention creating Aida to help him, which made Simmons return to her normal age, as Fitz planned.
Memories and Fears

As the two argued due to the built up frustration of being trapped in the machine, Fitz asked Simmons what she was so afraid of, which causes Simmons to conjurer a memory of Fitz's death with Alphonso Mackenzie appearing. The two then visited Simmons' memory, despite Simmons' warning not wanting Fitz to see it, as he discovered a body bag that had his own dead body inside it. Fitz is told that she was going to tell him that he did make it to the future and back, and broke the loop by sacrificing himself. Fitz then witnessed Daisy Johnson hand Simmons a ring, which made Fitz realize that he had proposed to Simmons already and they had gotten married. This all then caused Fitz to become overwhelmed, which Simmons tried to comfort him, but he then discovered that Phil Coulson had died too.

Like Jemma Simmons, Leo Fitz is known to be an attractive nerd on his profile for S.H.I.E.L.D., though he is somewhat socially awkward. Fitz also has a strange affinity for monkeys. He also has a great sense of humor, teasing Ward behind his back (in a mockery Southern accent), and planning to prank Skye. He is also a good actor, and easily impersonates an American tourist.
In spite of his lack of combat skills, Fitz impressed the more experienced Ward with his remarkable bravery and quick thinking during their mission together in South Ossetia. Fitz believes deeply in the friendships he creates: being upset when Skye appears to have been secretly working with Miles Lydon, actually crying when John Garrett revealed himself as HYDRA, as well as having a rare angry fit and emotional breakdown when Ward was revealed to be a murderer and a HYDRA mole. In return, Fitz is very loyal to his friends, is miserable when he was unable to save Skye from Quinn, and trusts Simmons with his life. Another instance of his loyalty was his refusal to serve Gonzales, deciding to leave rather than betray Coulson
While Fitz is devastated at Ward's betrayal, he is the only one on the team that still insists that Ward is redeemable, as Fitz believes that people are never "born evil." He is the only one who still tries to reason with Ward and implores him to let Garrett die and abandon HYDRA. Despite that, Fitz later on became very bitter against Ward after he dropped him and Simmons into the ocean to die and for betraying the team, even going on to torture him by suffocating him inside a cell as he did him, and later, attack him. However, Fitz is also very forgiving and understanding of others' problems, shown when he quickly forgives Skye for being so secretive about Miles Lydon, claiming that everyone "makes mistakes." He also instantly forgives Coulson for knocking him out with a punch, understanding the situation. As Simmons grows closer to Triplett, Fitz remains suspicious of him, though he does learn to trust him later on.
The brain damage Fitz suffered has caused him to become withdrawn after Simmons opted to be a part of an undercover mission. Fitz had hallucinations of Simmons and talked to her, claiming that those conversations calmed him. Billy Koenig had replaced him in many aspects, raising Fitz's jealousy. No one other than Skye and May interacted with him until Alphonso Mackenzie approached him, creating a new friendship between the two.
Since nearly losing Simmons to the Kree Monolith, Fitz has exhibited a tougher and more determined personality. His actions often put himself directly in harm's way, in order to protect those he loves. In order to find a way to get Simmons back, Fitz traveled to Morocco and negotiated with terrorists, risking his own life for a piece of parchment with the secret of the Monolith written on it. Once he returned to the Playground, he found out that the only word on the parchment is "Death". In his desperation, Fitz blasted the Monolith's container open with a shotgun and started beating on the rock furiously demanding that it swallow him.
Whilst inside the Framework, Fitz's personality was radically different to the point where he was the polar opposite from who he was in the real world. Ruthless, cruel, cold and sadistic and claiming to enjoy torturing people who HYDRA would capture. "The Doctor", as he was nicknamed, was willing to use his intelligence and scientific ability to further promote HYDRA's ideals, developing an agonizing experiment to find out an Inhuman's powers without triggering Terrigenesis. According to Fitz, victims of this experiment never survived, yet The Doctor had no qualms about carrying it out. This radical change was achieved when Aida removed Fitz's greatest regret, which was never having made amends with his father. In the Framework, Fitz's personality was deeply influenced by the education provided by his cold and ruthless father, who in turn was proud of his son's achievements within HYDRA. However, Fitz still had doubts about doing the things he was doing like the killing of Agnes Kitsworth, even if his father dismissed these doubts as ""womanly sentiment". After escaping the Framework, Fitz was horrified by his behavior inside the alternate reality since it had led to the deaths of Kitsworth and Jeffrey Mace, and was afraid that his profound nature could be evil. Fitz was so wracked with guilt that he was unable to look at Simmons once he was out of the Framework without breaking down into tears. He also offered to sacrifice himself for the team by taking full responsibility for what had happened since the creation of Aida and the Framework. Moreover, being responsible for Mace's and Kitsworth's deaths was such a trauma to Fitz that he was unwilling to kill Aida and thus causing him to have another death on his mind, even if Aida had become a crazed, lethal enemy to S.H.I.E.L.D. Instead, Fitz tried to stop her by attempting to reason her and to have her express her pain by means other than violence, but his attempts failed as Aida was keen on making him suffer.
Despite his expressed guilt and shame toward his actions in the Framework, minor traits of his alternate dark personality stayed with him, with an example being when Fitz forcefully threatened Enoch by holding him at direct gunpoint. Fitz initially rejected these remnants, stating that he could not accept it and was trying to bury it within him. However, after his friend Lance Hunter told him that all he had to do was do his best to control it.
Above all of this, Fitz is genuinely a good person who desire to help others, no matter who or what they are, as long as he don't hold some significant hatred toward them. Even after Grant Ward was, by all the facts, an HYDRA agent and traitor, Fitz refused to believe in that until he saw him, and even when Ward chased him and Simmons he continued believe in the relationship between them, and yelled to him, keep trying to make Ward to do the right thing. Even when it comes to his enemies, which threaten his and his friend life, he can be very compassion, as shown when he keep try and justify Ward, or make Aida back from her rampage, or tried to save his fellow workers at Viro's spaceship at the cost of his own life, despite the latter are those who revealed and uncovered his true identity as earthling at first place.

- Genius-Level Intellect: Fitz has become a very well known agent in the S.H.I.E.L.D. tech community for his technological expertise. Grant Ward's attempt to kill him damaged his temporal lobe, and he temporarily displayed aphasia as a result, a difficulty remembering or explaining words. However, this condition did not affect his intelligence, and Fitz continued being a genius. Over time, Fitz recovered from his brain troubles until he was released from the Framework and his intelligence was used by The Doctor, Fitz's evil self, to devise clever but harsh plans Fitz's true self was unwilling to come by.
- Master Engineer: Fitz has designed and created many of the equipment commonly used by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, including the Night-Night Guns and I.C.E.R.s, the Mouse Hole, the Magic Window. He has also created many of the tools used for analysis and scientific work, especially the D.W.A.R.F.s, the Golden Retrievers, the Full-Spectrum Goggles or the Magic Window. The sensitive nature of many mission has made him to develop devices against the clock that needed to be adapted to the parameters of each mission. As such, John Garrett was willing to recruit Fitz into HYDRA to benefit from his engineering abilities. Fitz's expertise also extends to artifacts of Asgardian origin, as his previous experience with the Berserker Staff allowed him to fully repair Lorelei's Asgardian Collar, greatly impressing Sif who considered him "quite clever". Fitz's intelligence was so great that he developed a quantum bridge to traverse the Quantum Realm without the need of Pym Particles in the war against the Chronicoms.
- Multilingualism: Fitz is able to speak some Arabic and to read Hebrew, aside from his native Scottish-dialect English. He spoke Arabic when he confronted gangsters in Morocco to get to Yusef Hadad. When Fitz opened the scroll casing he had taken from him, he was instantly able to identify the symbol on the scroll as the Hebrew word for "death". However, he did not know that the word also had the meaning "death by punishment". In deep space, Enoch taught Fitz to speak the Sivian language.
- Marksman: Fitz was taught how to handle a handgun, and he resorted to use them to repeatedly shot Hive while possessing Will Daniels' body on Maveth, or to kill Giyera using a Cloaked Gun. When he refused to accept Simmons' apparent death, he accurately shot off the locks of the case containing the Monolith with a shotgun. After the Framework, this and his reflexes are greatly increased, as shown when he and Hunter take back the Zephyr One. Before this, he was already accurate enough to shoot Holden Radcliffe's LMD in the head.
- Combatant: When Fitz first joined Coulson's Team, he was not a capable fighter. However, through his years of training with the team after joining, he became an adept combatant, being able to fight against a Primitive with great skill. He later fought against members of the Watchdogs using hand-to-hand combat.
- Spy: To be added
- I.C.E.R. Pistol: The I.C.E.R.s are upgraded versions of the Night-Night Gun technology developed by Fitz and Jemma Simmons. One of the times that Fitz used it was during the fight at Blue Raven Ridge where he and Lance Hunter found Zephyr One.
- SIG Sauer P226: The SIG Sauer P226 pistol is the standard sidearm carried by S.H.I.E.L.D. Tactical Agents. Fitz grabbed one of these weapons from one of the HYDRA operatives infiltrated into S.H.I.E.L.D. and used it to kill another before he could kill Melinda May during the Battle at the Hub.
- Smith & Wesson M&P: The Smith & Wesson M&P pistol is the standard sidearm carried by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Fitz was issued one when he was on the run from the S.H.I.E.L.D. faction led by Robert Gonzales, together with Phil Coulson and Lance Hunter.
- Smith & Wesson M&P Compact: Fitz grabbed the compact version of the Smith & Wesson M&P standard pistol inside Castillo San Cristóbal in Puerto Rico to threaten Alphonso Mackenzie, who had been possessed by the Kree City and attacked his teammates to protect the city.
- Glock 17: Fitz obtained this handgun from a backpack carried by one of the HYDRA operatives that took him to Maveth. He used it when he discovered that Will Daniels had died, and Hive had possessed his corpse. Despite Fitz shot him many times, the Inhuman managed to survive all the shots. He also borrowed the gun from an agent guarding the door of the room where Holden Radcliffe was being held once he realized that Radcliffe had actually replaced himself with an LMD. Fitz shot it in the forehead, revealing its true nature. Fitz took another of these handguns from Trevor Khan's corpse when he was killed by the Chronicom Hunters in order to defend himself as he had heard someone approach, though it was actually Agent Diaz and another group of surviving agents.
- FN Five-seveN USG: Fitz grabbed a gun from one of his men when they traveled to Ogygia to interrogate Holden Radcliffe, and only to prove Radcliffe wrong about him, he killed Agnes Kitsworth in cold blood. He grabbed another gun from a soldier to threaten Jemma Simmons due to she having killed his father Alistair, and was only prevented from doing so by Radcliffe himself.
- Heckler & Koch MP5K-PDW: Fitz attempted to use one of these submachine guns against Giyera when he managed to escape containment inside Zephyr One and began to took over the plane. However, before he could shoot at him, Giyera easily took the weapon out of Fitz's hands.
- Mossberg 500 Cruiser: Fitz took a Mossberg 500 Cruiser from the arsenal in the Playground to break into the sealed room where the Monolith was being kept, in a desperate attempt to understand what happened to Jemma Simmons when she was swallowed up by the artifact.
- Olin Flare Gun: Fitz shot a flare with this gun towards the portal to Maveth when it was activated inside the HYDRA Castle. Jemma Simmons saw the flare, and went towards the flare, managing to return to Earth but leaving Will Daniels behind.
- Orion Flare Gun: Fitz obtained this handgun from the backpack carried by one of the HYDRA operatives that took him to Maveth. He used it against Will Daniels' corpse, who had possessed by Hive, as shots with a Glock 17 pistol proved to be harmless. The flare made Daniels' corpse to burn, leading Fitz he had killed the creature.
- Night-Night Pistol: Leo Fitz designed the pistol version of the Night-Night Gun for his teammates, but he also began to carry two of them during his field missions with the rest of his team. Fitz used it to repeatedly shot at the already unconscious member of the Cybertek security team that attacked Jemma Simmons in a train in Italy, leaving the gun with an unconscious Simmons to protect herself once she woke up.
- Overkill Device: Fitz modified the Overkill Device he was sent to deactivate in South Ossetia, and used it as a handheld weapon to disarm the separatists that were about to attack him and Grant Ward.
- Destroyer Armor Prototype Gun: Under Phil Coulson's explicit orders, Fitz procured and fired the Prototype Gun against Vin-Tak, a Kree who was fighting Bobbi Morse when he tried to kidnap Skye due to her status as an Inhuman.
- Cloaked Gun: Fitz used this gun to kill Giyera.
- Chronicom Rifle: To be added
- D.W.A.R.F.s: Fitz often used the D.W.A.R.F.s in order to analyze and retrieve forensic data during his field missions, such as in the Centipede laboratory in Los Angeles, the temple where an 0-8-4 was located in Peru, the StatiCorp facility in Utah and even the Kree City under Puerto Rico. He also used them to try to stop criminals Vanchat and Marcus Daniels.
- Localized EMP Device: Fitz retrieved a Localized EMP Device from the Hub and carried it during his dangerous mission to South Ossetia, using it to force a blackout and gain a local mob's trust by fixing it.
- MAG Pouch: Fitz carried a MAG Pouch during his dangerous mission to South Ossetia, using it to adhere to the underside of a track and enter a separatist compound with Grant Ward.
- Magic Window: Fitz carried a Magic Window during his dangerous mission to South Ossetia, using it to see through the walls of the separatist compound.
- Spectrographic Analyzer: Fitz resorted to the use of an Spectographic Analyzer to determine the origin of each and every piece of debris found after the Battle of Greenwich.
- Golden Retrievers: Fitz has used his Golden Retrievers in order to track individuals over a relatively great distance, such as tracking Tobias Ford in Utah or Deathlok in Florida.
- Tracker: Fitz intended to use a Tracker on the package that Cybertek was delivering to Ian Quinn, but he ended up using it to inform the rest of his team about his and Skye's location in Ian Quinn's Villa.
- Mouse Hole: A device created by Fitz that was not mass-produced, but kept by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s highest agents, such as Nick Fury and Maria Hill. He kept one for himself, and used it to cut a hole through the Bus and infiltrate the Hub.
- Cigarette Laser: Fitz tried to demonstrate that the items of the Howling Commando Gear were more than they appeared, and started to pretend he was smoking the Cigarette Lasers. However, the only thing he managed to do was to set the drapes on fire.
- Quarter Walkie-Talkie: Fitz and Antoine Triplett shared a pair of Quarter Walkie-Talkies as they investigated John Garrett's headquarters in Cuba, leaving it in the Bus and allowing the rest of his team know that the plane had returned to the United States of America.
- EMP Joy Buzzer: Fitz used the device against John Garrett, damaging his cybernetic prosthesis and bringing him to the brink of death.
- Forensics Scanner: A forensics device used in the investigation of the man that battled Lady Sif in Portugal.
- Three Dimensional Scanner: Fitz used Three Dimensional Scanner to analyze the remains of a wall that Lash had disintegrated in order to escape from Lori and Shane Henson's apartment.
- Backscatter Glasses: Fitz used the Backscatter Glasses during the mission to find Holden Radcliffe.
- Iriscope: Fitz used this device to change his irides to resemble the appearance of Sivians while working onboard the Lazy Comet.
- Asset Communication Device: To be added
- Framework Headset: To be added
- Bus: To be added
- S.H.I.E.L.D. SUV: To be added
- Quinjet: To be added
- Zephyr One: To be added
- Zephyr One (Framework): To be added

- S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Science and Technology: Fitz spent several years training at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Science and Technology, where he was quickly noticed as one of the best students. This is also where Fitz met Jemma Simmons, who would become his best friend, and later his wife. Once his training at the Academy was completed, Fitz was asked by Simmons to accept to join Coulson's Team.
- Providence: During the HYDRA Uprising, Fitz, along with the rest of Coulson's Team, sought refuge at Nick Fury's secret base known as Providence, where he remained for several days until the team was forced to flee as the base was taken over by the United States Armed Forces.
- Playground: As a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Fitz was based at the new facility called the Playground to replace the lost Triskelion. Fitz spent a lot of time in the Playground, and especially in the labs, slowly recovering from his brain injury after nearly drowning in the ocean. Fitz was mostly present in the labs, where he designed new tools for S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to use and analyzed various artifacts. Fitz briefly left the Playground during the S.H.I.E.L.D. Civil War, refusing to serve under Robert Gonzales, but returned when the two S.H.I.E.L.D. factions were merged. He also shared a room with his girlfriend Jemma Simmons in the Playground, although the couple had started to look for a place outside the Playground to move in, a project which never came to fruition before the destruction of the base.
- Lighthouse: While looking for his missing friends, Fitz was taken to the Lighthouse by Enoch along with Lance Hunter.
- HYDRA Castle: Having been kidnapped by Giyera, Fitz was held prisoner at the HYDRA Castle along with Jemma Simmons by Grant Ward.
- Blue Raven Ridge: Fitz was detained for six months in Blue Raven Ridge by General Hale, who hunted down the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who had gone missing. During his time at Blue Raven Ridge, Fitz was frequently interrogated by Lieutenants Evans and Lucas, but to no avail. Hale threatened to lock him up forever, but Fitz was eventually able to escape from the facility thanks to Lance Hunter who posed as his attorney.
