"Target is a mobile satellite launch platform, the Lemurian Star."
Brock Rumlow[src]

The Lemurian Star is a S.H.I.E.L.D. mobile satellite launch platform. In 2014, it was intended to launch the satellites for Project Insight until the ship was hijacked by Georges Batroc under secret orders from Nick Fury.

History[]

Project Insight[]

The Lemurian Star, as one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mobile satellite launching platforms, was chosen to launch the targeting satellites for the three Project Insight Helicarriers. However, HYDRA had uploaded a copy of Arnim Zola's algorithm to the ship in order to use Project Insight to enact their new world order.[1] In 2014, HYDRA ordered Jasper Sitwell, who was assisting Phil Coulson and his team with hunting the Clairvoyant, to immediately switch assignments and relocate to the Lemurian Star.[2]

Hijacked by Batroc[]

"What's Sitwell doing on a launch ship? All right, I'm gonna sweep the deck and find Batroc. Nat, you kill the engines and wait for instructions. Rumlow, you sweep aft, find the hostages, get them to the life-pods, get them out. Let's move."

Nick Fury, the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., became suspicious of the algorithm that was to be used to deploy Project Insight. Since Project Insight was a S.H.I.E.L.D. operation approved by Secretary Alexander Pierce and the World Security Council, Fury secretly and anonymously hired Georges Batroc, a former member of the French DGSE Action Division and one of Interpol's most wanted terrorists, to hijack the ship and hold it for ransom.

Batroc, leading a group of twenty five pirates, successfully took control of the Lemurian Star and took its passengers hostage before contacting S.H.I.E.L.D. and demanding a billion and a half dollars in exchange for the hostages. As a response, S.H.I.E.L.D. sent a STRIKE team, including Captain America and Black Widow, to rescue the hostages, subdue the pirates and regain control of the ship. However, Fury informed Romanoff that her mission was to secretly obtain a copy of the algorithm from the ship's computer without S.H.I.E.L.D.'s knowledge.

Ninety three minutes later, Rogers, Romanoff and STRIKE were sent to the ship in order to retake command and free its hostages, when it was setting up its last payload in the Indian Ocean. Captain America gave instructions to the rest of the agents, as he would take point and defeat the hostiles in the deck before searching for Batroc; he ordered Black Widow to clear out the engines room and Brock Rumlow and his STRIKE team to liberate the hostages and take them to safety.

Rogers jumped from the Quinjet and managed to board the ship unnoticed, and started to silently defeat the pirates that were patrolling the deck, with Rumlow killing the last one as he descended in his parachute. Meanwhile, some of the pirates started to lose patience about the hijacking, with one of them even saying that they needed to start killing the hostages in order to make S.H.I.E.L.D. pay the ransom. Rogers located Batroc, overhearing him giving orders to Ferdinand Lopez in order to prepare the engines of the ship to depart as soon as the rescue arrived. The man in the engine room received the order, but he found Romanoff just behind him, disabling him and placing around his neck a rope to swing down below deck and shoot several of the pirates on her way down.

The pirates in charge of the hostages already lost confidence in the arrival of the money, and said that they would begin killing hostages if he did not receive news from Batroc, asking another pirate standing guard on the other side of the door. However, just as he answered, Rumlow stunned the pirate, with Jack Rollins placing a small explosive device while the rest of the STRIKE team covered the windows to protect the hostages.

Batroc was informed that S.H.I.E.L.D. was maintaining radio silence regarding the status of the Lemurian Star, and Rumlow informed Captain America that every STRIKE member was in position to release the hostages. Rogers asked Romanoff's status, and she requested radio silence as she quickly defeated the last pirates left in the engine room secure, informing Rogers when it was finally secured.

Just as the pirates were about to kill the first hostages, Rogers ordered STRIKE to act, killing most of the pirates, and Rumlow bursted into the room to kill the head pirate in charge of the hostages. Sitwell remarked something he already told to the pirates, that S.H.I.E.L.D. did not negotiate.

Lopez informed Batroc that he lost contact with the rest of his men, just as Captain America threw his shield. Batroc managed to evade the attack, and escaped from Rogers. Rumlow informed Rogers that they were leading the hostages to extraction, but Romanoff did not appear at the rendezvous point, and there were hostiles left in the ship.

As Rogers was giving Romanoff instructions to help protect the hostages, without obtaining a response, Batroc attacked Captain America, taking him by surprise and managing to defend himself from his retaliation. Following a taunt made by Batroc, Rogers managed to knock Batroc down by smashing him into one of the rooms, where they witnessed Romanoff downloading the data from the ship's mainframe.

Rogers was upset that Romanoff endangered the hostages by not following his orders, but she replied that the hostages were not her mission. Rogers complained that she jeopardized the whole operation, and Batroc seized the opportunity to throw a grenade at them and escape, with Romanoff admitting that it had been her fault.

The agents and hostages managed to leave the ship, but Batroc was able to escape without being captured.[1]
